TheSanDiegoStateUniversitywindtunnelwasdesignedandconstructedbyKenneyEngineeringCorporationandputintooperationin1963.Duringrecentyears,severalmodificationswereintroducedintotheairpumping,tunnelcontrol,andinstrumentationequipmenttokeepupwithcurrenttechnology.TheairpumpingsystemconsistsofaLeRoi/DresserModel256S2C2‐stageaircompressordrivenbya125hpmotor.Thecompressorcanpumpthestoragesystemupto250psig.Adryingandfilteringsystemisprovidedwhichincludesbothdryingbycoolinganddryingbyabsorption.Airstoragesystemconsistsofasingle5,000galltank.TunnelcontrolsystemincludesaToshibaEC321ProcessLoopControllerandaquickopening,pneumaticallyactuatedbutterflyvalve.

Thesettlingchambercontainsseveraldampingscreens,andprobesmeasuringstagnationpressureandtemperature.Thenozzlechamberisdesignedwithinterchangeable,two‐dimensionalcontourednozzleblocksmadeofcastaluminum.ThetunnelisequippedwithfourcompletenozzleblocksetsfortheMachnumbers1.0,2.0,3.0,and4.5.Recentlywe’vedevelopedaperforatedwalltestsectionfortransonicflowmeasurements.Thetestsectionofthetunnel,whichmeasures6”x6”x10”,isequippedwitharemotelycontrolledmodelsupportforcontrollingtheangleofattack.Themodelholdermovesinapuretranslationintheverticaldirectionasthecontrolstrutismovedupanddown.Themaximumangleofattackisabout+/‐25degrees.Afterpassingthroughadiffuser,theairflowisdischargedintotheatmospheretroughamufflerandthenexhaustedtotheoutsideofthebuilding.Testruntimesdepend,ofcourse,onMachnumberandthestagnationpressure.Approximatetimesareshownintheablebelow:
