Called to Worship, Empowered to Serve
Sentimental Journeys
Join us in honoring members who are 80 years and older.
Congregation, family and friends are all encouraged to attend!
Sentimental JourneyLuncheon
Everyone, no matter your age, is encouraged to come and support our most senior
members—those whose faithfulness and labors have built Starmount into the special
place of love and spirituality that it is. The Caring Committee oversees this event.
The luncheon will be catered by Culinary Visions at a cost of $10.00/person for those
under age 80. Gluten free meals will be available. Reservations will be taken
through Friday, May 11. Registrations are available in the Sunday bulletin as well as
on the church website, www.starmountpres.org.
Come and tap your toes to favorite
tunes made popular by Ella Fitzgerald,
Frank Sinatra, and many more
brought to you by local artist Lynne
Goodwin. You are sure to go away
with a fond remembrance of the
songs that made hearts beat way
back when...
Hope to see you there!

CLERGY The book of Psalms is
filled with beautiful poetry
and powerful prayers. I’ll
bet we each have one or
two Psalms that are our
favorites or that we may
even know by heart. One of
the Psalms that I am
particularly fond of is the first one, Psalm 1,
mostly because of the vivid imagery it uses.
“Happy are those who do not follow
the advice of the wicked, or take the path
that sinners tread, or sit in the seat of
scoffers; but their delight is in the law of the
Lord, and on his law they meditate day
and night. They are like trees planted by
streams of water, which yield their fruit in its
season, and their leaves do not wither.” -
Psalm 1:1-3
I love this image of a tree that is
planted by a flowing stream, whose roots
reach deep down and can constantly
drink from its life giving water. This image
serves as a reminder to me to plant myself
close to Christ so that I may drink deeply of
the same “living water” that Jesus promised
to the woman he encountered at the well
(John 4). It reminds me to draw near to
God each and every day through the
regular practices of prayer, worship, and
service to others.
Another reason I am fond of this
image found in Psalm 1 is that it reminds me
of one of my primary tasks here as your
new pastor. I am to plant myself here at
the “Starmount stream” and to drink
deeply of its waters. One of the ways I am
doing this is in our regular conversations,
whether here at the church, out for a cup
of coffee, or in your homes. In these
conversations I am listening. Listening for
the stories that define who you are and
who we are as a congregation. Listening
for those things that you are worried about
or cause you concern. Listening for the
hopes and dreams you have for the future
of Starmount. I have only just begun to
listen and learn from each of you, but I
have already learned so much and I look
forward to our continued conversations.
I am also happy to report that there
are meaningful conversations about the
future of this congregation occurring
among the Session. I have only had two
Session meetings so far, but I have also met
with our Elders in small groups, and I can
already tell that they are a great group!
They have been discussing two tough
topics, budgeting and staffing, in the last
several months, and I am impressed with
the openness and honesty in which they
are approaching these important
discussions. My impressions of the Session as
a whole is that they have a very positive
outlook on the future of this congregation
moving forward, and so do I. There are
many good things already happening here
at Starmount as well as so much potential
that is waiting to be unleashed.
In an effort to unlock the future
potential of Starmount, the Session has
requested some further study on the
strategic direction of the church so that we
might have a clearer picture of what God’s
will for this congregation might be at this
particular time. Therefore, over the coming
weeks, we will be working on how we might
build off of the foundation of the Mission
Study that was completed during the
transition period, and create a focused
strategic plan for the church. More
information about this process will be
forthcoming, but we will certainly need your
input and participation as we together seek
God’s collective calling upon this
congregation.
Your Pastor,
Charlie Lee

May Worship Notes The old joke goes: what are
the seasons in North
Carolina? Fall, Winter, Spring,
and Construction Season.
As we approach the
summer, Starmount will make this joke
become reality – with its education hour!
The program year wraps up on Sunday, May 20.
Beginning Memorial Day weekend (May 27),
education hour before worship will be on its
own summer vacation. During that time, it will
be under construction with great planning
already underway for a shiny and new look
for the fall when we return to our program
year on Kickoff Sunday, September 9.
The Faith Formation committee and its staff
are moving toward taking a summer
vacation from the education hour – during
that time, faith formation will be “under
construction” and return on kickoff Sunday
(September 9) “shiny and new”…this is in
attempts to properly roll out small groups and
other opportunities for learning, including
other classes like The Story that Mary Jane
Conger and Parks Williams are leading so
dedicatedly. Our prayer is that this will allow
for a “summer vacation” for our fine teachers
and others… We will be presenting some other
opportunities throughout the summer
including some Wednesday nights, so please
make sure to look to the newsletter for them!
If you have any questions, please let me
know.
Blessings,
Pastor Kathryn

