Scotland’s
Cultural HeritageBy Rob Mason
If all of the world´s cultural heritage (sports,
music, fashion, architecture, literature,
painting, etc.) was contained in a time capsule, what would we
include to demonstrate
the legacy of Scotland?

Language
Scottish Gaelic is a Celtic
language descended from
Ireland and was once the
main language spoken across
the country.
Today, only a few speak the
language, however, in recent
years attempts have been
made to prevent further
decline - dual language traffic
signs and Gaelic television
and radio programming are
now common.
Sport
s
The modern game of Golf
was founded in Scotland
during the 15 th Century. It’s said that during 1457, the King of Scotland banished the
game for being a distraction to Archers
who were training to
fight the English.
Featuring a unique combination of heavy
athletics, dance, music, and
Scottish culture, the many
events comprising Scotland’s Highland Games
links the Scots to their
ancient customs and
heritage.
The Games are replicated
by Scottish immigrants
around the world each year.

The Bagpipes are a musical instrument that
are one of the most iconic symbols of Scottish culture.
Played individually, by
pipe bands, or by large
military pipe bands, the
“skirl” of the pipes is
unmistakable.
Musi
c
The combination of the
fiddle, accordion, guitar,
harp, and whistle are the
main instruments used
when playing the traditional music of Scotland.
The variety of tunes ranges
from soft and melodic to
lively and energetic.

A Ceilidh is a traditional
Scottish dance event
usually held on special
occasions or weddings.Scottish traditional music
is played at a lively pace
that encourages participants to come
together and dance to
traditional country dances.

Tartan is a patterned woven
fabric made from wool with a
variety of horizontal and
vertical color combinations.Each individual color
combination signifies
allegiance to a Scottish family
name and with thousands of
designs available, it is
customary to identify your
family’s tartan and wear
associated garments with
pride.

The Kilt is an iconic piece of
Scottish clothing, which dates
back hundreds of years.A single piece of tartan 3-4
yards in length forms the kilt,
which is worn around the
waist at knee height, along
with a jacket, waistcoat, shirt,
socks, shoes, and a sporran,
which is Gaelic for purse.
Arthur Conan Doyle, Robert
Burns, Robert Louis Stevenson,
and Walter Scott are just some
of Scotland's most famous
poets and authors. But perhaps it’s the poet
Robert Burns who is most
fondly remembered in
Scotland and his birthday is
celebrated across the country
every year on 25 January with
a “Burns Supper”.

A journey through the
architecture of Scotland is in
itself a journey through our
architectural evolution. From ancient burial sites dating
back thousands of years to
farmland crofts, magnificent
castles, Victorian stone
buildings and steel bridges,
Greek and gothic styles, and
contemporary buildings,
Scotland is as architecturally
diverse as any country on the
planet.

Made from barley and naturally
flowing spring water, Scotch
Whisky is one of the world’s
most famous drinks with its
production in Scotland dating
back to the 15 th Century. And possibly more infamous
than famous, Haggis is
Scotland's national dish. Some
say the Haggis is hunted on
Scottish moorland or hills and
others say it’s just a type of
sausage pudding that
combines meat, oatmeal and
spices.

As one can see, there
are many items worth
placing in a time capsule
to help demonstrate
Scotland’s contribution
to the cultural heritage
of the world.
