What will co-working space belike in the future? Perhaps in morediverse forms, modified from super⁃markets or bookstores. Recently,Yangpu issued the "Shanghai YangpuDistrict Co-working Spaces Devel⁃opment White Paper (2016)" (herein⁃after referred to as "White Paper")and "Shanghai Yangpu DistrictCo-working Spaces DevelopmentIndex Report (2016)" (hereinafter re⁃ferred to as "Index Report").

Co-working spaces refer to allnew types of start-up service plat⁃forms, and it is an upgraded versionof hi-tech business incubators. As animportant new force in the scienceand technology service industry,co-working space in Yangpu hasseen a booming growth in recentyears.

According to the White Paper, asof the end of 2016, there were morethan 60 co-working spaces (not in⁃cluding conventional incubators andhi-tech parks) in Yangpu, covering atotal area of ??93,000 square meters

based by 1,638 start-up teams underincubation, and over 3,000 enterpris⁃es had been supported in thosespaces. In 2016, the spaces received atotal investment of 1.488 billion yuan,and assisted the development of alarge number of high-tech enter⁃prises including Grand Horizon, Av⁃con and Ruking.

The White Paper found thatco-working spaces in Yangpu ac⁃counts for 12% of those in Shanghaias a whole, gathering renownedco-working spaces including Sino⁃vation Ventures, TusStar, TencentPublic Space, China TelecomCo-working Space, Urwork, Krspaceand Juzi Lab.

Looking at results, the survivalrate of start-up enterprises in Yangpuare as high as 31.4% , and even60% -70% in some co-working spac⁃es, which is much higher than thenational average. This outstandingperformance was due to thehigh-quality service provided byco-working spaces in Yangpu.

What is amazing is that morethan half of co-working spaces in

Yangpu are supported by large en⁃terprises as a platform, which ishigher than the city and the nationalaverage, such as Antsplan, an on⁃line-education provider supported byhujiang.com, and Tencent PublicSpace Flagship, which is supportedby Tencent.

As for start-up environment,Yangpu now features two majorstart-up systems: the DaxueRoad-KIC system, and the ChangYang Valley centered system. DaxueRoad, near the Wujiaochang locality,has become a livable start-up com⁃munity which is home to co-workingspaces (InnoSpace+, IPO.fm, Huach⁃uang Club, etc.), hi-tech parks,start-up companies and teams anduniversities. Livelihood, transporta⁃tion, entertainment and other facili⁃ties around this community havebeen significantly improved.

What will the co-working spac⁃es be like in the future? What are thefuture trends?

As the White Paper predicts,innovation and entrepreneurship willreach to more ordinary people with

lower entrance threshold, which notonly will bring opportunities, butalso bring more requirement toco-working spaces. One of thetrends, as the start-up environmentbecomes more encouraging and tol⁃erant, is that there will be morestart-up service providers that willconstitute a more complete industrychain. At the national level, a largenumber of co-working spaces willemerge, forming a start-up serviceindustry. At the same time, theforms of co-working spaces na⁃tionwide will be more diverse andvibrant, which will result in profes⁃sion-based and industry-basedco-working spaces, as well as thosemodified out of supermarkets andbookstores.

In the United States, WeWorkprovides service for start-up ownersas a co-working space, which alsowelcomes free-lancers. RocketSpace, except for supporting uni⁃corns, also provides service for in⁃novative project team like the R&Dteam in Boeing. A research carriedout by foreign scholars shows that by

2020, 40% of labor force in the U.S.will work without a boss, and theymay be freelancers or virtual em⁃ployees that belong to a companyonly nominally; those are potentialclients of co-working spaces in thefuture. White Paper further predictsthat the future clients of co-workingspaces will be more diversified.

That said, the White Paper alsopoints out that, after a vigorous de⁃velopment with the emergence of alarge number of co-working spaces,the co-working space industry willundergo a major restructuring withmany close-ups. As start-ups will bemore complicated and differentiated,individual co-working spaces maynot survive, thus entailing mergersand acquisitions and integrated in⁃dustry chains. In such an ecosystem,small and specialized co-workingspaces, incubators and featuredstart-up service resources will behighly concentrated. At the sametime, a number of market-oriented,professional, chain-brand co-work⁃ing spaces stand out and becomemodels in the industry.

