ANALYSING CONTENTS PAGES

Page 2: Analysing contents pages

The features allow the reader to find specific things that they enjoy reading quicker than flicking through the magazine.

The ‘Oasis Special’ is likely to entice the reader as it presumably was also featured on the front and could have been a major pull for them to buy the magazine.

The ‘every month’ feature are things that appear every month. This happens in most magazines.

Nick Cave is a musician, previously in a band. He has done a music review and as he is well known, more people are likely to read it. Him being dressed in a suit makes him look professional which gives off the impression he knows exactly what he is talking about.

The main image on the contents page is of Oasis. Them standing on the hill with a slightly high angle shot, make them look superior and sophisticated and their serious look makes them seem driven in their attitude to music.

The date of issue and website names are written here. The websites promote publicity for the magazine.

This magazine has used it’s masthead here as it links in with the front page.

There are 8 different features, excluding the main story, featured on this page. As this magazine targets people who like rock music, it isn’t to appeal to a wider range of musical tastes, but perhaps instead, to appeal to different generations.

‘This week’ makes it sound fresh and new and emphasises that they are taking about current events.

The contents are divided up into different headings; feedback, news, live reviews etc… this is so you can find what you’re looking for easier and it creates less confusion.

Advertising a deal to receive the magazine for £6 a month is a clever marketing tool as it’s a bargain as the magazine costs around £3.20 when buying separately. Subscribing to it means that they have your personal details and can offer you things over e-mail or text, which the weren’t able to do previously and therefore this means that they can earn more money this way.

This is the editorial, where the editor has his say over the weeks events. This can make the magazine seem more personal and you can feel like you know the person behind the magazine.

I was charged with battery once…’ creates intrigue for the reader who would want to know more about this celebrity.

The ‘V’ links in with the title of the magazine and Ciara’s feet are at the base of it which, at first sight, looks like she is holding it up. This creates a visual pinpoint for the reader.

The contents are divided up into ‘features’ and ‘fashion’. This makes it seem more female orientated, although from the picture it seems they are also targeting men. The text fits around Ciara and the simple background makes the page look simple yet effective.

They have credited the photographer at the bottom of the page. This can give them more publicity and people wanting to work with them.

The image used makes me think that the editors of the magazine want create the look of individuality. Comparing it to the other contents pages I’ve analysed, it looks a lot more quirky and edgy.

The simple background is very effective and is incredibly easy to recreate. This is something I might take inspiration from when I consider the pictures for my front cover of the final design.

The editorial is very gossipy and personal, like you’re having a conversation with the editor, ‘see you next fortnight… love, the sh! team xxx’ this links in with their target audience which from looking at this magazine, I would guess to be young teenage girls. These are features that will

be included. They also look personal and have been placed there very naturally like it was just put there which makes the magazine look more informal.

The contents are divided up into ‘news, gossip, whatever’, ‘posters’ and ‘the sh! Guide’. The first section, ‘whatever’ is included in the title, this really makes the magazine informal and definitely appeals to the young teenage girls who would think that it is really cool. The posters would also be exciting as they would be able to put their favourite celebrity up on their bedroom wall and the sh! Guide is about the features that are included every week.

This list of people are everyone involved in the making of the magazine. This can positively alter their job prospects if they were to change to a different magazine job as they could easily prove what their role is in a magazine.

The big feature is interesting for people because they would want to see what ‘Blue’ have fallen out over because knowing personal things about them, makes the fan feel closer to their idols.
