The may2014 Newsletter for First UMC Family and Friends
First United Methodist Messenger Rockingham, NC
A Message from Rev. Allison Farrah
This year we did not get to publish our Holy Week Devotional Guides as we normally do; however, we look forward to being back on
schedule next year. I missed reading mine each day, so I perused through the ones from previous years. It was such a pleasure to read
the meaningful devotions written by our own church members through the years. Each one spoke to me in a powerful way. One
particular devotion reminded me how very blessed I am to be part of a warm, loving church family. I think it also serves as an important
reminder for all of us to never give up on inviting people to church and to offer a warm greeting, genuine hospitality, and the love of
Christ to each and everyone who enters our doors. We never know when the ones we greet may be searching for a “home.” I hope you,
too, will be touched and encouraged by this devotion written by one of our faithful church members in 2009.
David and I found out that he was getting a promotion and we would be relocating to a new town around the same time I found out I
was pregnant. I wasn’t sure what to think. I was nervous and excited at the same time. Moving to a new town could be fun. And of
course having a new addition to our family was more exciting than I could ever imagine.
All of the excitement of moving, buying a new house, having a baby, and quitting my job to be a stay at home mom was a little more than
my emotions could handle. I missed my family and friends from my hometown, but I desperately wanted to make Rockingham my new
home. I just didn’t know how to do that. Being a stay at home mom doesn’t offer many opportunities for meeting new people. Even
though I had a lot to be thankful for, I felt empty and lonely.
One of David’s co-workers kept telling him about a wonderful church he had been going to and that we should attend one Sunday. I
had gone to the same church for 28 years so the thought of going somewhere different just didn’t seem right to me. I knew God would
lead me in the right direction and help be find my “home” but I just couldn’t imagine that it would be in a new church. Finally, I de-
cided that it wouldn’t hurt anything to go and see what this church had to offer.
From the moment I walked into First United Methodist Church, I felt at home. Many people greeted us and introduced themselves and
told us they were happy to have us visiting. Parker, our son, took right to the ladies in the nursery. I knew at that moment that God had
led me where I needed to be. The reason my life had not felt complete, even though I thought I had everything I wanted, was because I
was so caught up in my own grief and emotions that I forgot to ask God for help.
I have always been told that God will not give me any problem or situation that He knows I can’t handle. I know that firsthand now. I
am so grateful for our new church family. I know that I can have many “things” in life but without God, my life is not complete.
If you ever find yourself lost, always know that God will lead you home.
Mary Ivey Medlin
Mary Ivey and David Medlin, along with their children, Parker and Ivey Lynn, are now active members of FUMC. David and Mary
Ivey are intricately involved with the young adult ministry and Parker and Ivey Lynn are happily engaged in our children’s ministry.
David is a member of the Young Adult Sunday School class, a bus driver and oversees bus maintenance. Mary Ivey is leader of Circle
10, Children’s Sunday School teacher, and active with the Quilting for the Community ministry.
We never know how powerful an invitation, a warm smile, and a friendly welcome can be. Keep on keeping on for the Kingdom.
FUMC is a wonderful place to be as we Love God, Love Others, and Love the World.
UM Retirement Homes
Mother’s Day Offering Coming in May
Mother’s Day has become important to the United
Methodist family of the NC Annual Conference as
caring persons in all 8 districts combine efforts to
assist retirement residents whose financial resources
have been depleted. The Mother’s Day Offering
provides an opportunity for each of us to have a part
in providing a “more abundant life” for residents who
need financial support. Give generously on May 11.

Work team to Haiti dates set
On August 5th thru 13th of this year Mary Catherine Coltrane, Allison Farrah, and
Mike Sykes will travel to Haiti on a Volunteer in Mission work team. Butch
Huffman will lead the team of 17 persons in support of the Ryan Epps Home for
Children and other worthwhile projects. This international work team experience
has been in our prayers for a long time. We have supported ZOE for many years
and now God has provided another avenue for our church to participate in global
missions. If you would like to financially support this team, your gifts would be
greatly appreciated. There are 3 spots open on this trip if you are interested in
going but you need to act quickly.
Butch Huffman will also meet with anyone interested in a future work team
experience on May 22 @ 6:30 in the Bynum Building. This will be an
informational meeting and will not commit persons to go on the team. We will
be planning for a team from our church to go early next year.

Dear Church Family,
Thank you for all you have done for our
family during this difficult time. Joseph
loved this church and tried to live a Chris-
tian life. He touched so many
people in his short time on this earth.
We appreciate the love and support
you’ve given us. The prayers, food,
flowers, cards, visits, phone calls, and
Facebook have been such a comfort to us.
Please continue to pray for our family.
With love,
Lenae, Terry Ashley & Meagan

Senior Celebration
On Saturday, May 17 from 2:00 till 4:00 we will celebrate our seniors, those who have been around a long time but still have much in
missions to share with others. We also want to encourage our seniors to mission and mission teams between our churches. The day
will begin with worship. Dr. Belton Joyner will be our guest speaker. Dr. Joyner Is an excellent preacher. You will be blessed to hear
his message. Our own Helen Alexander will share her musical talent for the service.
Following worship, we will go to the fellowship hall where our local United Methodist Churches will have tables set-up to share their
on-going mission work. FUMC will also share in this mission-sharing opportunity. If you would like to have a table just let us know.
Light refreshments will be available as we share mission ideas together. It will be a great day!
So, what can we do to be supportive of this Senior Celebration?
