Language Arts

Our language Arts program is comprised of three parts: Writing Workshop, Reading Workshop, and Word Study (Spelling).

Writing Workshop

•Students write in a variety of formats, including creative, expository, and letter writing. They generate their own leads and also learn to write from a prompt.

•Students conference and edit with peers, adults, and teachers.

•Mini-lessons will focus on improving writing through grammar, voice, and other conventions in the context of students’ writing.

Students will maintain a writing portfolio to show their growth throughout the year.

Spelling

Initially a Developmental Spelling Analysis is administered to determine each student’s stage of learning a Word Study. Groups are then established based upon the results of the analysis for appropriate instruction.

Each week’s spelling list will focus on given word patterns, for example:

Long Vowel Patterns: a,e,i,o,and u

Spelling Activities•Students will complete activities that will allow them to build word study skills.

•www.Puzzlemaker.com and wwwFunbrain.com are two sites that we use for spelling puzzles.

•Tests are given on Fridays.

Reading

In our reading program, we will be using novels, short stories, library books, and magazines in order to read fiction and non-fiction.

ReadingComprehension Strategies:

-Making Connections -Synthesizing-Visualizing -Questioning-Determining Importance-Inferring

Students will focus on a variety of literature genres, including:

- Myths/Tall Tales- Biographies- Fantasy/Science Fiction- Poetry

Enrichment Reading/LA

All children will be provided with a variety of enrichment activities within curriculum.

For example: The Irish and Chinese contributions to the building of the Trans-Continental Rail Road.

Reading in Social Studies as a Literacy Model

Historical Topics

Students will read historical fiction and informational text which support our Social Studies curriculum.

Books: Jayhawker, Bound for Oregon, Across the Wide and Lonesome Prairie etc.

Homework Policy

• All homework is to be attempted.

• Homework should be neat and legible.

• All work is to be shown when possible

• All Math work is to be done in Pencil

• All tests and quizzes should be signed and returned

• Every 20 homeworks will be awarded with:

•Example question: Larry, Curly, and Moe decided to race up the stairs that have 24 steps.
