From the President’s office
Dear Alumni, Parents and Friends,
The St. Joseph High School community has been the direct recipient of tremendous generosity throughout its 52 year history. Because of the confidence that has been placed in the leadership and faculty of the school, we remain committed to being good stewards of your gifts. Transparency is a vital part of the process. On behalf of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart and the entire St. Joseph community, I thank all of our benefactors - alumni, current and alumni parents, faculty and staff, friends, corporations, foundations and small businesses for your steadfast support during the past school year. “The St. Joe’s Way”, inspired by the traditions of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart, was born in the 1960’s when the new school and its students decided to make excellence the measure of success. This mindset continues to motivate our entire school community and has resulted in many new donors providing assistance to our current students with strong academic, spiritual and athletic resources. Your support of our myriad of activities, such as the Brother Bernardine, SC Golf Tournament, the Annual Fund, Founder’s Day, dedicated scholarship fund gifts, as well as the
extraordinary gifts of our parents’ clubs allow us to make improvements to our facilities, provide increased tuition assistance to current families and promote faculty development. Simply put, your investment in St. Joe’s allows us to maintain an affordable tuition, providing an exceptionally well-rounded education in this era of continuously rising costs. A perfect example is the growth of technology at St. Joe’s. Our five year Master Plan called for a greater influence of technology in the school day. A bequest from the Wendell family several years ago allowed us to purchase I-Pads for every faculty and staff member. We were also able to outfit 20 rooms with flat screen TV’s and Apple TV’s, which allow the teacher to project what is on the IPad to the TV. In addition, an anonymous donation of $37,000 provided the seed money for our wireless network. Today, thanks to the support of our community, St. Joseph’s is wireless. Our 2012-2013 school year was fast paced and exciting on many levels. Our graduating senior class accumulated over $28,000,000 in college scholarships with 84% of its members getting at least one scholarship. Our SAT scores were outstanding, with an average of 566 for the Reading portion, 592 for Math and 563 for Writing. Our History Team were State Champions and, once again, we had a Champion in the National History Bee. Our Mathematics Team won the Catholic League Honors and our student newspaper The Falcon, as well as our student literary magazine the Vignette, won national honors. Our senior class had a National Merit Finalist and 11 Commended students. We administered
over 400 AP exams to our juniors and seniors. Our athletic teams won 4 County Championships (Swimming, Hockey, Golf, and Basketball). The Volleyball Team won a Sectional Championship, while our Basketball Team captured its 2nd straight Non-Public A State Championship. Aligning with our mission of service, our Student Council Annual Thanksgiving Food Drive raised over $15,000 in contributions and helped feed over 400 families throughout the state. Student contributions allowed our Student Council and Campus Ministry to play Santa to dozens of disadvantaged children in our area at our annual Christmas On Campus. The generosity of our students also provided thousands of dollars for local charities and the mission work of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart throughout the world. Once again, our students excelled in the classrooms and extracurricular activities, and also showed an acute awareness for social concerns. We are thankful for all the success of our students but we realize that the school cannot remain stagnant in its thinking, teaching and learning. Our administration and faculty continue to work on the Middle States recommendations from 6 years ago. This past year, we purchased a professional development package (PD360), which allows our faculty access to online professional development. The accomplishments and challenges of our school community over the past few years have indeed been exciting. We strive to fulfill our mission daily, and realize that much more remains to be done. Our success in so many fields has not altered our core values. St. Joseph High School still offers something for everyone and is still a stepping stone for future dreams. It remains a Brothers of the Sacred Heart School, where young men are taught to be resilient in spirit and unafraid to pray. It is a school that breeds leaders in academic, athletic and spiritual endeavors. Our community spirit and the willingness to seek excellence in every aspect of our community life occur only with your confidence and commitment. We work together for a greater cause - furthering the Charism of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart and believing in their mission of educating today’s youth. Thank you for being such an integral part of St. Joseph High School yesterday, today and tomorrow.
Sincerely,
Lawrence N. Walsh ’68President

Br. Aldric Smith, SC"I'd like to think I didmy share of good here"
BBrother Aldric Smith, SC passed away on May 29, 2013 at the age of 90. He entered the novitiate of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart in 1937, when he was 15 years old, at what would become St. Joseph High School in Metuchen. After one year, he took his vows and began his journey as a Brother, teaching at various schools while advanc-ing his own education and directing the novitiate.
In 1963, Br. Aldric returned to Metuchen to serve as Vice Principal of the fledgling St. Joseph High School. From that time for-ward, he would serve in a variety of roles: Principal, French and Latin Teacher, Lan-guage Department Chair, Director of Guid-ance, as well as maintaining the school’s heating and cooling facility. He also be-gan the highly successful swimming pro-gram at St. Joe’s to which he dedicated himself whole heartedly. In whatever role he served, Br. Aldric inspired faculty and students alike with his devoted, unending service, humbleness and intellect.
This is a look at Br. Aldric through his years at St. Joe’s.

