Background

TheNationalInstitutesofHealth(NIH)awardedOMSIfundingduringthespringof2011tocreatea2,000sq.ft.bilingual(English/Spanish)travelingexhibitionexploringcurrentresearchonthehumanmicrobiomeandtheimpactofourresidentmicroorganismsonourhealth.TheexhibitionwasdevelopedwiththesupportoftheJ.CraigVenterInstituteandothernationalexpertsinmicrobiomeresearch.Moreinformationabouttheexhibitioncanbefoundathttp://omsi.edu/exhibitions/zoo-in-you/.ZooinYouProjectGoals1. Educatemuseumvisitorsandprogramparticipantsaboutwhatthehuman

microbiomeis,andengagetheircuriosityandcreativityabouttheirownuniqueandpersonalmicrobiomes.

2. Tobuildawarenessofcurrentresearchonthehumanmicrobiomeandtheimpactsofthemicrobiomeonourpersonalhealthanddisease.

DesignandMethodsAsummativeevaluationwasconductedtogatherinformationabouttheextenttowhichtheprojectwasachievingitsgoalsofengagingthepublicaroundthehumanmicrobiome,microbes,andtheresearchbeingdoneinthisarea.Amultiplemixedmethodsapproachwasusedtogatherinformationabouttheproject,including:1)ageneralvisitorstudywithvisitorstoZooinYouatOMSIinPortland,OregonandScienceWorksinAshland,Oregon(n=120);2)aFamilyScienceNightstudyfocusedonSpanish-speakingvisitors(n=43);and3)aScienceCaféstudyduringaneveningprogram(n=142).UtilizingdifferentapproachesandmethodswithdifferentaudiencesallowedforawiderunderstandingofhowtheZooinYouexhibitionwasreachingaudiencesatdifferentsitesandindifferentcircumstances.MainFindingsEngagementwiththeexhibition–TimespentinZooinYouvariedabitbyinstitution.MediantimespentatOMSIwas7minutes55seconds,whileitwasslightlylongeratScienceWorksat15minutes0seconds.VisitorsatScienceWorksonaveragestoppedattwomoreexhibitelements(8.3)comparedtoOMSIvisitors(6.0).Itislikelythatthebigsizedifferenceintheinstitutionsandpossiblylocationoftheexhibitionplayedapart:thereweremanymoreexhibitionstovisitatOMSIcomparedtoScienceWorks,andZooinYouwasmoresetoffinitsownspaceatScienceWorks.Therewere,however,quiteafewsimilaritiesinhowvisitorsengagedtheexhibition.Ofthetopfiveexhibitelements