JUST LUNCH Just Lunch, Starmount’s monthly gathering for
lunch following worship on the third Sunday
of the month, has been a great way for
members to have fellowship, one with
another. This month, all who would normally
plan to attend Just Lunch are encouraged to
attend Starmount’s Sentimental Journey – a
celebration of Starmount’s members who are
80 and older. Due to busy schedules in the
summer, Just Lunch will take a break and
return to the regular calendar in September.
Hope you plan to join the hosts when it
resumes on September 16th!

CHILDREN & FAMILY EVENTS
PARENTS NIGHT OUT! Parents of children up to 5th grade are invited
to drop kids off at the church on Saturday
evening, May 19, from 4:30-7:30 pm for
Parent’s Night Out! Parents can enjoy an
early evening of "adulting" while the kiddos
have fun at church. Drop kids off for play time,
pizza, and a movie. The cost is $10 per child;
must have a minimum of four registered by
May 13 to go ahead with the event. If you
have any questions or would like to register,
please contact Cindy Lee.
YOUTH Last month seven of our youth were
accompanied by three adults and one SPY Kid
on a mission trip to Jacksonville, FL. During our
week in Jacksonville we got to see all different
sides of the largest land-mass city in the US. We
did yard work at a church which builds and
renovates homes for low income families. We
helped pack food at food banks. We
participated in crafts and activities with friends
at a center for adults with developmental
disabilities. We painted walls and organized
storage at a center that works for the
independent living of people with any
disability. And of course, we played on the
beach. Each night we came together and
discussed scripture but also ways in which we
can translate our service back to life at home
in Greensboro. You are encouraged to ask
the youth about their experience both in
Jacksonville and since returning home. They
have some funny stories to share! A huge
thank you to Neil Huffman and Dan Johnson
for their help and guidance on this trip. Look for your May SPY Calendars in your inbox
and around the church! We are getting close
to the end of the school year so let Laura know
of any activities you want to have this summer!
YOUNG ADULTS In the first weeks of May, college students will
be taking their final exams. Our Starmount
students received care packages as a sign of
support from our church family. We invite you
to pray for them during this time and joyfully
receive them as some return home for the
summer.
Guinness and the Good News continues at The
Porterhouse Bar & Grill! If you are a young adult
and would like to enjoy fellowship, food, and
great conversation, meet Pastor Kathryn and
others at 4608 W. Market Street (between
Montrose and N. Westgate Drive) for the
gathering’s next installment on Wednesday,
May 2 at 8 p.m.
ATTENTION GRADUATES! All who are graduating in 2018 from high
school, college and graduate school will be
recognized in worship on June 3. If you (or
your child) are graduating this spring, please
make sure to get the information to Laura
Roberson (resident@starmountpres.org) by
Sunday, May 27. Make sure to mark your
calendars and be in worship on Sunday, June 3,
so we can celebrate your accomplishments!
COLLEGE GRANT OPPORTUNITY The Young People’s Fund, overseen by
the Faith Formation Committee, provides
educational grants to members of Starmount
Presbyterian Church. This is a one-time grant
for incoming college freshmen or graduate
students. If you are interested in applying,
please write a letter or send an email to Pastor
Kathryn at kathryn@starmountpres.org by

