Protection in Social Media

• Two important kinds of protection:

• Identity

• Reputation

• Failure to protect your account may lead to negative consequences

• Not unlike losing control of your financial information…

What’s in Your Profile?

• All Social Media

• Passwords: Good practice to change it at least every 6 months

• Strong password:

• At least 8 characters

• At least one capital letter

• At least one small letter

• At least one number

• At least one special character !@#$5^&*()

• Challenge Questions:

• Do NOT use *real* answers!

• Make up answers to the questions and keep your answers where you have access to them.

• Real answers tell more information about you if hackers get into your account.

What’s in Your Profile?

• Facebook

• Security Settings

Create a security code to access your account from unknown browsers

Problems: Social Media and the Workplace

I just don’t think I can do this anymore. I mean, it’s like everyone at work

hates me and treats me like crap every day. Just because I am a little

different, they make fun of me and it makes me so depressed that I want to

just come home and end it all sometimes. Other times I’m so mad that I feel

like the next time it happens I want to just go postal and teach them all a

lesson about bullying. I mean, WTH, so I have a little handicap. Lots of

people do. That’s no reason to make fun of me. I do my work just like

everybody else does. This really sucks. Something has to change or it’s

going to be over.

You are a supervisor, and you are on John’s “Friends List.”You read this. See any problems for you?

Problems: Social Media and the Workplace

• You have, at a minimum, three important problems to address:

• A mental health issue (depression)

• A safety issue (going postal)

• An EO issue (bullying in the workplace hostile work environment)

• Potentially Handicapped accommodation issues

• This is especially true for single people…

• Photographs

• Never use provocative pictures

• Never use pictures showing your valuables

• Never use pictures showing your address or car & license plate

• Phone number

• Good for your business & friends, but remember marketers can get it on social media, too!

General Safety Tips

• What about Reputation?

• Photographs

• Drinking, smoking pot, etc. are not good for professional image

• Be wary of what you’re wearing…or not wearing, as it were…

• Comments

• Everyone has an opinion. Many people differ.

• Doing it respectfully is the key to success!

• Follow the example of Sir Winston Churchill…

• Work

• Remember…when you list your job, you now take on responsibility as representing the company, too…

Protecting Your Devices

• No need to spend hundreds of dollars…

• For your PC:

• For your mobile device:

Don’t buy these! Use the FREE editions!

In Summary…

• Social Media can be lots of fun

• Social Media can be productive

• Social Media can be dangerous

• Social media can be destructive

• Bottom line: Be careful and you will be fine…
