Pakistan’s Irrigation System is the largest contiguous gravity
Irrigation network in the world.
The reservoir capacity is highly inadequate - only 12 MAF out of
the 50 MAF flood flows is conserved in Tarbela and Mangla
Dams.
The irrigation system is over 100 years old with ageing
structures and inadequacies to meet the growing water needs. It
requires urgent improvements, modernization and development
for enhancing water resources.

The system was designed for 67% irrigation intensity which has become outmoded in the context of current agricultural development i e 122 %.Cholistan, Pachad Areas and Potohar comprising 12 million acres remain without irrigation.
Industrialization and urbanization is creating harmful and toxiceffluents which are flowing into rivers and canals and pollutingthe food chain.
The Punjab fresh water aquifer has dropped from 10 to 30 feet due to heavy pumping during the past 3 drought years.

Concept paper in process.
Hill Torrents effect the Piedmont areas, comprising over 475,000 acres, playing havoc with habitations in their path. A Pilot on Kaha Hill Torrent guided the Torrential flows into adjuring areas providing precious water for cropping which raised agriculture activity from 6000 acres to 75000 acres while saving habitations from damages. It is planned to construct 13 such Diversionary Structure on Hill Torrents in D.G.Khan, Rajanpur & Mianwali Districts providing irrigation to 475,000 acres and preventing destruction.

Flood channels operating for 100 days provide irrigation for Summer Crop. Lack of irrigation water for remaining period of year precludes further cropping. Shortages lead to mass migration & poverty. It is planned to construct 375 Village Reservoirs in Cholistan to bring prosperity and stability to the area.

Small Dams shall collect run off for sustained irrigation and water supply. Experience of existing Small Dams shows marked improvement in social & economic parameters. It is planned to construct 30 Small Dams, 100 Linked Dams and 200 Village Reservoirs in Potohar.
