What is Bullying?

Bullying is: ‘Behaviour by an individual or group,

usually repeated over time, that intentionally hurts another individual or group either physically or emotionally’

(“Preventing and Tackling Bullying” Government Guidance 2012)

Direct Bullying• Direct bullying is

when the bullying is done directly to the target – he or she might be pushed, hit, tripped, called names, have things taken, have signs made at them etc.

Indirect Bullying

• Indirect bullying is the bullying that happens behind someone’s back – spreading rumours, whispering, making signs to each other, stealing or damaging things without the person knowing who is doing it and so on, excluding someone indirectly, for example making up excuses why they can’t come rather than telling them directly.

Bullying or falling out with friends?

• Friends have disagreements and arguments• Friends sometimes say mean words to each other and hurt each other accidentally. • Friends may feel angry at each other for a short time. • It is usually a one off incident and not bullying.
