1. BACKGROUND INTRODUCTION Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela dedicated 67 years of his adult life fighting for justice, equality and

freedom for his people. His contribution led to the attainment of freedom and liberation of South

Africa and ensured that a new democratic dispensation immerge from the doldrums of oppression.

His vision ensured that all who live in South Africa end up united and realising that together we all

have a part to play in ensuring the success of our country South Africa. His selfless act and tireless

work ethic inspired the nation to honour and celebrate his memory by dedicating 67 minutes of ones

time to helping others.

This helped to spark an interest in ANB Group (Amandla Nobubele Trading cc) together with Project

ENZA to seek out what perhaps we can do in our corner to serve our people and also at the same

time honour Mr. Mandela’s memory. It has always been our aim and passion to see the tourism

sector in our country becoming a successful one from which almost all sectors of our society can

benefit. It was because of this passion for tourism that we then decided we can make a difference

and dedicate our 67 Minutes for Madiba to exposing the learners for 67 minutes to the Hospitality

and Tourism industry. Furthermore the industry and companies within it, will be doing their bit for in

orientating the learners and exposing them to their hotels or Tourism attractions for 67 minutes (or

more) for Madiba.

The province has released its KZN VISION 2030, has for some time now been advocating the

involvement of grass roots individuals in this sector. This will help children realise opportunities early

on in their lives and will help ensure that there is a constant supply of motivated people who look for

employment and/or creating employment in this sector. By exposing the youth to all relevant

industry players and organisations and key government departments and officials, this opens up the

youth to a world of opportunities. This we do under the banner KNOWING AND GROWING OUR

TOURISM.

The idea for the creation of this event was born after three important events and thoughts:

1. The spectacular hosting of a very successful FIFA 2010 Soccer World Cup, ANB Group felt

there was a need to capitalise on the success of this event and champion an event which will

bring our Tourism industry to learners and students who have a passion and interest in this

sector.

2. The KZN Office of the Premier KZN’s Vision 2030. Under the strategy cluster one key focus

area is “People in Tourism”. The strategic thrusts that are imperative in this industry are:

People development

Transformation

Tourism awareness and understanding

Quality experience and service excellence

What better way to achieve this than introducing the above strategy to the future of this

industry via this event.

3. Mandela Day 67 minutes: essentially giving back to the community one serves is one of the

key focuses of ANB Group and Project Ezna. We want to encourage the Youth to do the

same and preach the doing and giving attitude that President Rolihlahla Mandela has taught

us.

2. KNOWING AND GROWING OUR TOURISM IN KWAZULU-NATAL Based on the interest by the KZN Tourism fraternity to be part of an initiative to grow this industry in the province in particular and the country as well as the continent. After successfully hosting the world cup in 2010, tourism received a major boost in this country at large. Initially there was big infrastructure roll out programme which saw roads and other amenities being brought to a world class standard. This included major hotels and/or lodges and resorts and other attractions who foresaw the need to do justice to this event.

This ensured that not only were we going to have satisfied customers with our standards during the FIFA 2010 Showpiece, but that when visitors came back with more people our facilities and lodgings would be, and still is to a large extent, world class. This infrastructure upgrade together with the KZN Office of the Premier’s 2030 Vision is the perfect opportunity, we think, to engage the South African population in seeing where we can take our tourism going forward.

KwaZulu-Natal is now the market leader for domestic tourism in South Africa, with the just the recent announcement by CNN stating Durban as on of the most underrated cities in the world .KZN is number 2nd leading in SA in terms of international tourism. Tourism contributes 10 percent to the provincial GDP and the tourism sector created 77 000 direct jobs and 154 000 indirect jobs in the Province

As a consequence, KwaZulu-Natal remains the nation's premier domestic tourist destination, with a leading 32 percent share and is the second most popular destination for international visitors. Tourism has been identified as a catalyst for economic growth and together with the rapid growth in the sector, presents a variety of investment opportunities. Present indications are that the KwaZulu-Natal coast will continue to draw tourists for the next 10 years due to its beaches, excellent weather, golf courses and shopping facilities We therefore want to capitalise on this by providing an opportunity to engage the youth and providing them with the information required and bringing the tourism industry to them and light up their world where they can see first-hand that this is an industry to be in. By doing so we believe that we are creating a population that will be dedicated to serving the province at large in a professional manner and this will see them being enthusiastic and committed to KwaZulu-Natal. Furthermore we aim to encourage innovation at their crucial growth stage where their dreams are endless and we are there to guide and advice based on our very own past experiences

3. KZN VISION 2030

KwaZulu-Natal has unveiled a bold plan which we think is the key to unlocking the Provinces potential. This Plan is The KZN VISION 2030. We believe that this plan needs to be introduced to the provinces youth at a very early stage in order for us to impress on them this bold plan.

Under the Provinces PDGS (Provincial Development & Growth Strategy), we have seen the need for us to, as in the somewhat borrowed words of Henry Kissinger “ask not what our province can do for us but what we can do for our province”. We think that under the Strategic Objectives of the Plan, we can add our input to Human Resource Development and Human and Community Development. This we believe will be as a result of the students interacting with industry leaders through our proposed event. This will see them developing the love for the industry and the drive to want to be empowered and eager to learn more about it. Essentially it will kick start the need to dream and uncover opportunities for them within the industry.