engagedin,fourwerethesameacrossbothlocations:HandWashing,MarbleMaze,WeatherReport,andUndertheLens.Whenaskedwhichexhibitelementsworkedbestforthewholegroup,whichwasintergenerational,allofthetopfivespecificexhibitelementsmentionedwerethesameforbothlocations:HandWashing,DNAPuzzle,MarbleMaze,WeatherReport,andHowTiny.Thisshowsthattheintentionofdesigningexhibitionsthatcouldappealtovaryingaudiencesindifferentlocationshassomeconsistencyinwhatgroupsfindappealingandengaging.AwarenessandUnderstanding–Whenaskedwhattheylearnedfromtheexhibition,visitorsweremostlikelytoreferenceaspecificexhibitelementorexhibitionconcept,orthesizeandnumberofmicrobes.Somevisitorsdidtalkaboutthefactthatmicrobes/bacteria/virusescouldbebothgoodandbadforhumans,whereaspriortovisitingtheexhibitiontheyhadonlythoughttheycouldbebad.Anotheriteminquiredaboutthemainideaoftheexhibition,andthemostcommonresponseshadtodowithlearningaboutmicrobesingeneral,showinghowthehumanbodyworked,microbescanbegoodandbad,andhowtostayhealthy.Intermsofmentioningspecificexhibitionareasthatcommunicatedthemainmessages,visitorsatbothinstitutionsmentionedtheHandWashingandHowTinyexhibitelementsasgoodcommunicationtoolsofthemainideasoftheexhibition.VisitorssaidtheUndertheLens,WeatherReport,andMVPPuzzlealsodidagoodjobcommunicatingthemainmessages.TheScienceCaféeventwasheldindependentoftheexhibitionandwasmoreofapresentation;however,italsohadsuccessinengagingpeoplearoundthecontent.MorethanonequarterofparticipantsreferencedspecificinformationfromthepresentationwhenaskedwhattheylearnedduringtheScienceCaféevent,andalmostonefifthofparticipantssaidtheylearnedaboutthehumanmicrobiomeingeneral.TheTerm“HumanMicrobiome”–Theprojectteamwasinterestedintheextenttowhichvisitorstotheexhibitionwereawareofthespecificterm“humanmicrobiome”andwhatitmeantrelativetotheexhibitelementsandcontent.However,manyofthegeneralvisitorsatbothlocationssaidtheydidnotspecificallyrememberseeingthetermintheexhibition;thosewhodidsaytheysawitoftenhadatoughtimedescribingitaccuratelyandindetail.However,asmentionedabovemanyofthevisitorsgainedanunderstandingofthemainmessagesoftheexhibition:howthehumanbodyworks,whatmicrobesare,andthatmicrobescanbegoodandbad.Soanylackofnoticingorunderstandingthisspecifictermdidnotinterferewiththeoverallexhibitiongoals.BilingualNatureoftheExhibition–ForvisitorstoZooinYourecruitedduringregularvisitinghours,therewerenotverymanywhospokeSpanishonaregularbasis.Assuch,theydidnotneedtoengagewiththebilingualSpanish/Englishtext.Still,theoverwhelmingmajorityofvisitorstoZooinYousaidhavingabilingualexhibitionenhancedormadenodifferencetotheirexperience,whichisimportantgiventhatsomeinstitutionshaveexpressedconcernthatdoublingthetextwouldoverwhelmnon-Spanishspeakers.

FortheSpanish-speakinggroupsvisitingduringtheFamilyScienceNightevent,thebilingualtexthadalargepositiveimpactontheirvisittoZooinYou,mainlybecausemanymembersofthegroupneededSpanishtofullyexperiencetheexhibition.Thisallowedthemtoengageintheirnativetongue,knowwhattodoatthevariousexhibitelements,andmorefullyunderstandthecontentandlearnmore.AlmostthreequarterssaidthemuseumhavingtheexhibitioninSpanishchangedhowtheyfeltaboutOMSI.MorethanthreequarterssaidtheywerelikelytoreturntoOMSIatadifferenttime.

DiscussionThissectionisadiscussionofthemainfindings,theirsignificance,andsomediscussionofhowtheyrelatetofindingselsewhereinthefield.Thissectionseekstoaddcontexttothefindingsthemselves,aswellashowonemaythinkaboutthefindingsastheyrelatetoeachotherandthefieldingeneral.IntermsofengagementwiththeexhibitionthemostobviousdifferencewasthatstaytimewasdifferentatthetwoinstitutionswithvisitorsspendingmoretimeintheexhibitionatScienceWorks,thesmallerinstitution.Thisisacommontrendinthemuseumworld,wherevisitors’staytimeisdrivenbytryingtomaximizetheirtimebysplittingavisitupaccordingtowhatthereistoseeanddo.Thisapproachoftakingintoaccounthowmuchthereistodocandrivehowlongpeoplespendinaparticulararea,sinceiftheywantto“seeitall”thentheysplitupthetimebetweenthevariousexhibitions.Thelocationoftheexhibitionmayhavealsohadsomethingtodowithstaytime:atOMSI,ZooinYouwasonthesecondfloorandinalargerroomwithmorethanoneexhibitionalongsideit(i.e.,theNanotechexhibitionononesideandthePrenatalDisplayonanother).AtScienceWorksitwasinaseparateroomattheendofthemuseum,whereitwasinmoreofa“pocket”area,whereyouwalkedthroughoneexhibition,thenenteredaroomthatonlyhadZooinYouinit.Therefore,therewaslessflowinandoutoftheexhibitionatScienceWorksthanatOMSI.WiththelongerstaytimeitwasalsonotsurprisingthatpeopleengagedinacouplemoreexhibitelementsatScienceWorkscomparedtoOMSI.However,wecannotknowwhetherpeopleinthatlocationwenttomoreexhibitselementsbecausetheyspentmoretimeintheexhibition,whethertheyspentmoretimebecausetheywenttomoreexhibitselements,orwhethertheysawmoreelementsbecausetherewerefewertotalelementsinthemuseum.Oftentimes,weassumethatalongerstaytimeisbetter,anditiscertainlytruethatyoucandomoreifyoustaylonger,butthatdoesnotnecessarilymeanthatyouwillexperiencemoreexhibitelements.Thereseemstobeazerosumfactorintermsoftheamountoftimepeoplewillstay;ifyouaddmorecomponentsthenvisitorstendtobemoreselectiveaboutwhattheyvisit,theytendnottoaddtotheirtotalvisittimesimplybecausethereismoretosee.Theaveragetotalvisittimeforamuseumisaround2to3hours.Thereareexceptions,ofcourse,butRounds(1994)

