ZebOS Management Plane Framework (ZebM) is a software framework that enables network device vendors to quickly and inexpensively deliver world-class management functionality for their products. ZebM’s data model-driven design philosophy provides automatic rendering of northbound interfaces (NETCONF, CLI, SNMP, REST and Web UI). It has been designed from the ground up to meet the primary need of providing a comprehensive solution which addresses all aspects relating to operations administration and maintenance of a networking element.

Network device vendors design data models describing configuration and state data applicable to their network device. ZebM renders the desired set of management interfaces from the vendor defined data models. ZebM- based approach to device management allows network equipment vendors faster time to market by significantly lowering the time and resources needed to develop comprehensive network management applications. In most traditional approaches to device management, the management interfaces connect directly to the Managed Objects (MOs). ZebM-based solution separates the concerns by providing management interfaces to the back-end system.

• Common software for multiple deployments and hardware: ZebM is designed using several inbuilt abstraction layers. These abstraction layers, allow the

software to run over multiple control plane CPU and forwarding chipset hardware. The system calls are also well abstracted allowing to switch across operating systems if required. It has been integrated with verified with multiple commodity hardware, which again allows transition easily.

• Interoperation and ease of use: ZebM solution is built using standards based definitions, as well as has popular vendor specific extensions. The operation and management is provided using CLI and SNMP. This allows the ZebM enabled device to be easily operate and interoperate in a heterogeneous vendor deployment network environments.

• Modular software design: ZebM software design is highly modular with multiple processes handing each individual key protocols. The processes are managed and contained by a process handler framework, which also monitors the processes, restarts and maintains event logging for them. ZebM can be built and packaged with minimal software features, reducing capex and device footprint.

• Support for disruptive networking technologies: ZebM supports next generation technologies like SDN and NFV. ZebM’s centralized transaction based modelling layer allows for service level provisioning and chaining.

ZebOS Management Plane (ZebM)ZebM provides a framework and APIs for building management systems for a switch or router. It offers two different sets of programmatic APIs, Transactional API also called CML API and Non transactional API (CLI Equivalent programmatic APIs) also called SMI API. The APIs can be easily integrated with any third party management application. Management of a third party southbound application can also be integrated with ZebM using its framework.

ZebM Framework provides a set of tools for automatically generating most of the backend code for the management APIs. This reduces the effort involved in programming the APIs. ZebM also supports configuration of Linux Based Host Protocols.

Simple Management Interface (SMI)SMI is a set of C Language APIs for managing ZebOS control plane switching and routing protocols. They are Non transactional APIs which are CLI Equivalent programmatic APIs.

ZebM ComponentsCentral Management Layer (CML)CML is a transaction oriented programmatic management interface for managing ZebOS resources. It follows Data Model driven management API. CML APIs allows a group of configuration operations to behave atomically. Data Model approach provides abstraction for managed physical or logical resources. It follows XML schema to describe a managed resource and its properties. CML Solution makes it feasible to deploy any kind of north bound management application for managing ZebOS control plane or any other south bound application.

Host Protocol Interface (HPI)ZebM Solution Provides CLI/SMI interface to configure most common Linux applications.

• Provides management plane access to remote SSH/Telnet client using local SSH/Telnet server

• Enables Authentication based on Linux Pluggable Authentication Module (PAM) framework by configuring the Radius, TACACS+, LDAP Configuration files

• Facilitates starting or stopping or configuring NTP Client, SNMP in Linux from ZebOS

provides configuration store (CML-DB) where entire ZebOS configuration is persisted. Transaction oriented management (ACID compliant) supports and APIs as a static/dynamic library to which a north bound management application is linked. Base CML will come with CLI support. Plugins are available via Professional services for NetCONF and other proprietary north bound application formats.
