Inside this Issue:
Back to the Basics
Summerme is usually a li le calmer, a li le slower, a li le more relaxing. Whether that
means spending me in the garden, enjoying sunsets and the great outdoors, or geng
away for a trip - we look forward to the summer. I figured it might be the perfect me to
get back to the basics about what are our foundaons in the faith. I think it might be a
really good thing. Let me tell you why. It’s not like we don’t talk about the foundaonal
ma ers of the faith – we do. They all inform what we believe, how we discern God’s
presence, and how we respond. But somemes we need to isolate those individual top-
ics to gain greater appreciaon and focus.
For example, somemes I eat instant oatmeal with some
peach bits or even have canned peaches, but when it is
August and I eat a fresh peach there is a big difference.
I savor that serving of fresh fruit, because I know that in its
simplicity and deliciousness there is something special.
So, during August – we’ll focus on some of the foundaons
of our faith: the Bible, prayer, Jesus, and worship.
Together let’s savor them and consider the great value and
meaning they each have for us. It is my hope that we’ll see them as the foundaons we
should have throughout the year, and throughout our lives.
I hope to see you Sunday!
Grace & Peace,
Erich

Humility
Why is being humble a trait considered strong?
Like a misplaced lyric in a beau.ful song.
Strength seems to be, and made only complete
by boldness of victory without any defeat.
Jesus’ life is an example of gra.tude grand.
Did he realize at youth He was the “son of man?”
A carpenters helper was a modest beginning
for a man designated to pay for our sinning.
He showed compassion for a world that was lost.
Why should He be the one to pay such a cost?
He became glorified by the sacrifice He made.
Now all of mankind need never be afraid.
Humility comes when we think of our Master.
Our “prince of peace” to avoid disaster.
The kind man He was leads us to believe
that blessings through meekness ar ours to receive
Humility is the strength proved by God’s grace.
When this life is ore and we look into His face.
Ever to be with Him, the one who is adored
and living eternal life with Jesus Christ our Lord.
Walton Gordon

“Lord, Teach Us to Pray”
District Event - Manor Memorial UMC, New Market, VA Friday &
Saturday Evening - October 4-5, 2019
Lay Servants Approved Course! Clergy CEU Approved Course!
The Harrisonburg District is sponsoring a special event to be held at
Manor Memorial UMC, New Market. The Aldersgate Renewal Min-
istries (ARM) will be providing the leadership and teaching this
event. ARM equips local churches to minister to the world in the
power of the Holy Spirit. Volunteers who are trained by ARM go to
churches to provide teaching and group facilitaon. Mary O. Jones
of Front Royal, will be our ARM Coordinator and lead “Lord, Teach
Us to Pray” with her volunteer team of 4-5 volunteers. This event is
“designed to encourage God’s people to become people of prayer.”
Mary was trained shortly aGer the “Lord, Teach Us to Pray” seminar
was created and has successfully led many of these events.
From Friday evening through Saturday evening, October 4-5, 2019,
the vision is to have each parcipant grow and/or establish a vi-
brant prayer life by employing various tools and teaching to be
offered and energized by the Power of the Holy Spirit. The event
will be open to all who wish to grow in their relaonship with God
through prayer. This event has the potenal to change lives and to
transform churches as parcipants are challenged to walk in inma-
cy with God through prayer. We hope that you will mark your cal-
endars and plan to a end. We are fortunate that it will be on the
Harrisonburg District! Although there will be an affordable registra-
on fee to help defray meal and handbook expenses, the exact
amount has not yet been determined. Specifics on registraon and
expenses will be published later this summer.
A local Steering Commi ee has been formed to help plan and pre-
pare for this. Ginger Turner of Manor Memorial UMC is the chair of
this commit-tee which is comprised so far of Robert Talbo , Advi-
sor; Faith Carlson, Ellen McDorman, Dale Dodrill, and Lee Pugh. Rev.
Dr. Gomez in concert with ARM has approved one Connuing Edu-
caon credit for clergypersons a ending the event. In addion, he
also approved this event to count toward Lay Servant cerficaon
or recerficaon (as a substuon for the Prayer course). If you
would like more informaon, you can go to:
h ps://aldersgaterenewal.org/events/local-church-events/lord-
teach-us-to-pray. The Steering Commi ee would welcome help in
various areas such as welcome and hospitality, transportaon,
prayer, meals, child care, publicity and registra-on. If you would
like to help with this wonderful opportunity, please contact Ginger
at vabellat@gmail.com or call her 540-740-4616.

MISSION WITNESS from the UMW 2019 Prayer Calendar.
This is one use of your giG to Missions.
I was named Sunday school teacher and honored with a
very large responsibility to teach children ages 4 to 10
about the love and the seed of hope in their hearts, teach
them through songs and games about the life of Jesus. I
loves to watch their faces when I tell them that Jesus
loves them so much that he gave his life for each of them
– their faces light up! I will always be very grateful to the
United Methodist Women for having awarded me the
scholarship and thus I was able to complete my studies.
You will always be in my heart and my prayer is that God
connues to bless your work.

News from Russia:
Pastor Irina reports they have purchased the new house
in Novatroitskaya which will be used to develop a new
United Methodist Church there, used to minister to the
Roma populaon in this village, used for aGer school help
and used as a gathering place. The house is quite large
(see Picture 2), it has several good-sized rooms (see Pic-
ture 1), a separate garage, what is called a Summer Room
between the house and garage (see Picture 3), and a large
undeveloped lot (see Picture 4). This house is quite typi-
cal of the homes you see in Russian villages. (If you are
curious, the pipe you see running above the wall in Pic-
ture 2 is the natural gas line that provides gas for heang,
domesc hot water and cooking.)
Members from a United Methodist church in Tulsa, OK
are traveling to Russia this summer to help construct a
fence around the back yard. Irina was able to buy this
home using grants funds she received from German Unit-
ed Methodist Youth who are engaged in helping the Roma
people in both Russia and Belarus. Irina is planning to
replace the windows and interior doors, update the kitch-
en and bathroom and do some painng. The pictures she
sent (see Pictures 5 and 6) show several volunteers scrap-
ing off the exisng wallpaper and preparing for other ren-
ovaon work. The people working in these pictures are
Roma to whom Irina’s church has been ministering. They
are overjoyed to receive Irina’s help.
