IN DEAD POETS SOCIETY MOVIE

ABSTRACT

Language is an instrument of communication. The communications that

happen around people must be said clearly so that others can understand. In other

side, language can perform an action via utterance. That is called speech act.

Expressive speech act is part of speech act. Speech act is often found in some

aspects, one of them is in movie, such as Dead Poets Society movie. This research

analyzes expressive speech act used by John Keating as the main character in

Dead Poets Society movie.

This research digs out the type of expressive speech act used by John

Keating in Dead Poets Society movie. It also explains the dominant type of

expressive speech act used by John Keating’s utterance. John Keating is the main

character in Dead Poets Society movie.

The research method of this reseach used descriptive qualitative research

design. It analyzed and described the selected expressive speech act used by John

Keating in the form of word rather than number. The researcher explained the data

more descriptively. The object of this research is John Keating as the main

character in Dead Poets Society movie.

The result of this research found several expressive speech acts used by

John Keating in Dead Poets Society movie. For instance: “Thank you for playing

anyway”, “It’s stupid”, “Exrement”, “Congratulation, Mr. Hopkins”, and “I am

sorry”. There were five types of expressive speech act used by John Keating in

Dead Poets Society movie. They are expressive for attitude, thanking,

congratulating, greeting, and apologizing. Also, expressive for attitude was the

dominant type of expressive speech used by John Keating.