talkedabouttheforagingbehaviorofvisitors(ratherthanseeingeverything)beingaveryeffectiveapproachbecausepeoplespendtimeengagingincomponentstheyfindinherentlyinteresting,andcanfocusonfewerexperiencesinmoredepth.Lookingatthetypesofelementsthatweremostengaging,thefactthatmanyofthesameexhibitelementswerethemostpopularatbothsitessuggeststhatthereisaninherentpatterninthekindsofelementsvisitorsfindengaginginZooinYou.Manyoftheelementshadcomponentsthatwerebothsimilaranduniqueatthesametime.Forexample,theHandWashingelementwasaboutsomethingwehopefullydoeveryday,yetpresentedtheuniquecontentabouttheamountofbacteriathatremaininavisualmannerthatwedon’tnormallysee.Thisexhibitcomponentalsoseemedtobepopularforparentsasameansofreinforcingsomethingtheyarefrequentlyaskingtheirchild(ren)todo.ApopularexhibitliketheMarbleMazehadahands-oncomponentofapinballmachinegamethatmanyarefamiliarwith,butwithcontentwasunique.Thekindsofexhibitsthatwerepopulartendedtobeonesthatwerehands-on,andeitherofferedfamiliarexperiencesorcontent(marbles,washinghands,puzzles)orofferedauniqueexperience(“doing”theweather,seeingrelativesizebymovingalever).Exhibitdesignersanddevelopershavebeenfocusedonfindingabalancebetweenapriorknowledgeandnewcontentforquitesometime,withthegoalofmakingitaworthwhileexperience.While7ofthe14exhibitelementsatOMSIhadastaytimeofaminuteorlonger,thiswastruefor9ofthe14elementsatScienceWorks.Astaytimeofaminutewouldallowforadecentamounttoengagewithanexperience.ForZooinYouitseemsthatifpeoplestoptheyaredecidingtospendarelativelydecentamountoftimeatthatexhibitelement;theyarenotjustbrowsingbutengaging.Giventimeconstraints,wewerenotabletoconducttrackingstudiesduringtheFamilyScienceNightStudy,butitwouldalsobeinterestingtoseewhetherthereweresimilarpatternsofbehaviorsforgroupsthatareusingtheavailablebilingualinterpretation.

Asmentionedinthefindingssections,thereisampleevidencethatvisitorswerelearningduringtheexperience.Visitorsseemedtogettheideathatwehavemicrobesinourbodies,theyaresmall,therearealotofthem,andthereisaninteractionbetweenourbodyandthesemicrobesthatcanbebothpositiveandnegative.Theapproachofusinghands-onexperiencesasawayofengagingdidwork,especiallywhenvisitorsmadesomekindofconnectionwithorexpandeduponwhattheyalreadyknew.Fewergeneralvisitorssaidtheysawtheterm“humanmicrobiome”intheexhibitionatOMSI,comparedtovisitorstoScienceWorksorparticipantsduringtheOMSIFamilyScienceNight.Evenwhilepeoplesaidtheysawtheterm,whenindividualswhodidseeitwereaskedwhatstoodoutforthemaboutthetermtheyhadamoredifficulttimedescribingwhatitwas.Thisdoesnotmeantheyweren’tabletorecallspecificfactswithinthetopic,theyjusthadahardertimediscussingwhatthehumanmicrobiomewasdefinedas.

