Meet and Greet
Sunday, June 9th
Meet and greet with our friends from our partner church, The Good News Church in Moscow, who will be working with our Vacation Bible School. This gathering will take place as an Adult Sunday School Class in 303 A & B. Our guests will be Olga Checkalina, Andrew Checkalin, Anna Grishina, Evgeniy Petrivich, and Luba Smagina. Olga and Andrew are the daughter and son of Misha Checkalin, pastor of The Good News Church. Olga was with us in 2008 and Andrew went with our youth to Triennium in 2010. Anna also attend‐ed Triennium in 2010. Evgeniy has directed Summer Camps for the church on numerous occasions. He directed the camps staffed by church members in 2007 and 2009. Sun‐day, June 16th, they will share their puppet ministry with us.
A Special Anniversary Sunday, June 2nd, was a busy day at First Presbyterian Church. We marked the graduation of eleven high school and four college students, we rejoiced in the baptism of a baby, we celebrated worship together and awaited, with anticipation, the start of Vacation Bible School and music camp. June 2nd also marked the fifth anniversary of a special staff member – that of our day school director, Robyn Moore.
Robyn is a native of New Jersey but moved to the south with her family about ten years ago. She has two children, a daughter, Ashley, and a son, Devon, (whose wedding day was also on June 2nd). But she is probably best known as the grand-mother of Aiden, a recent graduate of the Pre-K program who is loved by all who have encountered her outgoing and captivat-ing five-year-old personality.
One of the appealing qualities about Robyn’s back-ground that first enticed the search committee was her experience and training in Montessori curriculum. Therefore, an early goal of hers was to help bring a Montessori school to the Columbus area, but to do this in a way that would not lose sight of the traditional classes. Two years ago, the First Presbyterian Day School started one Montessori pre-school class. This past year, we added another one and this upcoming school year, we are on track to have a third Montessori classroom, to include kindergarten.
The classes are for children ages 3 – 6 years and the Montessori approach allows mixed-aged group classroom instruction which fosters independent learning and thinking
while encouraging children to grow and explore on their own level, wherever they happen to be, developmentally. This teach-ing method offers more independence and the environment is geared toward building self-confidence, exploration, and discov-ery. Robyn is proud of the teachers and students with whom she works and is always striving for excellence. You can see the evidence of this in our school here at First Presbyterian Church. Rev. Hasty commented that, “five years ago Robyn took over a very good day school program and she has turned it into an excel-lent day school program. Our Montessori classes, which Robyn brought to our program, set us apart from all other day schools in Columbus, Georgia. Robyn is an exceptional director and a blessing to her students and to our staff. I can’t wait to see what her next five years will bring.”
In her free time, Robyn enjoys reading, trips to the beach, and spending time with her family. But beware, she is an avid Auburn football fan and apparently bleeds orange and blue!
So please take time to speak to Robyn and thank her, not only for her five years of service, but for the wonderful work she is doing with the children and the day school. Thank you, Robyn, for a job very well done!
