WELCOME FGDP PROMOTING EXCELLENCE IN DENTISTRY

(UK)

Welcome to the 2017 FGDP(UK) Scotland study dayWhat a privilege it is to take over the role of Director of the West of Scotland Division of the Faculty of General Dental Practice (UK).

I have always been a keen devotee of the FGDP (UK), and it seems like only yesterday that I was at the very first FGDP (UK) Scotland Study Day back in 1993. On that day, Dr. Jan Parmeijer challenged us to reflect on the importance of a sound periodontium prior to tackling advanced crown and bridgework. His dentistry was beautiful, and it was truly inspirational stuff!

Here in the West of Scotland, we have a large cohort of FGDP (UK) Members who have found their work in general dental practice inspired and made happier by involvement with the Faculty’s activities. The West of Scotland Divisional Board is made up of 16 practising dentists. I am in awe of the talent and dental engagement that surrounds me at our Board meetings. Together, we seek to propagate the FGDP (UK) ethos which is to improve standards in primary dental care. We are always looking for new talent, and I hope many of you here today will consider becoming Members of the Faculty.

This is an exciting time in the history of the Faculty of General Dental Practice (UK), and I am delighted that our Dean, Mick Horton, has taken time out of his Practice to update you on this personally.

Today approximately 400 dentists, hygienists, team members, students and industry specialists from across the UK have converged on Glasgow Science Centre. This year our subject matter ranges from cements and ceramics to bonding and caries, all culminating in the debate on the future of amalgam. It is an honour to welcome Trevor Burke and a pleasure to host a return visit from Terry Donovan.

Today, we also celebrate the achievements of our younger counterparts. This year has been another successful one for our MJDF tuition group and we are delighted to be joined by so many of our successful candidates. We will also crown the winner of the west of Scotland VT best case presentation and play host to close to 100 BDS5 students from the University of Glasgow.

What a great pleasure it is to welcome you to our 2017 Study Day. Please sit back, relax and enjoy a day of world-class lectures, superb catering and an excellent trade show in the company of colleagues and fellow professionals from across the field of dentistry.

Bruce HoganDirector, west division of FGDP(UK) Scotland

Study Day 2018 THE CALDWELL MEMORIAL LECTUREIt is an honour for FGDP(UK) Scotland to be associated with a figure of the stature of Robert Craig Caldwell. Every year our final session at the study day is dedicated to his memory and in 2016 we were joined in commemorating him by the Glasgow Dental Alumnus Association, the body which established the Caldwell Memorial Lecture.

Born in the United States but raised in Millport, he graduated from the University of Glasgow in 1950 and embarked on a career in dentistry that saw him return to America as Dean of the School of Dentistry, University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

While there, he introduced the comprehensive patient care programme and encouraged the recruitment of minority and female students so that all segments of the population could be represented in the student body. He also encouraged students to seek advanced training and considered students to be his junior colleagues. After just three years in post Bob died, at the age of 46, of chronic myelogenous leukaemia.

His classmates at the University of Glasgow established the Caldwell Memorial Lecture and set up a trust to ensure that world-renowned speakers could be brought to Glasgow.

Terry Donovan and Terry Burke will present the Caldwell Memorial Lecture to all delegates from 3.45pm.

Our illustrious line-up of speakers began with Jan Parmeijer and includes Didier Dietschi, Van Haywood and Martin Kelleher. In that time we have welcomed thousands of dental professionals to events which aim to provide essential updates but also challenge your thinking and day-to-day working practices.

In 2018 we are delighted to welcome our first-ever all female line-up of headline speakers in Charlotte Stilwell and Serpil Djemal. They will present lectures featuring accessible and informative updates on removable dentures and dental trauma. Full details and additional speakers will be announced in early 2018.

We’re delighted to be able to reward young dentists for their commitment and hard work.

The only non-discretionary provider in Scotland. Practice Match is a dental conveyancing company. Expertly tailored discreet service with in-house legal services for the buying or selling of dental practices. The prices are extremely competitive in combination with legal services. We offer legal and dental knowledge in excess of 60 years.

The Glasgow Dental Alumnus Association (GDAA) was established in 1979 and played a major role in the fund-raising activities for the West of Scotland Postgraduate Dental Centre, as well as hosting social and academic events. For a variety of reasons the GDAA became dormant in 2004, but in 2014 was re-established under the direction of William McLean (Lead for Alumni Relations and Fund-raising) and the President, David Still. It has now developed into an active and vibrant Association, engaging with increasing numbers of BDS Glasgow graduates, fund-raising for the Dental Appeal (www.gla.ac.uk/dentalappeal) and enjoying strong support from the University of Glasgow.

The Diploma of Membership of the Joint Dental Faculties (MJDF) at The Royal College of Surgeons of England is designed to assess the knowledge and skills levels of all practising dentists. The MJDF is the gold standard for anyone who wishes to develop their career, whether you are pursuing a career in general or specialist practice. Passing the two-part MJDF exam is the ideal basis for improving your day-to-day practice and career prospects. Our tutor-led study groups are here to help. This year our Glasgow study group achieved a 100% pass rate for part 1. In 2018-19 you can take MJDF tuition with our group in Glasgow, beginning with an induction evening in June.