Whentalkingaboutwhattheyspecificallylearned,participantstendedtoeitherstayverygeneralintheirstatementsortalkaboutspecificexhibitelements.Forexample,whenaskedaboutwhatthemainideawasparticipantsmostfrequentlymentionedmicrobesingeneral,howthebodyworks,andbeinghealthy(although,tobefair,theitemdidaskforthemainideaandnotspecifics).Infact,thebeinghealthymessagewasonethatseemedtocomethrough,notonlybecauseofthecontentbutalsobecausehealthissomethingeveryonecanrelatetoandisconcernedabout.Onerelatedideathatseemedtogetthroughwasthatmicrobes/viruses/bacteriawerenotonlybadforyoubutcouldhaveapositiveeffect.Whilesomepeoplehadmoreextensiveknowledgeofthetopicbecauseofoccupationsorinterests,thiswassurprisingtomanyindividualssincewehavebeentaughtthatgermsarebad.Additionally,themessageabouttheimportanceofmicrobesseemedtocomethrough,thoughtheuniquenessandconstantstateofchangeofone’sownmicrobiome(oneofthemainideas)wasnotmentionedasfrequentlybyvisitors.Asmentioned,thereweremanyideasthatpeoplecouldrecallfromspecificcontentsovisitorsdoseemtobegettingbothgeneralinformationaboutthehumanmicrobiomeacrosstheexhibition,aswellasspecificpiecestheypickedupatindividualexhibitcomponents.Theexhibitdoesseemtohaveachievedtherightbalanceinprovidingengagingexperiencesaroundinterestingorrelevantcontentthatwasmemorableandinformativeforvisitors.Ingeneral,theSpanish-speakingvisitorsfoundthebilingualinterpretationtobeveryhelpful,whilealmostasimportantlythenon-SpanishspeakingvisitorssaidthatitdidnotdetractfromtheirexperienceinZooinYou.Whenaskedwhyitenhancedtheirvisit,peopletalkedabouthowtheyunderstandorlearnbetterintheirownlanguage,someoneintheirgroupdoesn’tspeakEnglish,orbecausetheirfirstlanguageisSpanish.ThefactthathavingthecontentinSpanishchangedhowthelargemajorityofSpanish-speakingvisitorsfeltaboutOMSIisnotsurprising,giventhatitmeanttheycouldengageinthecontentwithmoreease.WhilethisstudydidnotdelvedeeplyintothereasonswhyhavingbilingualinterpretationwouldenhancetheexperienceofSpanish-speakinggroups,anNSFresearchstudyhasconfirmedthattherearemanypositiveaffordancesforbilingualgroupswhenyouprovidecontentinbothSpanishandEnglish.Seehttp://informalscience.org/projects/ic-000-000-001-774/Bilingual_Exhibits_Research_Initiative_(BERI);Yalowitz,Garibay,Renner,&Plaza(2015);Renner,Garibay,Yalowitz,&Plaza(2015).Eventhoughaccesstocontentisveryimportant,thestudyshowedthataccessingcontentwaslessaboutsimplyunderstandingandwasmoreoftenawaytofacilitatetheexperienceforothersornotto“holdback”therestofthegroup.IncludingSpanishalsoprovidedawaytoconnecttotheirculturethroughlanguage,orpracticethelanguagetheywerelesscomfortablewithinasafeenvironment.Thislastpointisinteresting,inthatsecondorthirdgenerationLatinos/HispanicsareoftenEnglishonlyorEnglishdominant,somonolingualSpanish-speakingparentsseehavinginterpretationinbothlanguagesasawayfortheirchildrentopracticeorlearnSpanish.IntheNSFstudy,therewasalsoevidencethatitmadethemfeelmorecomfortable,enjoythevisitmore,andfeelmorevaluedbythe

