Ten steps to follow:

• Baseline information and review;• Vision and goals;• Objectives;• Review of legislation and control measures;• Impact assessment;• Impact management and mitigation;• Decision-making;• Implementation:• Monitoring and reporting;• Adaptive management.

• Currently the biggest industry in the world• 700 million international travelers yearly

The largest migration in mankind – every year!

Yes, tourism can contribute to

environmental protection!

By:• Generating government revenues • Supporting conservation and

protection initiatives• Raising environmental awareness

However, there are lots of

environmental impacts to

address…

• Loss of biodiversity • Ecosystem degradation • Depletion of natural resources• Pollution, waste & littering • Contribution to climate change • Physical impacts from construction &

deforestation

Yes,tourism creates economic

growth & employment!

….mostly indirectly, through its boosting effect on other economic sectors.

However, there are costs …

– Tourism demand & infrastructure investment grow faster than local industries capacity to supply

– Economic leakages through foreign ownership, international tour operators, and imports of tourism products

– From US$ 100 spent in a developing country stays only US$ 5! (UNEP)

– High costs for infrastructure development– Increased prices for locals

Yes, tourism can engage local

communities

• Contributes to job creation and improvement of life standards

• Educates and raises awareness of local communities on local values

• Enhance local pride & identity• Contributes to understanding between

religions & people of differend cultures

• Crime generation & drug introduction• Child labor• Prostitution and sex tourism• Loss of cultures and traditions• Social disruption• Cultural clashes

However, social impacts are

probably the most shocking!

As a result….There is a rise and fall in locals’ acceptance of tourism!
