Centi = 0.01 or 1/100

Deci = 0.1 or 1/10

Length – “the Meter”How long is something? We use the Meter to measure

the length of objects

A meter is almost equal to a yard in the English System

* 1 yard= .9144 meter, 1 m = 3.28 feet, 1 yard = 3 feet

How many mm = 1 km ???

The “Need to Know” on the previous slide holds true for EVERY unit of measurement in the metric system! You can substitute in gram for meter, or liter for gram… all three have the same exact conversions!

Mass – “the Gram”

Mass is a measure like weight, or how heavy something is.

Measurement like ounces and pounds. The gram is closest to an ounce in the

English System of measurement(1 ounce weighs about the same as a slice of bread,

1 gram = about one paperclip!)

The gram comes in different sizes too!

Volume tells how much space an object takes up
