The City Tram Extension is the first stage of the AdeLINK tram network
The City Tram Extension represents the first stage of the South Australian Government’s planned AdeLINK tram network, a key part of the revitalisation of Adelaide’s public transport system. AdeLINK aims to connect the north, south, east and west of the metropolitan area, ease city congestion, reduce our carbon footprint and boost employment opportunities with local jobs and contractors to be utilised as much as possible during the project.
Expanding the tram network will attract investment, increase economic activity, encourage urban renewal and uplift. The project is also expected to stimulate residential development across the CBD, inner and middle of the Adelaide metropolitan area while bringing more residents and visitors to the city centre.
The City Tram Extension forms Stage One of the EastLINK with future stages planned to the eastern suburbs. The extension is also the first step in the CityLINK loop around the CBD.
City Tram Extension The State Government has committed funding for the first stage of the AdeLINK tram network to the city’s East End, including the purchase of three additional trams.
This project will deliver a one-kilometre extension of the tram line along North Terrace, from King William Street to East Terrace, and an extension along King William Road. The extension will:
• provide a new service to the East End shopping, restaurant and tourism precinct
• further invigorate the city's premier cultural and education boulevard
• help to reactivate vacant sites, including key buildings along North Terrace
• feature four new stops servicing the Festival Plaza on King William Road, the museum and library precinct on North Terrace, the university precinct on North Terrace and the Old Royal Adelaide Hospital Site on North Terrace.
The City of Adelaide will contribute $5 million by providing upgrades to the Public Realm along North Terrace and contributing to the East End tram stop.

Next stepsFeedback is important and will be considered in the planning process. Construction will start August 2017.
A number of early works will be undertaken including relocation of services and modifications to the existing kerb line of North Terrace. These works will occur at night to minimise impact on businesses and the community.
We will work closely with businesses, property owners and major facilities to provide early warning of any disruptions.
