Objectives

Develop an Analog Optical Link for the AB/RF Group

Develop a Digital Optical Link Develop the links and leave them ready

for the test beam Help to install the links and crates in the

PCR and experiments

Timeframe Forecast

Definitive Version

Timeframe Followed

Definitive Version

Analog Link (Requirements) Use the AB/RF Miteq Lasers/Photodiodes Capability of Monitoring Photodiode and Laser Pluggable in standard crates/racks

VME interface Heat Sink required Firmware development in Visual Elite… … Using the VME code provided by AB/RF

Analog Link (Miteq Characterization) Tests done in collaboration with AB/RF Group… …Over two test board with temperature sensors

Tests:

Temperature Vs Gain tests were developed in a climatic chamber

Bandwidth Phase noise @400, 40 and 10 (MHz)

Analog Link (Test's Results) From Temperature test were known:

Heat sink + air flow Ideal conditions @ 25-30Deg (~8dB gain)

Air flow or heat sink extreme work conditions@40-50Deg (~1dB lost@)

No heat sink / No airflow Laser and photodiode break down >60Deg

From bandwidth test were known: Bandwidth from 30KHz to 3GHz There is an Internal AGC The output signal is inverted.

Analog Link (Test's Results) From Phase Noise tests were obtained:

(Table) Low noise but higher than the old Miteq used Noise contain high 50Hz Component. (eliminating

this component the noise values are reduced around 50%)

Analog Link (The Prototype Boards)

Digital Link (Requirements) Same architecture as Analog Same or close to analog performance Increase monitoring capability

Frequency Detection Power Monitoring & Signal detection Laser Enable / Disable

No Heat Sink Firmware development in Visual Elite… … Using the VME code provided by AB/RF

Digital Link (Lasers) 3 Digital Lasers were tested (and compared with the analog)

OCP STX 03 (155MHz) OCP STX 24 (1.2GHz) PHOTON MT5 343 ( obsolete 155MHz )

As Results: OCP 24 Better skew and s2s from low freq. to 40MHz OCP 03 Better for skew@400MHz (out of range)

Digital Link (Photodiodes) Digital photodiode were tested

OCP SRX 03 (155MHz) OCP SRX 24 (1.2GHz) TRUELIGHT TRR (155MHz) OKI OF363B-C3 LDI LPA 1000PT-D & LDI LPA 1000PT-D v2 JDSU EDR515D

As Results: OCP 24: Better for 400 and 10 MHz Truelight: Better for 40MHz and pulse reception

Digital Link (Prototype Boards)

Software A few interface were written to control The

boards: VME Monitor for Windows and Linux in C/C++ Read Monitor (Tcl/Tk): Generic Reader Write Monitor (Tcl/Tk): Generic Writer ReadRXD: Control Rx_D board ReadTXD: Control Tx_D board ReadRFA: Control RF_RX/TX_A boards Scan: Detect the RF boards in a crate

Software (Screenshots)

Test Beam and Link Validation Link tested in lab: Digital and analog links works in similar

way and better than the old TTC system

In the Test Beam (Sep 2006), in a real scenario, the Analog works more stably than the digital and the old TTC system (TTCRD12 & TTCmi)

Pricing

The Digital Link is 4 times cheaper than the Analog link

Board Board Price Price per channel (Rx+Tx)

10 RF_RX_A 8.776.- 10.052.-

10 RF_TX_A 11.328.-

10 RF_RX_D 3.305.- 2.400.- (mixed conf: 2TRR + OCP24)10 RF_TX_D 3.904.-

Review - Conclusions All the prototype boards and software developed

are working and have been validated by the ESS/TTC and by the AB/RF group

The digital boards need some changes that will improve their performance (changes that will be done for production)

Acknowledgments Too many people to say thanks.. Specially to:

Sophie Baron to help me in the project and choose me between the “thousands” of applications…

Christopher Parkman and Mike Clayton: to let me work in their group and “tolerate” my network problems

AB/RF group in specially to Philippe Baudrenghien to show me the Analog side of the things

And to all the ESS Group to accept me like one more in the group

Bibliography (Docs Writen) Boards user manuals

3 User manuals were written• RF_A (RF_RX/TX_A boards)• RF_RX_D Board• RF_TX_D Board

Programming user manual 5 Software manual were written

• Generic Readers• Specific TCL/TK applications for each board

Lasers and photodiode evaluation report Publication with Sophie Baron in the book of the workshop’s

conference
