Welcome Wellness Champions!September 23, 2016
A Wellness Champion is a staff member with a commitment to
health that serves as an ambassador for student and staff wellness initiatives and activities.
The Wellness Champion is primarily responsible for working
with the Healthy School Team and enthusiastically promoting
wellness programs and participation to students and
staff.
Thank you for being a Wellness Champion!
• With more than 1.5 million people being diagnosed with cancer and 26
million people diagnosed with diabetes in the United States each year
there is an urgent need for a new direction in battling diseases. The Food
for Life program is an innovative approach to a medical challenge. It aims
first to prevent disease. When a disease has been diagnosed, it works
for improving survival.

Food for Life: The Power of Food for Health
The goal of the Food for Life Cooking Classes is to teach people to choose, prepare, and eat, nutritionally sound and healthy foods that will help them to attain or maintain a healthy weight as well as prevent and treat certain diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and other chronic illnesses.
Food for Life Cooking Classes were developed by a team of physicians, registered dietitians, nurses, and other health professionals at the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) as a way to translate the data from the latest research in nutrition and help people put it into practical use.
Food For Life Classes, Trish Reynaert
• Research has shown that more than one-third of all cancer deaths in the United States are due to poor diet, yet most are unaware of the connection.
• More than four decades ago, the
United States declared a “war on cancer,”
yet current statistics predict that during
our lifetime, one in two men and
one in three women will
develop cancer.
• Dr. Neal Barnard, President of the Cancer Project.
Why The Food For Life Program?
• A lifestyle enrichment program designed to reduce disease risk factors through the adoption of better health habits and appropriate lifestyle modifications. The goal is to lower blood cholesterol, hypertension, and blood sugar levels and reduce excess weight. This is done by improving dietary choices, enhancing daily exercise, increasing support systems and decreasing stress, thus aiding in preventing and reversing disease.
• CHIP is based on the fact that 75% or more of our Western diseases are “lifestyle-related,” according to the U.S. Surgeon General[1].

• Collier Greens is Naples Botanical Garden’s support program for schools, communities, and worksites that want to start gardens or sustain existing gardens. This free program provides mentoring to gardeners, offers regular workshops that span topics as diverse as organic gardening and fundraising, assists with garden supplies, encourages networking with other garden educators, and much more. One need not have a garden to participate!
• Collier Greens also offers an EarthBox Lending Library in which schools and worksites can “check out” EarthBoxes to grow in during the school year. An EarthBox is a self-watering planting container and is a great way to get started with gardening.
