EXAMPLEYou are reading an article about a court case

written by a reporter named Larry Johnson. He is talking about why the lawyer, John Smith,

thinks that the man is guilty of his crime.

Author: Larry JohnsonLawyer: John Smith

CONCRETE DETAIL WITH QUOTES Never simply drop a quote into a paragraph:

“The man is guilty due to the fact that the police found the knife in his car” (Johnson).

USE TRANSITIONS! WRITE THESE IN YOUR OUTLINE. Person you are quoting name + Verb

John Smith suggests… John Smith argues… John Smith compares… John Smith demonstrates… John Smith points out that…

INCLUDE A TRANSITION John Smith argues that “the man is guilty due

to the fact that the police found the knife in his car” (Johnson).

TELL US WHO YOU ARE QUOTING… Why are they important? Are they qualified?

This tells us why we should listen to them Fill in the blank:

PARAPHRASING Definition:

Restate what the author says in your own words. No quotation marks are necessary

You must still cite the source

Paraphrase:The lawyer in this case claims that this man is guilty (Johnson).

NO… Do not put the person who is talking in the

quotes:

John Smith, the lawyer in the case, argues that “the man is guilty due to the fact that the police found the knife in his car” (Smith).

IN TEXT CITATIONS In-Text Citations tell the reader where you got

the information. It gives the author credit!

Don’t use I/Me/We/Our

EXAMPLE: John Smith, the lawyer in the case, argues

Example commentary: There is no other reason that man should

have had a knife in his car. If he did have a reason about why the knife

was in his car, he should have explained it to the jury.

PRACTICE Look at your outline.
