ELCA Good Gifts
From Pastor Jon
This coming Sunday, June 2 our Gospel reading
will be Mark 2:23-3:6 where Jesus has a
discussion/debate with some Pharisees over
observance of the Sabbath. Sometimes those of
us outside the Jewish Tradition oversimplify
things between Jesus, the Pharisees and the
Torah. Dr. Amy Jill Levine, who Pastor Chris
and I had a chance to hear last year at
Clemson, teaches New Testament and Jewish
Studies at Vanderbilt
https://divinity.vanderbilt.edu/people/bio/amy-jill-
levine and brings some wonderful insights. A
YouTube recording of her presenting at the
Westminster Town Hall Forum in 2015 on the
topic “Who Did They Say He Was: Jesus in Text
and Context” is a great place to start. Happy
viewing!

ELCA Youth Gathering in Houston…This month!
We are excited to blast off for Houston later this
month! I am asking everyone to participate, as
you are able, in investing in this experience for
our four high school youth who will be attending,
and support our Adult Leaders Cheryl Summers
and me, Pastor Jon.
Mollie Barrow has created a beautiful display in
the narthex for how you can take stock in our
Youth for this once every three year event. More
info about the gathering can be found at
http://www.elca.org/YouthGathering. Our need
is for close to $6000, but any and all support is
appreciated. Please contact me at 843-304-
5664 or [email protected] and I can
share with you highlights from previous Youth
Gatherings in New Orleans and San Antonio.

"Love of Money?" or "Money of Love?"
Thank you to everyone who participated in Celebrate Generosity! We received $1,323 which will be given to Clemson Community Care.
Youth Worker Position
The UniLu Congregation Council has approved adding a part-time Youth Worker to our staff to help expand our youth ministry. This person will be present for Sunday morning worship and Sunday School on most Sundays as well as plan activities for the various ages to supplement the formal Sunday School curriculum. The Youth Worker will have a love of God and of children. This position is open to UniLu members as well as non-members. It is expected that the person will work between 10 and 20 hours a week and be paid at an hourly rate of $12.00 to $13.50 per hour. A detailed Position Description is posted on both the Narthex and Youth News Boards. Persons interested in the position should apply by providing a resume to Pastor Jon by the end of June. The Women of the ELCA (WELCA) are
collecting the following items as part of our
convention project this year to help Lutheran
Services Carolinas with three of their programs:

Developmental and/or Intellectual Disabilities,
and Transitioning Out of Foster Care. These
items will be taken to the SC WELCA
Convention in June. We will be collecting these
items now and thru the first Sunday of June.
There will be baskets in the Narthex for you to
place your donations.
Toiletries Needed:
Shampoo
Soap
Toothbrushes
Toothpaste
Pads/tampons
Razors
Shaving Cream
Hairbrushes
Combs
We are also collecting monetary donations to
help replace furnishings for girls’ dormitories in
Tanzania damaged by fire. If you would like to
donate to this project please make your check
out to SCWELCA. There will also be a Silent
Auction at convention to help raise funds for the
Tanzania project so if you have any handcraft
items (quilts, crocheted or knitted afghans,
woodwork, etc.) you would like to donate those
would be appreciated greatly as well.
Thanks to everyone for helping us with these
worthwhile projects.
Clemson Community Care
Clemson Community Care has a shortage of
many food items at the present time: oatmeal,
grits, jello, pork and beans, canned and instant
potatoes, dry macaroni and spaghetti pasta,
spaghetti sauce, crackers, canned and
powdered milk, canned vegetables. Your
generous donations will allow them to continue
helping our neighbors provide food for their
families.
Terracycle Update
Due to the increasing shipment size requirements and our small collection site size, we will no longer be collecting waste for the Terracycle collection program. The last day to leave items at the church (in the silver box by the fellowship hall/education building entrance) will be Sunday 10 June. Only the following items will be accepted, all items must be CLEAN and DRY: -dental care and packaging (toothbrushes, toothpaste, floss) -hair, body, and makeup packaging (shampoo, cosmetics, lotions) - Entmann's Brand Little Bites plastic packages - Foil lined energy bar wrappers (LARA Bar, nutrigrain, Cliff, etc.) - Plastic cereal bag packages - Solo Cups (#6 plastic only) - Potato Chip bags (Cheetos, Veggie Straws, Lays, etc.) No pet food, produce, candy, beverage, or frozen food packaging! Summer Refreshments
We are looking for volunteers to provide refreshments during the summer months to be enjoyed between the services from 9:30-10:30. If you are willing to do this, please sign up on the form in the Narthex. Summer refreshments will begin on June 10th and end on August 5th.
Highway 93 Construction During April and May
The first phase of highway construction will begin on Highway 93 between Cherry Road (near the president’s house) and Calhoun Drive (near Sikes Hall). Highway 93 will be reduced from four to two lanes, with one lane for eastbound traffic and one lane for westbound traffic.
Council Corner At last week's Council Meeting, we received the report of the Infrastructure Task Force. There were three major classes of items in the Report - Major Projects, Renovations and Improvements in Furnishings, and Improved Storage and Reduced Clutter. Pastor Jon, Cheryl Smith, David Foster, and Myrna Johnson will prioritize major projects and renovations and improvements. When their report is complete, we will share it with the congregation. This summer, Cheryl Summers, Cece Parker, and Zoraya Rockow will be working on the storage and clutter issues. Please cooperate with them so we get rid of the Unwanted and the Unnecessary and organize the Wanted and Critical. Augie Tortora and his committee of student Tom Hustedt, Cece Parker, and Zoraya Rockow deserve our thanks. We really appreciate your efforts. Speaking of Thank You's, we also want to thank Laura and Ron Black who have been working the last few of months to clean out and organize the Archive closet. You won't believe the changes. We can find things and have room to grow. We really appreciate your efforts!! Jean Mehlman
“God’s Work, Our Hands”
Saturday September 8
Save the date! “God’s work. Our hands
Sunday” will be Saturday, September 8,
2018 for University Lutheran. (we have a conflict
on the 9th) This day is an opportunity to
celebrate who we are as the Evangelical
Lutheran Church in America – one church, freed
in Christ to serve and love our neighbor.
Service activities offer an opportunity for us to explore one of our most basic convictions as Lutherans: that all of life in Jesus Christ – every act of service, in every daily calling, in every corner of life – flows freely from a living, daring confidence in God’s grace.
Stay tuned to find out more.... we will have lunch immediately following the 11:00 service. Many service opportunities will be available for all ages.
Bible Conversations
Ever have questions about scripture and don’t know where to find the answers? You are invited to join a group of folks who meet every Wednesday morning at 10:00 am to discuss scripture and share their personal insights. Pastor Jon joins us most Wednesdays to help lead the discussion. We are currently working through the Gospel of Mark, but frequently wander into other related and unrelated topics. Please join us as often as you can. For the next two weeks we will be meeting in the cry room.

Mission Statement
University Lutheran is a family of faith, called by the Holy Spirit to be one ministry serving both our community
and university. The Spirit calls us to make known, by word and deed, the story of God’s love in Jesus. Our
worship together empowers us to grow as disciples as we receive, celebrate, and share God’s gifts with all of
God’s creation and created ones.

PRAYER OF THE DAY for Upcoming Sunday
Almighty and ever-living God, throughout time you free the oppressed, heal the sick, and make
whole all that you have made. Look with compassion on the world wounded by sin, and by your
power restore us to wholeness of life, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.
