Step # 1Identify

I D E N T I F Y★ Which line are you reading?★ What is the time signature?

○ How many beats are in each measure?○ Which note gets the beat?

★ What is the key signature?○ Sharps? Flats? What’s the key?○ Whatever key you’re in… that’s “Do”!

★ Are there any familiar or difficult rhythms or leaps?★ Any repeating pitches? ★ What are the highest and lowest pitches?★ What are the starting and ending pitches?

★ Read either line, they’re in unison!★ Time Signature: 4/4

○ 4 beats per measure, the quarter note gets the beat★ Key Signature: G Major

○ 1 sharp: F#: Father Charles GOES. Or F is ti, so G!○ G is Do

★ What is your starting pitch? Do★ What is your ending pitch? Do★ What is your lowest pitch? Do★ What is your highest pitch? Fa

Step # 2Rhythm

★ Using the tap snap method on your chest, say

the rhythm out loud using numbers.

★ If there is a difficult rhythm, isolate it using

“ta’s” and “ti-ti’s”.

★ Make sure to give rests their full value!

★ Use the tap snap method on your chest and tap out rhythm★ Make sure you’re giving full value to all notes!

Step # 3Solfege

S O L F E G E

★ Read through your line on solfege.

★ Don’t try to go fast, slow is better!

★ Be mindful of skips!

★ What is your starting pitch? Do★ What is your ending pitch? Do★ What is your lowest pitch? Do

★ What is your highest pitch? Fa★ Read it through on solfege!

○ Be sure to read the rhythm as well!★ Any problem areas? Isolate them and try again!

Step # 4Sing

S I N G

★ Apply all knowledge that you’ve gained about

your line of music!

★ DON’T STOP! Sing through your mistakes and

come back in!

★ Look ahead! Know what’s coming up.

★ Make it musical! Sight reading doesn’t need to

sound boring :)

★ Sing it musically!★ Don’t take a breath at every measure!

Step # 5Sing.. again!

R E P E A T

★ Reflect on your previous attempt, and isolate

problem areas.

★ Put the isolated areas back into context and

read it over again.

★ Make this a performance. Good phrasing and

tone!

★ Sing it one last time with the most musicality and phrasing you can imagine!

★ Make the “boring sight reading” beautiful.
