JOSHUA 1:5b-9 (NRSV)
5b As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will not fail you or forsake
you. 6 Be strong and courageous; for you shall put this people in possession
of the land that I swore to their ancestors to give them. 7 Only be strong andvery courageous, being careful to act in accordance with all the law that my
servant Moses commanded you; do not turn from it to the right hand or to the
left, so that you may be successful wherever you go. 8 This book of the law
shall not depart out of your mouth; you shall meditate on it day and night, so
that you may be careful to act in accordance with all that is written in it. For
then you shall make your way prosperous, and then you shall be successful. 9
I hereby command you: Be strong and courageous; do not be frightened or
dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go."

A GIANT WALKS AMONG US!
Be sure to start off African AmericanHeritage Month here in the sanctuaryof Trinity Church on the first Sunday ofFebruary 5th. Start the month off by being fedby the words of a giant!
Dr. Asa Hilliard is a giant who walksamong us. Come and experience a
giant who walks among us. Dr. Hilliardsteachings have shaped the course ofAfrican American studies and AfricanaStudies for over a quarter of a century.Dr. Hilliard will be here in the sanctuary ofTrinity Church once again on the first Sundayat 2:30 in the afternoon.
You are encouraged to be here andyou are encouraged to make sure that mem-bers of your family come to sit in the pres-ence of a giant who will lecture tous once again on aspects of our history and
heritage that we need to pass on to our chil-dren. (Bring your children!)Our children know about 50 Cent.
Our children know about Usher. Ourchildren know about Mary J. Blige. Our chil-dren sing the words of Kanye West. Our children needto know the wisdom of AsaHilliard.
Our children love Mariah Carey. Ourchildren keep Jamie Foxx at the top ofthe charts. Our children need to know themind of a giant such as Dr. Asa Hilliard.
February 5th is a first Sunday. Theafternoon African Heritage Month presenta-tion will be out in time for our BaptismalService which starts at 5:00 p.m.You are encouraged to have your children atBaptismal Service also in order that they may
P A S T O R S P A G Eparticipate in one of the two sacraments of theProtestant church. That sacrament, too, is apart of our heritage as African Christians!

Dissing The Black Community!
The disrespect stops here! ClearChannel has a long history of disrespectingthe Black community. I tried to tell the con-gregation that several years ago when ClearChannel started the Black Unity fests in theparks. Nobody would listen. They couldnthearme.
Clear Channel was coming into thiscommunity (in the city of Chicago) and Clear
Channel was going into all of the major mar-kets in other cities where there was a largenumber of African American citizens and theywere hosting what is called Black Unityfestivals.
Clear Channel was bringing in tothose cities groups of big-name entertainerslike Earth, Wind and Fire and attractingBlacks by the thousands to their BlackUnity festivals.
What I tried to get the congregation tosee (and they couldnt hearme) was that
Clear Channel was saying to those big-namestars, if you dont appear at our Black Unityfestival you will get no air time on any of theClear Channel stations. Please remember!Clear Channel owns over 1200 stations. In

