Location and the local areaThe countryside of this historic corner of Essex is dotted with numerous pleasant market towns and villages such as Rayleigh, Hockley and Rochford.

Within a short distance of Clements Gate in the village of Hockley are a good selection of shops. A little further away the old seaside resort of Southend-on-Sea is now one of the best shopping locations in Essex.

Nearby Hadleigh achieved international prominence hosting the Olympic mountain biking events. Close by is Hadleigh Castle, Grade I-listed and once the subject of a John Constable painting and Hadleigh Country Park, a popular scenic attraction.

Hawkwell is a well-connected village. Local towns and villages such as Hockley, Rochford, Rayleigh and Southend-on-Sea are easily reached by car or bus. The A127 provides a convenient route to the M25 which is less than 23 miles.

Clements Gate benefits from a mature green setting, including retained woodland, and species rich established hedgerows, with fine veteran oak trees and areas of wild flower meadow, which are of value both to the local residents and also the inhabiting wildlife. This has evolved in close collaboration with the Project Ecologist to ensure that key habitats within and around the site have been retained where possible.

A scheme of habitat enhancement, aimed at improving the floral diversity of the retained woodland and grassland will also be implemented, along with new habitat creation proposals and the adoption of an on-going regime of conservation management. These measures will combine to maximise the wildlife value of new and existing retained habitats, so that the inhabiting wildlife thrives

in and around the new housing development.

There is a thriving badger sett on the site in an area of retained vegetation in the north-eastern part. A new artificial badger sett has been constructed in the woodland area in the north-western part of the site to accommodate badgers re-located from another, smaller sett that has been closed under the supervision of an ecologist and under Natural England licence.

There is a small colony of brown long-eared bats living in a house to be retained in the southern part of the site. Refurbishment of the house has been undertaken with due care and under supervision of a bat specialist to safeguard the colony and make sure the bats now enjoy greater seclusion. The tiny accesses for bats have been carefully reconstructed to ensure continued use by bats.

The former nursery land had become inhabited by common lizards and other reptiles, the majority of these animals have been translocated to a nearby Country Park. It is hoped that in the longer term once the retained habitats in the open space and woodland edges have been subject to conservation management, reptiles will become re-established within the green spaces in the site.

The value of the retained woodland, hedges and other vegetation for nesting birds, will be increased in the medium term by substantial planting of a wide range of fruiting, berrying and flowering native trees and shrubs including dog-rose, hawthorn, blackthorn, hazel, field maple, oak and wild cherry. This planting, combined with the creation of new areas of wild flower-rich grassland, will also encourage use of the site by a range of insects, small mammals and other wildlife.
