The UK and Space
Over 50 years involvement in space– As a provider of systems– As a user of data services
The UK Space Agency leads our civil space programme– Coordination– Regulation– Investment (~ £380M p.a.)– ~ 100 staff
Active Internationally, in Europe, and NationallyThe space sector in the UK is recognised as a critical national infrastructure (assets and people)
Turnover & Employment
The Sector’s AmbitionThe industry-led Space Growth Action Plan (2014) identified 5 top-level recommendations1. Quadruple space / space-enabled markets to £40bn by 2030
• Creating 100,000 new high-value jobs• Growing UK share of global market from 6.5% to 10%• Grow UK sector to £40bn
2. Make the UK the best place to grow Space business3. Increase the UK’s returns from Europe4. Grow exports from £2bn to £25bn p.a. by 20305. Stimulate a vibrant regional SME sector

Wider impact
Applications of space technology to solve earth-based problems– Technology transfer from space programmes
Space has relevance across the UK
Low cost access to space – A new paradigm for volume manufacturing opens
up new supply chain opportunities
Data and applications– Underpin key industrial sectors including agritech,
automotive ( including driverless cars), aerospace, maritime and energy
– Trend to increased availability of data (some free)– Political commitment and funding – Facilities and expertise to support exploitation

The New Space Sector
Rapid expansion Start-ups, SMEs, Corporates. UK and inward investors
The problem: Businesses do not know the opportunities – why look to space? The space sector doesn’t know the businesses that can respond to
these opportunities
Broader engagement helps us to grow the new space sector Capitalising on world class expertise and facilities in Universities
and industry Supporting the development of local space communities (especially
in downstream “space-enabled” markets) Joining up local and national support
Business Incubation – why? The sector needs new bloodWe want new companies to have the best possible
chance of survival New space companies are high-tech / high-growth
potential Mutual interest between incubators and the space sector
incubators spread around the country in Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Cornwall, or wherever, linked back to Harwell to use the facilities and know- how created there, but we want the businesses all round the country.”
“One of the other elements at Harwell is the business incubator, which is a joint activity between STFC and the European Space Agency. It has already created a couple of dozen businesses: micro-businesses at the moment, but hopefully they will grow in the future. That is a great model and it works, but if we are to create the number of businesses we want, we need perhaps to think about space business
Business Incubation – Our Approach
Expansion of provision - building on success ESA BIC SETsquared Catalytic funding for existing incubators
Advantages Raising awareness Linking to existing local infrastructure

Supporting Regional Growth
Raising awareness Both with Local Enterprise Partnerships/Devolved
Administrations and local business support providers of the opportunities in the space sector and where support can be found
Building communities Dedicated resource “on the ground” to develop local
networks, broker relationships and link to national opportunities
Networks, Regional Centres of Excellence (in partnership with Satellite Applications Catapult)

UK Space Conference
The aim of the UK Space Conference is to be inclusive and forward looking:
To bring together people and groups from within and outside the space community.
To exchange visions and ideas for using space, its technology and satellite enabled-services to shape our future.
To discuss how new knowledge and space-based capabilities can drive social and economic progress into the 2030s and beyond.
