Single Celled Organisms
Adapted from www.micrographia.com by Ms. Shaw
• Clarifying objective: 7.L.1.1• Compare the structures and life functions of
single-celled organisms that carry out all the basic functions of life including: Euglena, Amoeba, Paramecium, and Volvox.
Things to think about:
-How do living things move?-How do living things eat?-Do all living things contain cells? Is a cell a living
thing?
What are Protozoa (of the Protist Kingdom)?
Protozoa (1st animals)
-classified by how they move.
Autotrophs make their own food.-Photosynthetic autotrophs make their own food
using energy from light.-Chemosynthetic autotrophs do the same thing
using energy obtained from the breakdown of chemicals. Heterotrophs require food as they cannot make their own.
-by ingestion eat by consuming food.- by absorption eat by secreting digestive
enzymes outside of their bodies, then absorbing the nutrients into their bodies.

Amoeba
Paramecium
Euglena1. How the organism obtains
food:Photosynthetic
Autotroph & Heterotrophic
2. How the organism moves:by flagella
3. Any unique characteristicspigment spot (or
stigma), positive phototaxis
Flagella - A long, threadlike appendage.
Euglena
Volvox1. How the organism obtains food:
Photosynthetic 2. How the organism moves:
colonial flagellate3. Any unique characteristics:
colony is made up of many zooids (individuals) organized in hollow ball. Some division of labor exists within colony.
Amoeba1. How the organism obtains food
Heterotrophic: uses pseudopods to feed by engulfing the prey and incorporating it into their cytoplasm.
2. How the organism movesby pseudopods (false feet) temporary extensions of the
cell - in any direction3. Any unique characteristics
Have no definite shape or form
Pseudopodia - A temporary projection of the cytoplasm of certain cells. The prey remains inside a vacuolar structure called a food vacuole within which food gets digested and absorbed

Paramecium• 1. How the organism obtains food:– Heterotrophic
• 2. How the organism moves:–Cilia
• 3. Any unique characteristics:–has a definite shape. Their spindle-shaped
body has anterior and posterior ends, although they dart backwards or forwards very swiftly
Cilia - Microscopic hair-like projections extending from surface of cell. They act in unison to move the cell.
Paramecium
Cilia are used for movement, feeding, or both. The cilia may occur in rows, longitudinal or spiral, or may occur in tufts.
