DESCRIPTION

Check-list worship might make us feel like we’ve done what we have to, but what God desires is that we be a living sacrifice, and that we be devoted to Him and His people. This lesson reminds us to change our attitude about worship so that we can grow. This lesson is from Brian Haines ( http://www.sunsetchurchofchrist.net ), with some changes made by me.

Spiritually Minded Worship

Romans 12.1-2,CB NT p. 281

Are you annoyed when someone chooses to be distractedinstead of being involved in the moment?

Imagine how our Father must feel.

Instead, should we not be fully engaged in our worship to Him?

✔ Have you ever been guilty of check-list worship?

And have you ever been distracted by the “outward” forms of what is happening during worship?

✔ DONE!

We lie to ourselves though, when we finish the check list and say “I’ve done church!”

And we leave worship happy, knowing we’ve done what we must until next Sunday.

Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them

(Matthew 6:1, CB NT p. 9)

A sonhonors his father, and a

servant his master. If then I am a father, where is my honor? And if I

am a master, where is my fear? says Jehovah of hosts to you, O priests,

who despise my name.

(Malachi 1:6, CB OT p. 1530)

The lie we tell ourselves is that our Father accepts just 1/7th of our lives.

How does God view

“doing” worship?

And Jehovah said: Because this people draw near with their mouth and honor me with their lips, while their hearts are far from me, and their fear of me is acommandment taught by men

(Isaiah 29:13, CB OT p. 1120)

Lip-service is unacceptable!

Guard your steps when you go to the house of God. To draw near to listen is better than to offer the sacrifice of fools, for they do not know that they are doing evil. (Ecclesiastes 5:1, CB OT p. 1052)

Only a fool worships insincerely.

Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty concerning the body and blood of the Lord.

(1 Corinthians 11:27, CB NT p. 303)

We bring judgment on ourselves when we worship without thinking.

instead...

I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to presentyour bodies as a livingsacrifice, holy and acceptableto God, which is your spiritualworship. (Romans 12:1, CB NT p. 281)

We must be living sacrifices.

I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to presentyour bodies as a livingsacrifice, holy and acceptableto God, which is your spiritualworship. (Romans 12:1, CB NT p. 281)

Not merely 1/7th of our lives.

And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship,to the breaking of breadand the prayers.

(Acts 2:42, CB NT p. 211)

What is the fruit ofcheck-list worship?

By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples.

(John 15:8, CB NT p. 193)

What is the fruit ofcheck-list worship?

Jesus draws a clear connection between the fruit of my life and discipleship.
