Seven Myths About Writing

Our formal schooling teaches us grammar and literature.

Myth: I can’t write because my grammar and vocabulary are not good enough.

Myth: Writing is a solitary pursuit.

Myth: Good writers write one draft.

Fact: Good writers are constantly revising.

Myth: Revising means correcting grammar mistakes

Fact: Revising means thinking about how it all fits together.

Fact: Correcting grammar is part of the copyediting process

Fact: Revising is what will make you a better writer.

Myth: Revising means I am a bad writer.

Fact: The tone of the writing should match the needs of the audience.
