Animals can’ t make their own food. They must eat other organisms to survive.

What are animals?

Vertebrates

Animals with

backbones

Fish

Fish have a backbone and are vertebrates.

They have gills and scales.Fish are cold-blooded and live in the

water.

Other Types of Fish

Click the smiley face to return to the list of vertebrates.

Reptiles

Reptiles have scales and they are cold blooded.

All reptiles have a backbone. Some species of reptiles lay eggs and

some give birth to live young.

Amphibians

Amphibians have backbones and are called vertebrates.Amphibians are also cold blooded. Most amphibians have smooth skin. Some amphibians lay eggs and some give birth to live young.

Birds

Birds are vertebrates because they have a backbone. All birds have feathers and they are warm blooded.

Bird bones are hollow, and most birds can fly.All birds lay eggs, though not all eggs are laid in a

nest.

Mammals

Mammals are vertebrates because they have a backbone.

Mollusks

Most Mollusks have a shell. They have an non segmented body.Mollusks usually need to live in water. They do not have a backbone, so they are called invertebrates.

These Are Also Mollusks

Click the smiley face to return to the list of invertebrates.

Segmented Worms

Segmented worms are divided into small sections. They are called invertebrates because they do not have a backbone.

More Segmented Worms

Arthropods

Another word for arthropod is insect. Some arthropods have a hard shell covering their bodies called an exoskeleton. Most have jointed legs and segmented bodies. They do not have backbones so they are called invertebrates.

These Are Other Arthropods

Click the smiley face to return to the list of invertebrates.

VertebratesVertebrates have a

backbone.Some examples are,

fish, birds, reptiles, and amphibians.

Invertebrates do not have a backbone.

Examples of invertebrates are mollusks, segmented worms, and arthropods.