institution.ThestudywasalsohighlightedinanissueofthejournalMuseumsandSocialIssues(Volume10,Issue1)thatlookedatredefiningmultilingualisminmuseumsandincludesotherrelatedarticles:http://www.maneyonline.com/toc/msi/10/1.Thispointthatnon-SpanishspeakerswereeithernotaffectedbyorpositivelyaffectedbytheinclusionofSpanishinterpretationisanimportantone.Whenthetopicofbilingualtextcomesupinthemuseumfieldthereisusuallyacommentthatnon-Spanishspeakerswillbevisuallyconfusedoroverwhelmedbytheamountoftextifitweredoubled(orslightlymorethandoubled,giventhatSpanishtendstotakeslightlymorecharactersthanitsEnglishcounterpart).Infact,theoverwhelmingmajorityofnon-Spanishspeakersinthisstudysaiditeithermadenodifference,meaningtheycanjustignoreit,orthatitactuallyenhancedtheirexperience.Alittlemorethan1outof5non-regularSpanishspeakerssaiditenhancedtheirexperience,eitherbecausetheyhadsomeknowledgeofSpanishalreadyorthatitwouldbebeneficialforthosewhodidspeakSpanish.TheveryfewpeoplewhosaiditdetractedfromtheirexperiencecommentedonthefactthatsomeofthesubtitlesonscreensshoweduponlyinSpanish,andtheywerenotsureifEnglishwereavailableorhowtoswitchit.ThesecommentswerelessaboutthepresenceofSpanishintheexhibit,andmoreabouthowitwasincluded.Thesefindingsechothosepreviouslyfoundinsomeunpublishedstudies;infact,thereisprettymuchonlyanecdotalevidenceaboutthenegativeimpactonthevisitorexperiencewhentextispresentedinmultiplelanguages,andthesetendtobeaverysmallnumberofcommentsfromafewindividuals.Muchofhowvisitorswillrespondtomultilinguallabelsdependsonhowtheyarecreatedanddesigned,andtheNanotechnologyNSF-fundedprojectcreatedabilingualdesignguidethatisveryhelpful:seethemainNISENetworksiteathttp://www.nisetnet.org(thedirectlinktotheguideisinReferencessectionofthisreport).Overall,theZooinYouexhibitiondidagoodjobofengagingvisitorsinthemaintopicsaboutthehumanmicrobiome,withvisitorsbuildingonwhattheyalreadyknewandaddingtotheirknowledge.Themixofexhibitapproacheswaseffective,withvisitorsrealizingmultiplemainmessagesaswellasspecificinformationinparticularexhibitcomponents.Thebilingualapproachdidnotnegativelyimpacttheexperiencefornon-SpanishspeakersandprovidedmanyaffordancesforbilingualSpanish-speakinggroups.

TheNationalInstitutesofHealth(NIH)awardedOMSIfundingforZooinYou:ExploringtheHumanMicrobiomethroughaScienceEducationPartnershipAward(SEPA)grant(1R25RR032210-01).OMSIpartneredwithhumanmicrobiomeresearchersattheJ.CraigVenterInstitute(JCVI)todevelopa2,000sq.ft.bilingual(English/Spanish)travelingexhibition,aswellaspublicprogrammingandawebsiteexploringcurrentresearchonthehumanmicrobiomeandtheimpactofourresidentmicroorganismsonourhealth.Theexhibitionadvisoryteamincludedadditionalexpertsonthetopicsofmicrobes,publichealth,andinformalscienceeducationtechniques.Moreinformationabouttheproject,includingdescriptionsandphotographsofthe14exhibitcomponentsthatmakeupthetravelingexhibition,canbefoundathttp://omsi.edu/exhibitions/zoo-in-you/.RenderingsanddescriptionsofexhibitcomponentscanalsobeenseeninAppendixA.CHALLENGES