______________written by Jennifer Dowler
What training does a certified
yoga instructor require? The key word is “certified.” A
certified yoga instructor has
attended a yoga school which has
gone through a rigorous
application process with Yoga
Alliance and includes a set
curriculum to ensure that their graduates are
well trained. Yes, there are many “yoga
teachers” who have bypassed this requirement
and rely simply on their own experiences. Their
skills may be exceptional, adequate, or
dangerously inadequate. That is why I suggest
that students ask if their instructor is certified
with Yoga Alliance.
To become a certified yoga instructor and
register with the international Yoga Alliance,
candidates attend a certified yoga school for a
minimum of 200 hours of instruction. Those 200
hours include physical instruction in teaching
yoga postures safely and learning their
Sanskrit names, anatomy and physiology,
history and philosophy of yoga, meditation,
comparison of the many schools of yoga,
ethical guidelines for teaching and lifestyle,
how to work with special health needs,
professional ethics and boundaries,
Ayurveda, and a plethora of outside the
classroom reading. Qualified schools also
require observation and supervised
teaching hours with other certified
teachers.
There are at least four schools in Greensboro
offering teacher training in yoga. My 200
hour training was completed with the
Institute of Integrative Yoga Therapy and
consisted of nine months of intense training.
I am currently enrolled at Triad Yoga in the
next phase of training to complete my 300
hour certification. This phase takes two
years of classes and experience. The next
phase is training in yoga therapy and is a
1000 hour course taking years to complete. A committed yoga teacher continues to
learn and improve by taking classes with
other yoga instructors and by expanding
his or her own knowledge by constant
study. Only by constantly learning and
challenging ourselves can we share our
best abilities with our students.

Summer Fellowship
______________written by Cuyler McKnight,
Elder & Committee Chair
Your committee is focusing on all aspects of
stewardship this year. We are considering how
each member of our Starmount congregation
can play a vital part in the growth of our
church. Through time, talents, and tithes,
everyone in the church can contribute to the
health of our church, in every area of our
mission as followers of Christ.
Encouraging our young people to participate
in youth activities and learn to tithe will give
them a firm foundation to grow in Christian
faith. Asking our young adults to actively
participate in our many church activities will
continue the vibrancy of the church for years to
come. Providing our seniors with opportunities
to leave a legacy to the church will help meet
special needs in our witness and mission
programs in the future.
We strongly encourage every member of our
church family to realize the gifts that Christ has
given them, and how each of us can use these
gifts to help make things happen at Starmount!
This is our chance to help the church move into
the future, healthy, enthusiastic, and financially
stable to well represent the body of Christ.
STEWARDSHIP COMMITTEE
With the last of winter finally behind us, we are
looking forward to and planning for some fun
fellowship events this spring and summer. Mark
these on your calendar now and plan to have
some fun!
As anticipated, we will begin offering
Lemonade on the Porch after Sunday service
beginning Memorial Day through Labor Day.
The Fellowship Committee will provide the
lemonade and water, but we need two
volunteers each Sunday to help serve. (We are
foregoing cookies because the summer heat
typically melts them too quickly.) All supplies
will be located in the workroom on a cart, and
the ushers will set up the table. A Signup
Genius form will be available beginning May 1st
to sign up to help host.
Come watch our own baseball power hitter
Matt Winters on Sunday, June 10 at 2 PM throw
out the first pitch and then sit back and enjoy
the Greensboro Grasshoppers take on the
Lakewood Blue Claws (PHI) at First National
Bank Field. We will start taking reservations for
our annual baseball outing online May 1 or
through bulletin inserts on May 13 and 20. Tickets
are $8. Please sign up either online, through
the bulletin insert, or let Elaine Gustafson or
Brenda Triplett know of your interest by May 20th
so we can reserve tickets.
July, August, and September fellowship events
are being confirmed and will be shared later
this summer, including our annual Swim and
Tennis Social at Hamilton Lakes. Keep an eye
out for them and for other events for the fall
like Wonderful Wednesdays, Trunk or Treat, and
the Fall Retreat at Montreat (November 9-11).

