CCRRIICCKKEETT CCLLUUBB…….. Cricket has been played in Ampthill since the early nineteeth

century; cricket at this time was house cricket. This took place

when Ampthill House entertained visiting house sides and club

sides. In Bob Simons “Cricket in Hertfordshire” he noted that in

1860 St. Albans lost their first game in 38 in Ampthill Park.

We can only imagine the difficulty in getting a side from St.

Albans to Ampthill at that time. But the hospitality would have

made the journey worthwhile.

Ampthill Town CC was formed at a meeting at the King’s Head in

1880 “so the people of Ampthill could play cricket”. Sounds like

the “House side” wouldn’t let them play!

One of the first captains was F.S. Tylecote who twice toured

Australia with England.

Ampthill’s President in the 1930s was Sir Anthony Wingfield and

due to his links with the Zoological Society of London an annual

fixture started between the Club & London Zoo.

In 1933 Dr Van Langenberg scored 117 not out for Ampthill against the

Zoo, a hundred in Club Cricket at that time was a very rare event,

particularly by someone of Dutch origin. Club cricket after the Second

World War had a real struggle to re-establish itself, Ampthill Town CC

managed this mainly due to the efforts of Richard Dillingham MBE. Richard

served the club as Captain, Chairman and President until his death.

The award of the MBE was a fitting tribute for his work for “Sport in Beds”

The Club played just friendly cricket until it joined the Millman Trophy

competition in the late 1960s.

The Club’s first eleven lifted the “Trophy” only once in 1994.

The Club has a great youth set up, this was originally started by Peter

Smith in the 1980s before being taken on by Richard Barden, John Wakely

and currently Graeme Presswell.

With four elevens on Saturday and Sunday, we now play our cricket on

Saturday in the Hertfordshire League and Sunday in the Bedfordshire

League.

Sunday skipper Neil Battams lifted the Beds League in 2011, the first time

the club has won the title, and a sixth placed finish on Saturday in

Hertfordshire Division One, means Ampthill Town CC are officially the best

Club in Bedfordshire.

LLaasshhiinnggss wwoorrlldd XXII About lashings world XI

Lashings the “world’s greatest cricket club” brings the two ends of the cricket spectrum together, the grass roots

of village club and schools and the legendary players of our world XI. It’s about experiencing the excitement that

this wonderful game can deliver. Lashings is cricket for the 21st

century. As always Lashings like to refresh the

brand with new players,

Last seasons, squad included: John Emburey (ENG) Graham Hick (ENG) Devon Malcolm (ENG) Philip Defreitas

(ENG) Courtney Walsh (WI) Curtley Ambrose (WI) Tino Best (WI) Herschelle Gibbs (SA) Chris Harris (NZ) Jason

Gillespie (AUS) Greg Blewett (AUS) Stuart Law (AUS) Mohammad Akram (PAK) Saqlain Mushtaq (PAK) Henry

Olonga (ZIM).

Lashings world XI history

Lashings were formed in 1984 when David Folb, owner of Lashings bar and restaurant, was told of the plight of

the Minstrel wine bar cricket club who have been scheduled to play a team the following day in the less than

idyllic surrounds of Mote park; only to find that their opposition had pulled out of the fixture. Folb assembled a

side for the fixture, quickly ringing around friends including his solicitor and bank manager. Even the Lashings

manager John Tobin, and Irish man, was enlisted for the match, having never played a game of cricket in his life

before, or since. This rag bag team took to the field and their performance matched the sum of their parts after

their bowlers had been dispatched for 323 runs, Lashings amassed just 29 in their reply.

This one sided outcome did prevent Folb (ever the entrepreneur) from starting up a Lashings cricket club on a

permanent basis. A list was put up in the bar and soon the Lashings cricket team had enough personnel to be able

to field sides on a regular basis.

“The Pub” side soon grew, challenging much of the orthodoxy in English Cricket. Folb’s vision for a “Harlem

Globetrotter” approach in cricket began to take shape. His biggest coup and perhaps still the biggest in terms of

the development of the club, was the signing of Ritchie Richardson, the former West Indies captain.

Announcements that the great man who had only recently retired from test cricket, would be joining Lashing’s

were greeted by hoots of derision by the local media and sporting community with Geoff Clark, now Meridian’s

front man in the studio, famously declaring he would eat his hat if ever the player played for Lashings.

Panamas, bowlers and Stetsons were quickly hidden away when Richardson announced his arrival at the Meridian

news room. Richardson impact could hardly be underestimated and soon some of the most famous names in

cricket were on their way to lashings. Muttiah Muralitheran was among the first, making his debut on the bottom

pitch at the Mote against the might of Cobham. Mote CC, who became one of the Lashings most bitter early

rivals, refused to offer Muralitheran a centre stage of the top pitch despite the interest in the game; because that

square was in use by their Sunday second XI?

Thankfully beyond the local opposition cricket was at least sitting up and taking notice on a wider scale and soon

counties were entertaining Lashings at their grounds while their rising profile of the club was attracting big names

sponsors even though one of them reneged on the deal leaving Folb to meet a £250,000 short fall in order to

keep the club going and forcing the restauranteur and property owner to sell some of his properties. Lashings

continued to attract the very biggest names in world cricket, seizing the national headlines by the audacious

signing of Brian Lara and others.

The team continues to strike at the heart of the cricketing hierarchy with its audacious “Rude Boy” logo and it’s

jet black coloured clothing but now far away from the windswept expanses of Mote Park on that afternoon in

1984, Lashings can count on packed houses at home and abroad. Their efforts for charity have raised hundreds of

thousands of pounds and they will go down in history as the team that changed the face of English Cricket.
