The department of AMERICAN STUDIES | INTRODUCTION | WHAT IS AMERICAN STUDIES?

American Studies explores American culture in the past and present. Our courses examine American life with the aim of helping students to better understand how the society that surrounds us has been shaped--locally, nationally, and transnationally. We study how Americans have thought about and experienced such matters as ethnic, racial, gender, and regional identities, popular culture, humor, religion, technology, crime, childhood, family, the built environment, community, mental health, and other dimensions of American culture. American Studies classes teach you to recognize cultural and historical contexts, to interpret a range of interdisciplinary sources, to appreciate diversity, to understand and analyze events from multiple perspectives, and to communicate clearly in speech and writing.

We are a department of engaged, energetic professors. In an American Studies class you will encounter a wide range of cultural sources for study. You may read novels or autobiographies, analyze historical evidence or texts, examine movies or television shows as cultural documents, consider the visual arts and music, or view examples of the built environment. You will also be exposed to the most recent scholarship in the interdisciplinary field of American cultural studies.

WHAT CAN I DO WITH MY AMERICAN STUDIES DEGREE?

American Studies majors learn to be careful readers and effective writers who know how to analyze ideas and evidence. These kinds of skills can then be used in a wide range of careers. Some American Studies majors become professors in universities and community colleges: others earn a "single subject" credential that qualifies them to become middle school or high school social studies teachers. This major offers excellent preparation for students interested in law or journalism. Recent majors have also become government workers, librarians, business managers, nonprofit organizers, museum curators, public relations specialists, marketing analysts, and videogame designers.

HOW DO I MAJOR, DOUBLE-MAJOR, OR MINOR IN AMERICAN STUDIES?

The 36-unit undergraduate major requires 4 American Studies core courses (AMST 201, 301, 350, and 401), and 8 electives. Students may take all 8 electives in American Studies or they may include up to 4 courses from other departments , chosen with an advisor. Because of this interdisciplinary option, American Studies is especially well- suited to students interested in a double-major, especially with fields such as communications, history, ethnic studies, or sociology. The minor is 21 units, including 3 core courses (AMST 201, 301, and 401) and 4 electives.

HOW DO I FIND OUT MORE?

You can check out http://amst.fullerton.edu/ . To learn any professor’s office hours, you can stop by the American Studies office in UH-313 or phone the department office at (657) 278-2441.
