Muhammad’s early life570-595 a.d

• Father dies before he was born.

• Mother dies when he is 5 or 6

• Grandfather dies when he is 8-9

• Raised by Uncle Abu Talib until 25

• Becomes a caravaneer

Muhammad’s marriage to khadija (595 a.d)

• Wealthy widow – 15 years his senior

• Khadija’s Christian connections

• Role of Waraqa bin Naufal

• His first “vision” at age 40 (610 A.D.)

MUHAMMAD’S “REVELATIONS”

• First vision was a terrifying experience.

• Apparition demanded that Muhammad recite what he is told.

• Memorized by followers.

• Recitations were written down by scribes.

• Similar to Old and New Testament accounts and teachings.

Muhammad’s meccan period

610 - 622• Most converts were from his family,

household, and the poor.• Meccan revelations are benign• Persecution by the Quraysh• Some followers emigrate to Abbysinnia• Khadija and Abu Talib die (619 A.D.)• Marries 2nd wife: Aisha – age 6• The “Hijrah”– relocation to Medina (622)

Life in medina 622-632

• Problems with 3 Jewish tribes

• Caravan raiding begins

• Changing tenor of revelations

• Many battles are fought

• 10 year Treaty of Hudaybiyyah broken

• Raises an army of over 10,000

• Conquers Mecca (630)

The call to jihad• Muslims must make war against unbelievers.

(9:73, 9:29)• Jihad is obligatory for all Muslims (47:4, 9:81,

9:48-49, 2:193, 9:38-39, 2:216)• All must obey Allah and his Messenger (3:32)• Unbelievers invited to accept Islam (3:64)• Victory promised against superior forces

(8:65, 3:13)• If Muslims not victorious it is because they

have failed to follow Islam (3:149-151)

The suras of medina• Principle of Abrogation introduced (2:106,

16:101)• Take not Christians or Jews as friends(9:5, 5:51)• Banditry authorized (48: 18-20)• Holding captives for ransom OK (8:67-69)• Striking terror is prescribed (8:60)• Unbelievers are to be slain (47:4)• Apostates are to be maimed or slain (5:33)

The rewards of jihad• Warriors promised 4/5 of spoils (8:41)

• Captives may be killed, taken as slaves or held for ransom (8:67-69)

• Sex with female captives permitted (4:24)

• Killing or being killed in jihad pleases Allah and assures one admittance to paradise (4:100)…(much more in the hadith)

Islam’s paradise• Allah will reward those he chooses (17:30)• Perpetual virgins waiting to be wed (78:31,

55:56, 56:28)• Rivers of wine, milk, honey (47:15, 37:47-48)• Verdant gardens, luscious fruits (43:71`-73,

76:13-14)• Luxurious furnishings (88 :16)• Descriptions in the hadith are even more

“lurid” and “enticing”…

• Women are inferior to men (4:34)• Woman’s testimony half as valuable as a man’s (2:282)• Wives can be beaten (4:34)• Man can marry 4 wives (4:3)…and have concubines• No such thing as spousal rape (2:223)• Women who claim rape must produce 4 male witnesses

to the act (24:13)• Female inheritance is only half of a male’s (4:11)• Women must be covered in public (24:31)
