"They have taken the Lord from the tomb, and we don't know
where they put him." This must have felt like adding insult to
injury. Mary Magdalene had stood faithfully by Jesus up to
his last moment on the cross. She had seen him laid in the
tomb and she had already visited his body there to mourn and
pay her last respects. But today, on her arrival, she finds the
body missing. Wasn't it enough to torture and crucify her
innocent Lord? Why did they have to take away her one last
bit of consolation? Why did they steal his body?
Imagine the despair she must have wrestled with at this
moment. As if the events of Good Friday had not been
enough, now she faced another tragic moment. From Mary's
perspective, things could not have gotten any worse. Every
bit of evidence around her converged to make her feel
completely powerless and afraid. Her eyes could only see the
darkness of the empty tomb.
Here now, into this rock-bottom moment when no human
hope remained, here burst in the risen Christ. Just when there
was no possible solution, when everything was far beyond
repair, suddenly Jesus appeared, glorious, victorious, and
completely and utterly unexpected. His triumph over death
was more than that: it was also a triumph over human
hopelessness and despair. It was proof that God is bigger than
our biggest problems. He is more powerful than the most
threatening evils and all the fears that lurk around in our lives.
The joy of Easter is ours, today and every day. As Christians,
we can rejoice in belonging to a God who is ready and able to
break through the toughest barriers of sin and death, even
when we least expect it.

CATHOLIC 101
WHY DO CATHOLICS CELEBRATE
THE EASTER VIGIL?
by Rev. Lawrence Rice, CSP
You may notice that many Christians
observe Easter Sunday a little differently
than Catholics do. For lots of churches, the
peak celebration is Easter Sunday, maybe
even a service at sunrise. Most Catholics
will tell you that for us, Easter Sunday is
almost anti-climactic. That’s because for
us, the most significant celebration was the
night before, at the Easter Vigil.
We’ve been preparing for Easter through forty days of Lent,
culminating in the Easter Triduum: Holy Thursday, Good
Friday, and the Vigil of Easter on Saturday night. All that
waiting and preparation peaks when we gather on Saturday
night for a solemn vigil.
We wait in darkness, bless a fire, process with candles, and
hear re-told the stories of our salvation through the
scriptures. The emphasis is on waiting for the culmination of
the story: Christ’s resurrection from the dead. Bells are rung,
and alleluias are sung as we hear the gospel account of
Christ’s rising. Then, following this proclamation of the core
of our beliefs, new members are brought into the Church
through baptism and a profession of faith. The recounting of
Christ’s new life is closely connected to the Church’s renewal
through the reception of its new members.
This celebration as a vigil is important because it doesn’t just
commemorate something God did in the past; it celebrates
something God is doing today. Although our salvation was
accomplished 2000 years ago, we are also watching and
waiting to see what God is doing in our lives today. Because
our past and our future are connected, through God’s saving
power, it wouldn’t seem like enough for us to simply sit in our
pews on Sunday morning, as we do every week.
The celebration of Easter, as a vigil, invites us to break out our
most potent symbols of God’s action, and our response. So,
all the waiting, the readings, music, candles, procession, and
initiation, all remind us that God has accomplished something
amazing by loving us so much. And our vigil is a statement,
individually and collectively, that we are ready to be
renewed and to live out of the grace we’ve received.

Contraception: Cracking the Myths In this new revised edition of Professor Janet
Smith's groundbreaking expose on the effects of
the pill on modern society, she presents a God-
centered view of sexuality that can bring married
couples a joy that they could have never
imagined. Backed by statistics and armed with
decades of research, Prof. Smith shows the crippling effect of the
contraceptive culture on our relationship with God, our romantic
relationships and marriages, the culture at large and our physical
and mental health. Learn more about your Catholic faith

UPDATES OF ST. COLUMBA CHURCH
BUILDING PROJECT FROM THE PASTOR The proposed building construction of parish restrooms, rectory guestroom and parish office audio-visual room is still ongoing. We have received so far around $200,000 for our projects and once we break ground for the restroom construction, we will continue to raise the remaining $250,000 for the whole projects. The architect has finished the plans and we are submitting it to the Archdiocese for final approval and finding a building contractor. I also formed a committee for these projects and they are ♦ Hedy and Graham Thomas – chairpersons ♦ Mary Brennan – member ♦ Damien Downing – member ♦ Efren Sebastian - member I hope that when we receive the final approval, we will start the project by summer. I would like to thank all of you who supported and have donated to these projects. May God bless you for your generosity.
A LIFELINE FOR MARRIAGES IN TROUBLE
Please help families in your parish community by letting them know about a marriage-saving weekend. Retrouvaille (pronounced "retro-vi" with a long "i") has been a lifeline to help couples in trouble, and you can be a lifeline to them. Many couples across the nation who have attended Retrouvaille learned about this program from their weekly bulletin. Many are afraid to ask their pastor or friends for help with their marriage, and others are just hoping time will make things better. Seeing the program announced repeatedly in the bulletin can give them the courage to pick up the phone and make the call. The next Retrouvaille weekend is May 8-10. For more information on Retrouvaille in Washington, DC and Maryland can be found at www.retromd.org.

ADORATION AND HOLY HOURS
The importance of Eucharistic Adoration is shown in the
fact that the Church has a ritual that regulates it: the Rite
of Eucharistic Exposition and Benediction. This is an
extension of the adoration of the Blessed Sacrament which
occurs in every Mass: "Behold the Lamb of God, behold
him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are
those called to the supper of the Lamb." Exposition of the
Blessed Sacrament flows from the sacrifice of the Mass
and serves to deepen our hunger for Communion with
Christ and the rest of the Church. The Rite concludes with
the ordained minister blessing the faithful with the Blessed
Sacrament.
Holy hours are the Roman Catholic devotional tradition of
spending an hour in Eucharistic Adoration in the presence
of the Blessed Sacrament. The bishops have created a
variety of holy hours that focus our prayer to Jesus Christ
on peace, life, vocations, and other topics that are at the
heart of the life of the Church and the world.

AUTISM AWARENESS MONTH
April is Autism Awareness Month, and the archdiocesan Department of Special Needs Ministries offers training, resources, and supports for clergy, pastoral staff, and catechists. Of note are two new resources to help translate our faith to persons on the spectrum - the Loyola Press Adapted Finding God program, designed for students who are visual/experiential learners, and online professional training for catechists from the University of Dayton's Institute for Pastoral Initiatives. The department can connect you to these resources, and also provide your parish with Autism Pew Cards, highlighting Catholic resources and information of interest to all parishioners.