TheAVCteamdecidedtocuevisitorgroups(i.e.,askingthembeforetheyenteriftheyagreetobeobservedandtheninterviewedaftertheyvisittheexhibition)toensureamoreefficientdatacollectionperiod.Itwouldhavebeenmoredifficulttointerceptvisitorsafterobservingthemandpossiblylosetheinterviewportioniftheydecidednottoparticipateinthestudy.Additionally,sinceZooinYouhasanopenfloorplan,whereavisitorgroupcanleavethespaceandcomebacktoitatmultiplelocations,itwasimportanttoletgroupsknowwhichexhibitelementswereincludedinZooinYousovisitorswouldremaininthatspaceduringthestudyperiod.ToexaminetheexhibitioncomponentswithgeneralvisitorsatOMSIandScienceWorks(inAshland,Oregon),visitorswererecruitedattheentranceoftheexhibitionandaskedtoparticipateinthestudy.Thosewhoagreedwerefirstobservedintheexhibition,andtheninterviewedabouttheirvisitafterwards.Thetargetaudienceconsistedofgeneralvisitorgroupswithchildreningrades4-12,includingSpanish-speakinggroups(materialswereavailableinEnglishandSpanish).Attheendoftheinterview,visitorgroupswereaskedtocompleteashortsurveyconsistingprimarilyofdemographicquestions.EvaluationinstrumentsuseinOMSIandScienceWorkswereessentiallythesame;thenameofinstitutionsandthemapsusedfortimingandtrackingaretheexceptions(seeAppendicesBandCfortheinstruments).SinceScienceWorksrepresentsthetypeofmuseum–insize,andvisitorattendance–thatmightrenttheZooinYoutravelingexhibition,thehopewasthatinformationgatheredatScienceWorkswouldhelppaintapictureofthevisitorexperience,includingtimeattendingtheexhibitionandaudiencedemographics,atanothersciencecenter.ThiswouldbehelpfulwhentalkingtootherinstitutionsconsideringtakingZooinYou,asScienceWorksmaybemoretypicalofthetypeofinstitutiontohosttheexhibition.

SurveyswereusedtoevaluatetheScienceCaféheldonAugust18,2015attheEmpiricalTheatre,atOMSI.Itwasoriginallyexpectedthatthisportionoftheevaluationwouldincludeonlyadults(18yearsandolder),howevertherewasasmallpercentageofparticipantswhoattendedtheScienceCaféeventwhowereundertheageof18yearsold.OMSIstaffdistributedsurveysforparticipantstocomplete.Giventhedurationoftheeventandtheneedtoreachmanyparticipantsatonce,participantsweregivenpen-and-papersurveys.Ashortsurveywasthemostsuccessfulwaytocollectalargernumberofsurveysattheevent.Theoriginalgoalwastocollect50to75surveys,howeverthenumberofparticipantsinattendanceexceededtheestimatedattendancenumber.TheevaluationinstrumentincludeditemsfocusedontheScienceCafé,itscontentanddelivery,andhadsomequestionsfromtheGeneralVisitorStudy.Thisincludedratingitems,aswellasclosedandopen-endedquestions.SeeAppendixEfortheinstrument.

FINDINGS:GeneralVisitorStudyNote:Inthefindingssectionnotallofthesamplesizesforthetableswillmatchthetotalnumberofparticipantsinthestudy.Typically,thisisbecausesomeparticipantsdidnotansweraquestionorfilloutpartofthedemographicsurvey.Whennoteveryoneansweredaquestionthepercentageisdividedbythenumberofrespondentsandnotthenumberofparticipants.

