An Age of Revolutions
First one and then another and then
another….
Starting a movement
O The Enlightenment had begun a movement.
O First, England overthrew its absolute monarch.
O Then America and France followed.
O After the French Revolution, though, the floodgates opened and many revolutions occurred worldwide.
GreeceO Greece had been a major
world power.
O When the Roman Empire split, Greece was a major part of the Byzantine Empire.
O Then the Byzantines were conquered by the Ottoman (Muslim) Empire.
O Christians in Greece wanted freedom and began fighting for freedom after the French Revolution.
Independence
O The Greek
Revolution took 9
years.
O The English,
French, and
Russian
governments
decided to support
the Greeks and in
1830, Greece
became free.
Not All Succeeded
O Some revolutions did not succeed. Notable
failures included:
O Belgium
O Italy
O Russia
1848O Many revolutions occurred and failed in 1848.
O One notable success story: the French Revolution
of 1848. (haven’t we already heard this story?)
Charles X
O In 1830, Charles X tried to recreate an absolute monarchy in France. He failed.
O He was replaced by Louis-Philippe who lost the people’s favor.
O He was replaced with a new republic.
How Best to Proceed?
O The Radicals (people who wanted a LOT of
changes) couldn’t agree on what to change.
So moderates (people wanting some
changes) took over.
O They elected a president and a parliament
(group to make laws)
Napoleon all over again…
O Louis-Napoleon was
elected president. He
was the nephew of the
famous Napoleon.
O But four years later, he
declared himself
dictator (Napoleon III).
O Stabilized things in
France.
O Industrialized France
