Introduction to all texts
My feature
My documentary is about how the English youth system works and the problems it faces to
date, I also look at what reforms the FA can introduce and what reforms they already have
in place. In my documentary I look at the English youth system in different an gles such as
from an international point of view meaning the England national team. I also compare and
contrast with other European nations in particular Italy and the Serie A.
Another angle that I take me my documentary is to look at the number of foreig n players in
English league and see if theres a link between the foreign players and Englands poor
showing in the FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

New text
The new documentary that I will be looking at is Scottish youth football short documentary
. This is a documentary is very similar to my own, whereas mine looks at the problems the
English youth system faces this documentary looks at the same problem but from a Scottish
point of view. This documentary looks why Scottish football is in decline, include the
national team who failed to qualify to last summers World Cup from a group which they
should have finished second behind Holland.
It shed the light on their top teams (Celtic & Rangers) and why they keep losing heavily to
smaller clubs I Europe. And it centres it arguments on the ground that the Scottish youth
football system needs to be changed and the documentary has interviews with people suchthe head of the SFA. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TRsF0i1adgw
Old text
The old text that I am looking is a channel 4 documentary called An impossible job created
after the England national team failed to qualify for the 1994 World Cup in the USA, which
also falls into the year where England again failed to show their quality in the World Cup.
This documentary looks at the reasons behind Englands failing and what the catalysts were.
The documentary is centred then manager Graham Taylor as he talks about the problems he
faced when England head coach.
This documentary is similar to my documentary because Graham Taylor in this documentary
refers a lot to the fact that he thought the English youth system w as not good enough to
produce frequent young quality English players. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-

Your content
In my documentary I set out to look at the problems in the English youth
system, and also what knock on e
ects theycausesuch as what problems thepose the national team. In this documentary I interview a wide of people
within football such as a member form the Esse F , and academy manager
and also a young aspiring footballer.
Chris Evans Wayne Burnett Jason Twum
In my documentary I take a few angles in theyouth system and what affects
young players getting morechances in the first team at theclubs. The angles
that I take are does the number of foreign players hamper young English
players receiving more first team or is it the governments or F fault that
young player are not breaking into their clubs.

Old t xt
Graham Taylor an impossiblejob looks at the reasons why England failed to
qualify for the1994 World Cup in US . He mainly blames Englandsyouth set
up and says it needs to be reformed if England is to win the World Cup again.
This documentary mainlycentres its argument around that fact that the
English academies are not good enough.
Thesimilarities between this documentary and mine are the fact that this
documentary was released to talk about England failing in a major tournament
which was thesamescenario that I was in when I made my documentary. This
documentary also talks about the English youth system and the problems it
faces.
But thecomparisonsstop there, because in my documentary investigates
other reasons why the England national team is not doing well for e ample the
questions are ask about foreign players.
But this documentary doesnt take different angles on the topic and thats
mostly likely down to the fact that there were not that many foreign players in
English leagues1994.

N t xt
TheScottish youth football isverysimilar to mine because it talks about all the
same that facesScottish football.
The documentarycontains interviews with key personnel in theSF
higher
achy, this issomething that this documentary did better than me.
Head of development in theSF
Because I feel this might have been because of the popularity of the English
league, and theF being more popular.

Mode of address
Your feature
In my documentary I feel that the mode of address is very objective asking
questions and then looking for answers. This approach I think helped mydocumentary, because audience always knew what I was going to do next and
knew exactly was happening in my documentary.
Other mode of address that was also evident in my documentarywas that my
documentary was very direct to the audience in terms of speaking directly to
the camera and the audience, but I also do this in an informal way to engage
with my audience in terms of understanding me.