Nearly half of the 0-6-year-oldchildren in Yangpu District are ex⁃posed to electronic screens for 0.5to 2 hours a day, and 15.8% morethan 2 hours. Only about one-thirdhave an exposure time of less thanhalf an hour.

A large-scale child health edu⁃cation campaign was held in Wujia⁃ochang kindergarten, where a sur⁃vey was released that shows thattelevisions, computers, tablets, mo⁃bile phones and other electronicproducts are inevitably engaged inthe growth of children, and act as"electronic nannies". WujiaochangCommunity Health Service Centeralso conducted a questionnaire sur⁃vey to parents of over a thousandchildren from 11 nursery institutionsin Yangpu.

"However upset my child is, he’ll be fine immediately when givena tablet." Said a young father, whowas agreed by many. When parentsare using their mobile phones, thechildren always come for it, andresort to crying when not givenone; the elderly keeps the TV on allthe time, and the children donothing but watch TV; parents donot have enough time for theirchildren, so they let tablets tellstories and teach speaking forthem. Those are very common inmost families.

However, the experts said thatexposure to electronic products invery young ages may not be allgood. According to Zhang Jinsong,Chief Physician of Child Healthcareand Clinical Psychology of Xin HuaHospital Affiliated to Shanghai JiaoTong University School of Medi⁃cine, he had encountered manyanxious parents with children to

come to treatment. "Loose atten⁃tion, social phobia, emotionalproblems, ADHD…many of theseproblems are the result of elec⁃tronic products caused by exces⁃sive exposure to electronics."Zhang Jinsong said.

The survey shows that althoughnearly 90% of parents are aware ofthe possible harm that electronicproducts may cause to children'shealth, most of them believe theharm is mainly on vision. ZhangJinsong pointed out that excessiveuse of electronic products not onlyaffect the development of children'svision, but also language skills, so⁃cial skills, attention, imagination,creativity, emotion and other as⁃pects of development. Experts sug⁃gest that children aged 0-2 shouldnot use electronic products, chil⁃dren with 2-6 years old should notbe exposed to them more than 1hour a day, with each session lessthan half an hour.

The survey also found thatmany Apps on mobile phones andtablets are well designed and in⁃teresting, and many parents like tolet them teach their children in⁃stead. Experts pointed out that thesoftware have advantages and dis⁃advantages. Shen Lixiao, ChiefPhysician of Child Healthcare ofXin Hua Hospital Affiliated toShanghai Jiao Tong UniversitySchool of Medicine, said, "Theprogram is designed by people, andeven the interaction is predeter⁃mined, which is actually passivelearning. The children’s language,social and other capacities are de⁃veloping very fast in this period,and they need initiative learning tointeract with the surrounding envi⁃ronment and their peers instead ofmachines.”

In addition to Seattle, Frank⁃furt and other famous gaming cen⁃ters, Shanghai, with a rapid devel⁃opment of the gaming industry andgamer engagement, is seeking tochallenge the current status ofSeoul, which has been running thee-sports industry for years, andcompeting with Moscow among thetop 3 gaming centers in all emerg⁃ing markets. Perfect World, agentof DOTA 2 in China, is located inYangpu and is working with thedistrict to build a world-classe-sports center.

Yangpu is home to 10 collegesand universities, and undergraduate

and graduate students account for20% and 30% of that in Shanghai re⁃spectively. Therefore, From R&Dand operations, to content produc⁃tion, and to content dissemination,Yangpu is the ideal place for thee-sports industry.

In the future, Yangpu will con⁃tinue to introduce bigger-scale,more influential e-sports games, soas to attract more attention andmore resources to Yangpu, and en⁃hance the status of Shanghai as aglobal gaming center. At the sametime, Yang Pu will also strive topromote more secondary events, andactively arrange the industrial chainof e-sports, forming a favorable en⁃vironment.