on Sunday mornings while he pushes his ownmotivational speaking shows, performances andrip-offs.
Clear Channel fired Cliff Kelley andput in his place some doped-up pablum todull the senses of the African American com-munity in the face of the upcoming electionsand in preparing for the statewide elections in2006 and 2008. The owners of Clear Channel
dont want the Black community to hear thethings that Cliff Kelley has to say in an electionyear. So they fired him.
That injustice is an injustice we willnot tolerate. The African American communityin the city of Chicago and in Cook County is
joining the National Coalition for Media Justiceand is demanding that Cliff Kelley be put backon a Clear Channel station on FM band toreach the widest possible audience.
With this injustice having been done toCliff Kelley, we are saying to Clear Channel,
The injustice stops here! We are saying toClear Channel, The disrespect stops here.We are saying to Clear Channel, The AfricanAmerican community in Chicago will not belulled to sleep by your Uncle Toms or with
your smooth shenanigans.I say to you and ask you, my beloved,
in the words of the cell phone commercial,Can you hear me now?
Pastor Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr.Please flood
PASTORS PAGEthis city alone, Clear Channel owns WNUA,WGCI, WGRB and V-103.
With that kind of threat hanging overtheir heads, big-name stars were coming intothe city and duped Blacks were flocking outto hear them. We spent our dollars with ven-dors and merchants who talked BlackUnity, but those vendors and merchants hadto pay the sponsors, Clear Channel, for selling
their wares. We believed we were supportingsomething black and I kept telling the congre-gation we were being duped. The congrega-tion couldnt hearme, so they kept on goingto the free concerts and spending big buckson the frills. All of the big bucks, however, were being taken back to Arlington, Texas, where the owners of Clear Channel (personalfriends of the Bush family) were spending ourmoney and laughing all the way to theirbank!
I tried to tell the congregation that
and you couldnt hearme. You werent tryingto hearme. Earth Wind and Fire was moreimportant than the racists ripping you off sothat you could enjoy the music. That was theend of it, as far as many African Americans inChicago were concerned.
Let me tell you some more aboutClear Channel. Clear Channel has been upsetwith Cliff Kelley for a long time. Cliff Kelleytalks about the illegal war in Iraq.
Cliff Kelley talks about the policies ofthe Bush administration that are hurting
Blacks and other minorities. Cliff Kelley tellsthe truth and the owners of Clear Channeldont want the truth. They would prefer anentertainment venue and a motivationalspeaker to lull the Black community to sleep

Two Trinitarians In The News
A Young Trinitarian, Solomon DumasOne of our high schoolers joined the
church last year and became a member of theHigh School Dance Ministry. His name isSolomon Dumas. Solomon has been "miss-ing" from church services for the past fewmonths because he is completing his finalyear at the Chicago Academy of the Arts, andthey have a "mandatory performance sched-ule" which conflicts with his Sunday worshiptimes.
Solomon has missed services, but he hasnot missed some tremendous opportunities.Solomon was selected to dance in the "BlackNativity," which was held at the GoodmanTheatre this past holiday season.
Last week, Solomon was selected todance for the Stellar Awards, accompanyingDonald Lawrence! We praise God for theway in which God is using this young man'stalents to get the glory for God's self!
An Older Trinitarian, Rev. Clyde WhiteReverend Clyde A. White who was
the Senior Vice President of faith-basedbanking for the ShoreBank Corporation, wasalso the president of the ShoreBank Chathambranch. After 25 years of working for
PASTORS PAGEShoreBank, Reverend White has retired.
Rev. White turned the nations num-ber one community-conscious bank into afaith-based operating practice ten years agoand was responsible for the launching andoperating of an entirely unique line of busi-ness for ShoreBank. Since Reverend Whiteperceived of the faith-based banking depart-ment, he and his team built an amazing port-
folio.ShoreBank now has more than seven
hundred faith-based organizations ascustomers with fifteen hundred accounts andmore than $40 million dollars in deposits! Inaddition, because of Pastor Whites ingenuity,ShoreBank has loaned more than $150 milliondollars to faith-based organizations inChicago and in the surrounding suburbs.
Clyde White has proven that faith-based banking helps to build stronger andhealthier communities. Many business people,
twenty-five years ago, did not think that waspossible in the Black community. ClydeWhite has shown that it is possible!
Upon retirement from ShoreBankCorporation, Clyde has accepted theresponsibility of forming a new Faith-BasedBanking Advisory Council. He has beennamed chairperson of that council.
As chairperson of this advisory coun-cil, Reverend White will continue to build andmaintain ShoreBanks relationship with thereligious community, not only here in
Chicago but throughout the nation! Please be sure to give Reverend
Clyde a big hug today and please let himknow how much you have appreciated hishard work in taking Christian principles into
Please flood the e-mail and fax of ClearChannels Earl Jones and let him know that wedemand Cliff Kelleys return to an FM station
by February 1st. Mr. Joness e-mail address is:earljones@clearchannel.com. His fax number