Old text
The mode of address in Graham Taylor impossible job is very formal, this
mainly due to the fact this documentary was broadcasted by channel 4, and it
also portrays a former England manager.
As like my documentary this production was also very objecti ve asking
questions such as what are the reasons why England failed. This documentary
also came across as saddening because it shows Graham Taylor strugglingwhen England manager this is evident when it shows England winning a match
and then going on to lose the next and ultimately not qualify.
This is a difference between my documentary and channel 4s documentary,
where in my documentary I tried to find reasons why English academies do not
produce enough young talents in contrast to other top European countries.
And Graham Taylor an impossible job in some sense tried to make the
audience feel sorry for him, showing him struggling.

New text
The Scottish youth football documentary is very similar to my own because its
looks at the problems within England and Scotland respectively. As my
documentary and the new text that I am looking are very similar we also share
the same mode of address.
It is very direct, without actually having a presenter in the documentary as it is
all done in a voice over style documentary. It is also objective as it asks
questions and wants to find answers why Scottish football has or is declining in
recent years.

Conventions
Your feature
In my documentary I decided to use as many conventions as possible because I
felt that it would make my documentary more interesting, and it certainly did. Some of the conventions that I used included music sign on sign off, vox pops,
and also archive footage and these features certainly made my documentary
more exciting.
Here are some of the conventions that I used in my documentary, this shows
the different types of archive that I used in my documentary. Her e you can
also see my vox pops, and also my sign on and off.

Old text
In Graham Taylor an impossible job there arent that many different
conventionsused the main conventions that are used in the documentary are
voice overs, and the most frequent one being archive as the documentary
shows footage of Graham Taylor when England manager and also England
matches are shown.
Here are some examples of the conventions used in this documentary; here
you can see archive footage of when Graham Taylor was manager of England.
This shows differences between my documentary and channel 4s
documentary.
But the conventions used in this documentary were very effective because it
went through all Englands qualifiers with voice off Graham Taylor in the
background. And it gave the documentary a sort of timeline effective, meaning
everything was shown chronologically so the audience can what problems hefaced in each stage.

New text
The documentary about youth development in Scottish football is very similar
to mine but not when it comes down to conventions. This documentary was
similar to the old media text that I looked at.
Although it did have a few conventions it did not have many vox pops, and not
any music two conventions that are littered in my documentary , so there are
some conventions that are different.
Some conventions that are similar are conventions such as voice overs, sign in
and sign off and also archive footage.
Archive footage was used a lot in this documentary because there was no
presenter in the documentary a voice over was a must.

Style and form
Your feature
There was a lot of sound in my documentary, mainly being dial ogue this was
important to my documentary because it told the audience what the topic wasabout.
Other sounds in my documentary were voice overs and music and that was
used in many ways primarily as a background to what was being shown on the
screen. The music I used I felt that it related to my topic and what was being
shown visual on the screen mainly because of the lyrics.
Music that I used:
y Chiddy bang opposite toadults
y Kanan waving the flagy Gorillaz dirty harry

Old text
The camera language of this documentary was mainly focused on the topic it
tried to show the dangers if you would call it of managing the England national
team.
This shows some comparisons between our documentaries because my
documentary was a times very light hearted, also the sound used throughout
this documentary was mainly instrumental sounds to cause a bit of tension as
seen for this graphic.

New text
The main sound in this documentary was the voice over which was throughout
the entire documentary. I think gave the documentary a better sense of
understanding because without a presenter being in the documentary
insteadthe camera always cut to facilities and graphics about Scottish youth
structure hence it being more informative.
This documentary was not light heated which again shows comparisons
between mine and Scotlands youth development documentary.

Technology
Your feature
In my documentary I used a lot different technologies including camera,
microphones and tripods, but the stage that I used the main bulk of different
technologies was in my post production stage; when I was editing my work.
This is one of the different equipment I used when editing, but in my
documentary there is not a time when you can see any of the equipment that I
used, except my graphics which I added to put more information across to my
audience the information mainly being factual.
Here are the graphics that I used in my documentary, and this feature is an
aspect that is evident all of the text that I have compared with mine.

In this documentary as I stated the main bulk of different technologies are in
the graphics that are shown in the documentaries to show information about
what is happening in the documentary and the graphics are mainly factual to
show the audience reliability.
