Two students from Ohaupo School have won recognition in a prestigious international poetry
competition after being taught how to write Senryu, a form of Haiku, in their class. The
competition was the New Zealand Poetry Society International Competition and the winning
entries are to be published in a book called the Unnecessary Invention of Punctuation edited by
acclaimed poet and author Gail Ingram.
The two winning students were Year 7 students from the Kauri Hub, Ally Smith and Paige Keith
who received Highly Commended and Commended in the section which received entries from NZ
and international primary, and secondary schools. Their whole literacy group entered after Val
Millington spotted that there was a children's section in the national event event that she herself
was competing in. The judge singled Ally’s entry out for comment, “ I loved that the writer used
imagery to keep the audience wondering and used a high level of insight in the show-me-don't-
tell-me technique”.
Mrs Millington herself was selected to have four of her own entries published in the
anthology.“The judge said of one of Mrs Millington’s entries: my culture “I’m all in favour of
using bicultural imagery and language, making haiku uniquely tricultural in New Zealand.
I commend my culture as a pioneer in this fusion’ ‘’.
The anthology was launched in Wellington on 8 November 2018. The Year Book of Ohaupo School
will feature more fully the details of their success. anthology can be purchased from the NZ
Poetry Society online.