Pastors Book of the Month
I am going back, my beloved brothersand sisters, to recommending one book byand/or about African Americans to be read bythe members of this church each month of thisyear. I am asking every member to pick up acopy of Gayraud Wilmores Black Religionand Black Radicalismif you have not alreadyread it.
Read that book this month and learnabout your people. Read (for the month ofFebruary) Dr. Julia Spellers walkin the talk.
That gives you a preview of what we will bedoing next month.
On the first Sunday of this year I chal-lenged the members of our church to read abook a month at least one book each month so that they could learn something about theirown history, their own culture, their own peo-ple and the journey on which we have been (theway over which God has brought us!).
Gayraud Wilmores book is an excel-lent place to start. Get your copy today.

Ecumenical Advocacy Daysfor Global Peace with Justice
"CHALLENGING DISPARITY:THE PROMISE OF GOD -
THE POWER OF SOLIDARITY"March 10-13, 2006 in Washington, D.C.The time has come for a new vision of
U.S. public policy! On March 10, 2006, over800 faithful Christians will gather inWashington, D.C. to challenge the shockingeconomic and social disparities endured by toomany of our sisters and brothers. The tragicnatural disasters of the past year have demon-strated that individual generosity mustgo hand-in-hand with a vigorous governmentcommitment to the common good.
Biblical faith leads us to a comprehen-sive understanding of moral values in publicpolicy. Jesus Christ, Prince of Peace and advo-cate for the vulnerable, inspires us to act in sol-idarity. Participants will examine U.S. policy, worship together and network with other justiceadvocates. The event, sponsored annually bythe United Church of Christ, the ChristianChurch Disciples of Christ and many otherProtestant and Catholic organizations, will cul-minate in a massive lobbying effort on CapitolHill on March 13, 2006.

sites for the series. They are:www.pbs.org/slavery http://www.pbs.org/slav-

In a day where racial profiling is rampant, it is important for us to know what can and cannot bedone if stopped by the police. Below, I will offer a few helpful hints that should guide us as wego.
WHAT IF THE POLICE QUESTION YOU?
You have the right to remain silent. This is a constitutional right. Even if police ask you
questions, you cannot be arrested for refusing to answer them. If you are stopped on thestreet, you cannot be arrested for refusing to identify yourself. This would be akin toApartheid South Africa with the demand for pass books.
You have the right to ask if you are free to go. If the police say that you are not free to go, butyou are not under arrest either, then you are being detained. While being detained, thepolice may pat down the outside of your clothing, but you still do not have to answerquestions.
You have the right to talk to an attorney before you answer any questions. If you do not have anattorney, you may indicate to the officer that you want to speak to a lawyer beforeanswering questions. Public defenders are responsible for representing people who cannotafford an attorney in the Cook County and the Federal systems.
Remember, as much as is possible, stay calm, and do not bad mouth the police in any way, even
if you believe what is happening is unjust. Such actions may lead them to find reasons toarrest you.
Please remember that not all police are bad, but some will pervert justice, and not follow the rules. However, it is important that you be educated as to what they are supposed and not supposed todo. Please tear this page out of the bulletin and share it with your children and loved ones.

The Results Of A Redeemed Life
I NEVER PLEDGE
I never sign a pledge of any kind, said a man whom I was soliciting. Are you sure? I
asked. Yes, he replied.
Do you own your home? I questioned. Yes, but it is mortgaged for half its value.
Did you promise to pay interest on your mortgage? Yes.
When your telephone was installed, did you agree to pay monthly charges? Yes. What
are you driving at?
As a matter of fact, I answered, Have you not committed the larger portion of your
income to everything your home needs, except the church?
I surrender, he said.