Men’s Golf Outing - May 18-19 It is that time of year again!! The Starmount
Men’s Golf Outing will carry on its tradition!
We are doing it a bit different this year as we will be
local! Without going into detail, the out-of-town
accommodations and tee times needed were not
available, therefore, it was not realistic to travel this
year. That being said, we are still on for a great
weekend of fun and fellowship. Here is how the
weekend is shaping up: Friday May 18th
Bryan Park Golf Course- the first tee time is 12:18.
Teams TBD. Come out a bit early to swing a club,
putt or grab a sandwich. We will gather at the first
tee to prayerfully support the first group off!
Immediately following the round we will head to
Kurt’s (3909 Hazel Lane) for heavy hors doeurvres
(fancy finger foods!) and cocktails.
Depending on our schedule, the Grasshoppers are
home and all are welcome to head that way
afterward! Saturday May 19th
Bryan Park Golf Course- first tee time is 10:41.
Teams TBD.
After the round, an emergency 9 may be called
for those not having gotten all their bad shots out
of their systems!
6 pm- We will meet at Natty Greene’s Kitchen &
Market (2003 Yanceyville St). We have reserved
the Deck Bar for drinks and dinner. This is a beautiful
indoor/outdoor area that is ours for the evening.
Cost - Best we can figure it will be WAY CHEAPER
than last year since we are local!!! We will get a
budget soon, but think of a worst case scenario
of $100-125 for the two rounds of golf, Friday Night
and Saturday Night. More to follow as we hammer
out details and get numbers set!
What to do next- RSVP TO KURT-NOW!!!! Or at least
by May 1st. Shoot Kurt an email at
k.kronenfeld@aol.com or text at 336-202-7207 to let him know you are playing and participating in after
round festivities!
With the flexibility of golf rounds and being local, we
hope that we can include more guys this year!

Truly the Community, Romans 12,
and How to Be the Church by
Marva Dawn. “This is theology at its
best. Dawn handles the biblical text
masterfully in rendering her
translation, and in communicating
it in such a way that it makes sense,
and she is incredibly thought provoking in the
way she calls believers to live it out... Through
Dawn's rendering, I was challenged by the
biblical truths about community. Often, I
found myself stopping to think something
over, to mediate on a thought, or simply to
let something sink in.” “Many writers have
decried the lack of intimacy and community
in our contemporary culture. Few of them,
however, provide a fully biblical description
of community or give specific methods for its
recovery. Through an intensive study of
Romans 12, Marva Dawn here offers precisely
this kind of practical guidance for building vital
Christian community life.” Reviews from

The Untethered Soul, The Journey
Beyond Yourself by Michael
Singer. “Most human beings are
completely unaware that most of
the thoughts in our mind are
completely untrue. YET, we
believe them, follow them, become
emotionally entangled in them, allow them
to change our mood, allow them to change
our behavior. This book was also freeing in
the sense that I let go of needing others to
behave in a certain way in order for me to
be OK…When I realized I was trying to
manipulate outside circumstances for me to
feel OK in life, the shift needed to be made
within ME for me to be OK in life, total game

History Corner written by Mary Jane Conger, Church Historian
Another big month in the first year
of Starmount Presbyterian Church
in its newly constructed building.
From the written report of the
nominating committee: “Allen
McSween is 37 years old. He was born in Dillon,
S.C. where his father was pastor of the
Presbyterian Church there. He graduated from
Presbyterian College (1938) at Clinton, S.C. and
Union Theological Seminary (1941). In 1940 he
married Miss Irene Dillard. They have 3 sons.
He had a reserve commission in the infantry.
He served as a platoon commander for
six months then transferred to the Corps of
Chaplains. He served as a chaplain overseas for
three years. His service included the North African
campaign and the invasion of Italy. He received
the Legion of Merit for his work on the Anzio
Beachhead. His first and only pastorate before
being called to Starmount was at First Presbyterian
Church at Lincolnton, NC.” May 17, 1953 a call by
the congregation was given to Allen Crews
McSween to become first pastor of the church.
From part of the official call "And that you be
free from worldly cares and avocations, we, on
our part, promise and oblige ourselves to pay you
the sum of $6,000.00 a year in regular monthly
installments, together with free use of manse,
$50.00 a month car allowance..."
May 17th was also The Dedication Service of The
Starmount Presbyterian Church. The brief sketch of
building and organization inserted in bulletin stated:
"The Church is at present fully organized with nine
Elders, ten Deacons; a congregation numbering
nearly 250, Sunday School enrollment of 212; and
Women of the Church 120."
The charter membership roll was closed on May 17,
1953 when the building was dedicated.

STARMOUNT COMMUNITY GARDEN Saturday, April 14, the first workday for the
community garden, was a beautiful day. Bad
weather has hindered our start this season, but
16 gardeners, ages 5 to 85, came out to harvest
kale, spread compost, weed and till beds, plant
seeds, dig a ditch and enjoy fellowship with
each other while we did the chores for the
day. We are at the garden every Saturday,
weather permitting, doing what we can to
grow food for the hungry. Join us, come when
you can.