“Our first state championship in 1980 proved that we had arrived on the scene as the swimming powerhouse.”
“Throughout the years, I have enjoyed my various positions, as well as the responsibility and hard work they have entailed"

College Bowl Team to a 5th Place finish, out of 130 teams
from across the country, at the National History Bowl in April, while capturing New Jersey Player of the Year honors. The History Team won its 3rd straight State Championship.
Karl Towns ’14 made national headlines in December when
he declared his intent to attend, and play basketball for,
the University of Kentucky. It was a thrilling year for the 7’
sophomore who also won the prestigious NJ Gatorade Player
of the Year award and had a documentary made about his
journey by MSG Varsity, which can be viewed through the
alumni website.

Summary of Contributions
It is with great confidence and a steadfast dedication to Catholic education that our donors committed gifts to the 2012-2013 Annual Fund. Challenging economic times are forcing difficult decisions, but the St. Joseph High School Annual Fund continues to remain a philanthropic priority for many of our donors. We are deeply grateful for our community of alumni, current parents, alumni parents, faculty and staff, friends, busi-nesses and foundations and the role they play in helping us remain competitive and strong. We also commend the diligence and hard work of the many volunteers who comprise the Mothers Club, the Fathers Club, the Phon-A-Thon contingent, the Brother Bernardine, S.C. Memorial Golf Classic Commit-tee and the Founder’s Day Committee. This publication is a testament to your tireless efforts. Since St. Joseph High School opened in 1961, the school has benefited from the generous support of our constituencies to help advance a myriad of programs, projects and activities that allow the school to meet the evolving demands of a competitive education. As a non-profit educational institution, St. Joseph High School relies on private donations to meet the an-nual, capital and endowment needs of our school. In reviewing the Annual Report, we trust that both current and potential donors will become better informed of the school’s needs and the varied opportunities available for giving. St. Joe’s is worthy of your investment. It is an investment in the formation and future of a child evolving into a young man. In a school with our unique mission, your gift to St. Joseph High School truly makes a difference in the lives of our students.

Endowment and Scholarship Funds
St. Joseph High School strives to attract a diverse student body comprised of the best students from all cultural, religious and socio-economic backgrounds. With tuition at private schools rising, the scholarship program aims to support this effort by providing aid to deserving students who might not otherwise afford a St. Joe’s education. Endowed scholarships are often established in memory of a deceased loved one or to honor a person or family, providing a lasting tribute. The principle of the gift remains secure while a portion of the interest each year provides tuition assistance for deserving students. At this time, the funding requirement for a named endowed scholarship is $25,000, which can be paid over a three-year period. The “Excellence in Scholarship” initiative, designed to build the endowment to allow for additional financial aid and scholarship opportunities, seeks both individual and class gifts that can honor or memorialize a family member or friend. The goal is to build the endowment to $10 million over the next ten years. A fully funded program, one that guarantees the legacy of the founding Brothers of the Sacred Heart, will provide $500,000 each year in aid and scholarships, freeing funds appropriated in the Operating Budget toward other pressing needs. To date, over $1.5 million in extraordinary gifts of confidence has been raised, seeding the fund for long-term growth.

The 2012-2013 Annual Fund launched with a ‘sales’ training spearheaded by alumni John O’Donnell ‘74 and Frank Fitzgerald ‘67. This enhancement yielded record breaking results for a total of $20,885 raised in 4 evenings throughout the fall and spring semesters. The National Honor Society students led by their staff mentor, Carl Santiago, enthusiastically took to the phones. Many of the donors were delighted to hear from our students and felt it really brought the importance of their gift to light. We are also grateful for Bill and Pat Vanderzee for the time they dedicate to helping with Phon-A-Thon.

The Fathers Club would like to thank the faculty, staff, parents and alumni for their support of our activities throughout the past year. Perennial events like the Arts & Crafts Fair, the Super 50/50 Raffle and Lacrosse Fest continue to be successful fundraising efforts for the club and the school. While officers change and members come and go, as it should be in any parent’s club, our steadfast moderator, Brother Ronald Cairns, S.C., has been a constant source of spiritual guidance, energy, and friendship. All of us involved in the Fa-ther’s Club, or who benefit from our activities, are deeply indebted to him for his tireless effort and com-mitment.
Over the years, funds raised by the Fathers Club have allowed the school to purchase buses, the scoreboard in the gym, the track (many, many years ago), as well as contributing to the building of Woodburn Hall and refurbishing the weight room. Recently, the Fathers Club helped sponsor the Advent Mass and Tree Light-ing Ceremony and the Br. Bernardine, S.C. Memorial Golf Classic, and made a substantial contribution to the new campus athletic field project.
Again, we thank everyone for their past efforts and support and look forward to another successful year.
Sincerely, Chris Kozub ‘80President
