The Need The need for learning and certification of knowledge andpractical skills in metrology has been recognized byprofessional organizations such as the CoordinateMetrology Society (CMS) and major industrial end users. The link between the fundamental core principles, coretechnological measuring equipment and the development ofhigher educational standards is key for the future for anyprofessional development in metrology

The Importance The importance of formally recognising training and
education in metrology is key. The UK’s national standards organization, the National
Physical Laboratory (NPL) and Coventry University have been involved in setting the standard within dimensional metrology and beyond.
The process includes exploring the fundamentals of metrology at the user level and developing students to start questioning and planning in a positive manner through to the analytical mindset required at foundation degree level.

The Understanding Organisations measure what they make but many have a
limited understanding of their measurement process, their capability and value to their organisation
It is important to fill the specific gaps in skills and provide an understanding and application of measurment
Foundation degrees are vocational qualifications which have been specifically developed through consultation with employers to ensure that the learning and skills required are those of the employers needs.

BenefitsBusiness Improved company performance, productivity and
innovation Developing, up-skilling staff and improving retention Fewer errors and increased productivity. Reduction in the requirement for technical support. Lower scrap and re-work levels. Improved quality control, accuracy and repeatability. Behavioural changes - decision-making, questioning
and planning culture.

Metrology Learning OutcomesTargeted learning outcomes include instilling the followingbehaviours and attitudes in learners: A questioning culture. A planning mentality. A strategic approach to measurement and calibration. A responsible attitude towards measurement and
calibration. An accomplished, sound and practical understanding for
the day-to-day application of metrology in the work place.

Basics of Metrology
‘When you can measure what you are speaking about, and express it in numbers, you know something about it; but when you cannot measure it, when you cannot express it in numbers, your knowledge of it is of a meagre and unsatisfactory kind….

The metrologists responsibilities – the who
Essentials of good measurement – the how

Good Measurement Practice
The Right Measurement: Measurements should only be made to satisfy agreed and well-specified requirements
The Right Tools: Measurement should only be made using equipment and methods that have been demonstrated to be fit for purpose
The Right People: Measurement staff should be competent, properly qualified and well informed
You created this PDF from an application that is not licensed to print to novaPDF printer (http://www.novapdf.com)
Regular Review: There should be both internal and independent assessment of the technical performance of all measurement facilities and procedure
Demonstrable Consistency: Measurements made in one location should be consistent with those made elsewhere
The Right Procedures: Well-defined procedures consistent with national or international standards should be in place for all measurements

Some Metrology Objectives To measure capability and align with National and
International Standards
To work to realistic objectives, maintain documentation and traceability
A good metrologist should be able to identify, plan, measure quantify and then communicate findings in a coherent way
