This slide deck focuses on the advantages of using Word styles to format documents efficiently, including how to apply, modify and create them, and the additional benefits they confer for editing and production. There are also tips for making styles easier to work with, making the styles list more manageable and some reasons why styles sometimes misbehave.

What is a paragraph style?

defines appearance of a paragraph style properties include– font, point size– line spacing, space above & below– justification, hyphenation–widow & orphan control– language (dictionary spellchecker uses)

marked with ¶ in Styles task pane

What is a character style?

applies formatting to part of a paragraph– e.g. an italic word, a superscript

number marked with ‘a’ in Styles task pane

Where are styles stored?

in a Word template or document every document is based on a

template– default template is Normal

Normal template has many built-in styles– built-in styles can’t be deleted

how do I create a template?– save the document as a template

how do I check which template the document is using?– open the Templates & Add-Ins box

bulleted lists XML tags do the same job styles and tags are in effect