Sample-OMSIDatacollectionforthegeneralvisitorstudyatOMSIwasconductedoverfivedays,fromJuly21st,2015throughJuly25th,2015.VisitorswereinterceptedastheyenteredtheZooinYouexhibitionandaskedtoparticipateinthestudy.Anyindividualwhodeclinedtoparticipateinthestudywasnotobservedandwasnotaskedtoparticipateinaninterviewattheendoftheirvisit.Therewereapproximately15refusalstoparticipateinthestudy.Datacollectorsencouragedvisitorstoexploretheexhibitioninthewaytheynormallywould,thenreturntothedatacollectorattheendoftheirtimeintheexhibition.Duringthevisit,datacollectorsobservedandtrackedthemainvisitorandtheirgroup,notingatwhichexhibitelementstheystopped,forhowlong,andwhetheranymemberofthegroupparticipatedinahands-onactivitywithintheexhibition.Attheendofthevisit,datacollectorsconductedashortinterviewwiththemainvisitor,includinganyothermembersofthegroupwhochosetoparticipateintheinterview.Morethantwothirdsofparticipants(71%)inthegeneralvisitorstudyatOMSIwerefemale,comparedtojustoveraquarter(29%)male(seeTable1).MostgeneralvisitorsatOMSIrangedbetween31and50yearsold,withthelargestmajority(33%)between31and40yearsold.Alongwiththe90individualswhocompletedaninterview,281individualstouredtheexhibitioninthegroupswiththesurveyparticipants.SeeTable1forabreakdownoftheagesofothergeneralvisitorstoOMSI.MostoftheotherindividualsvisitingOMSI(69%)wereundertheageof18yearsold.HalfofgeneralvisitorstoOMSIlivedinOregon.Almostathirdofvisitors(32%)livedinthewesternUnitedStates,whileasmallerpercentageofvisitors(14%)livedinotherpartsoftheUnitedStatesorwereinternationalvisitors.MorethanthreequartersofthegeneralvisitorparticipantsatOMSIidentifiedasWhite.Participantswereinvitedtowriteabetterdescriptionoftheirracialidentityinthe“Other”category.Examplesofthosedescriptionswritteninthe“Other”categoryare:AmericanIndianandWhite,AsianandWhite,BlackandAsian,HispanicandMexican.AsmallerpercentageofvisitorsdescribedthemselvesasAsian(6%),AmericanIndian/AlaskaNative(1%),NativeHawaiian/PacificIslander(1%)andAfricanAmerican/Black(1%).MostgeneralvisitorstoOMSI(89%)didnotidentifyasLatino/Hispanic/Spanishinorigin.

SampleFamilyScienceNightsofferauniqueexperienceforaschool’sfamiliesandteacherstovisitthemuseumandsparklifelonginterestinscience.Thiseventforschoolsisdesignedtofostercommunitybetweenteachers,parentsandstudents,andstrengthenparentandfamilyinvolvementinscienceexplorationanddiscovery.Participantsexplorethepopularexhibithalls,aswellasthePhysicsLabandLifeScienceLab,engaginginexcitinghands-onactivities.AnOMSIspecialistworkswiththeschoolorParentTeacherAssociation(PTA)tocustomizetheeventforeachgroup,answerquestionsandtendstothelogistics.ForthisFamilyScienceNightanOMSIstaffmembercoordinatedwithanexternalrecruiterworkingwithMetropolitanFamilyServiceofPortlandtorecruitHispanic/Latinofamilies.MetropolitanFamilyService(MFS)isannon-profitorganizationthatprovidesfamilyservicessuchascounseling,childservices,andparenteducationalservicestofamiliesinneedofthePortlandMetroarea.OMSIstaffworkedcloselywithaprogramcoordinatorwithMFStorecruitHispanic/Latinofamiliesforthisevent.DatacollectionoccurredduringFamilyScienceNightatOMSI,aspecialeventheldatOMSIonJuly20,2015.Attendeeswereinterceptedduringtheirvisitandaskedtoparticipateinaninterview.Bilingualdatacollectorswereemployed,andeachdatacollectorconductedinterviewsinEnglishand/orSpanishwithSpanish-speakingvisitors(visitorschosethelanguagetheypreferred).Almostnineoutof10(85%)ofthesurveyparticipantswerefemale,while16%weremale(seeTable25).Intermsoftheage,morethanhalfoftheparticipants(53%)werefrom31to40yearsold,another19%werebetween26and30years,andanother12%between41and50yearsold.Asecondage-relateditemaskedabouttheagesoftheotherpeopleintheirgroups.AscanbeseeninTable25manyofthoseaccompanyingtheadultswerechildren:30%were0to5,another30%were6to11,and11%were12to18yearsold.Itisimportanttonotethatforthiseventonlygroupswithchildreninthetargetagerangewererecruited,sothisresultisnotsurprising.Someofthemdidvisitwithotheradults,as39%oftheothermemberswereadults19yearsandolder.Morethan90%ofparticipantsinOMSIFamilyScienceNightlivedinOregon.Averysmallpercentage(3%)livedinotherwesternstatesorlivedotherpartsoftheUnitedStatesorwereinternationalvisitors(6%).