Furthermore we have seen that the KZN Office of the Premier intends on assisting the province to become a gateway to the country and the continent and this has been demonstrated under the KZN PDGS’s framework. Within this context of the framework we are certain that this event can assist in the following:

Human Resources Development

Educated Communities

It would help create employable people who are employed

Equitable society

Investor Confidence – a skilled youth and society always demonstrates to investors how safe their investments is

Skilled Labour Force – this event certainly is a stepping stone towards ensuring that the youth becomes a skilled labour force.

Going forward with innovative ideas to grow and sustain the Tourism sector through engagement

with willing learners/students taking Tourism as a subject whilst encouraging excellence and making

a visible difference. This also fits in with the Provincial plan of action for the next five years in line

with the KZN 2030 Vision which is to be a prosperous “Province with healthy secure and skilled

people acting as a gateway to Africa and the world. Furthermore it gives companies and

stakeholders in the industry a chance to do their “67 Minutes of Community Service for Madiba” on

Mandela Day

This proposal aims at breaching the huge gap between the private sector and public sector in the

tourism industry, it will create an opportunity of introducing tourism at a critical career development

stage of learners and students that will shape and enhance their knowledge and understanding of

the tourism and hospitality industry. This event will see all the major stakeholders in this industry

interacting with the youth therefore leaving lasting impression of excitement and joy about their

introduction to Tourism and eventually pave a way forward to interested youth who will in the near

future be owners and pioneers of the tourism industry. The project will acknowledge the two critical

players in the KZN economy, i.e. the private sector both local, foreign based and labour, which will

also promote ongoing partnership with the private sector in the struggle for economic growth and

work creation. The project will consist of two phases:

3.1 PHASE 1: TOUCH AND FEEL OF THE PROJECT LAUNCH

This phase involves the introduction of the project during the Mandela day whereby the

learners’/students will be given the days ‘opportunity and be exposed in the tourism space thus

giving them the experience in real time. The plan is to identify 500 learners as a pilot that are

currently studying the subjects tourism and hospitality as part of their curriculum. The 500 learners

being lead and accompanied by their subject heads will be transported to one of the hospitality and

tourism attraction venue where they will be met by the team from project EZNA together with their

private sector partners in the tourism industry involved on the day.

The project will take place on the 18th of July 2014 in symbolising and respecting the great selfless

act and tireless work ethic is inspirational to the nation and honouring him in this way is a fitting

tribute in honour of his legacy. His contribution led to the attainment of freedom and liberation of

South Africa and ensured that a new democratic dispensation immerge from the doldrums of

oppression. His vision ensured that all who live in South Africa end up united and realising that

together we all have a part to play in ensuring the success of our country South Africa. This will

coincide with the Provincial Public Service under the Provincial Operation Sukuma Sakhe Programme

where our government participate in the struggle of fighting poverty and the world dedication to the

67 minutes.

During the phase of the touch and feel launch, ANB Group will be responsible for administrating of

the launch as well as paying for all logistics of the launch. Their mission will be the following:

Ensure that there are 500-600 students at the event to interact with 5 major hotels and/or

hotel groups, suppliers to the industry, major business companies and individuals within the

industry.

See that the interaction of the youth and industry players happens and is communicated

effectively and efficiently throughout the event.

Ensure that the youth gain valuable insight into the industry via first-hand information from

Captains of industry and see for themselves what actually happens at Hotels and other

Tourism Attractions.

Ensure that Provincial strategy and programs are communicated effectively to all in order

for them to understand what the province has in store for all.

Capture the event on video to ensure that the event can be broadcast to various hubs

thereby ensuring continuous messaging of the initiative, KZN Office of the Premiers

programs and perhaps to be even distributed in schools and universities to ensure

continuous engagement even after the event.

Create a buzz by posting video clips on project ENZA and its partner’s website. Video clips

and other communication strategies to be submitted to different websites to ensure

maximum exposure for donors/funders and businesses.

It will give companies and stakeholders a chance to include this day in their CSI projects and

more importantly it’s an opportunity for them to do their 67 minutes for Madiba whilst

making a valuable difference in tourism.

3.2 PHASE 2: ONGOING TRAINING AND SUPPORT ON TOURISM

ANB Group is to introduce an industry Careers Expo including all Tourism Stakeholders annually and

getting them to exhibit and have interactive sessions with the learners and teachers in a conference

set up with leading students being part of the panellist and encouraging learner confidence and

interaction.

Project ENZA aims at establishing Mobile Hotel & Tourism skills to be taken to the rural areas that

aren’t easy reach as opposed to their urban neighbours. This Plan is to be proposed in conjunction to

the Department of Education needs. By piloting this project we will be empowering the teachers

that are in need of this in order to further instil this confidence to the learners that we want to

encourage excellent marks in their subjects, but these must come with proper meaning,

understanding and execution.

We aim on having partners in the Industry that will afford the shining stars with potential an

opportunity to be taken in by one of them. If the opportunity arises we would’ve made a success out

of one child’s life.

We want to be known as Industry leaders in our continent, through the ever popular spirit of Ubuntu

which we are but also producing the best pupils to take this industry forward and be internationally

recognised and be able to take on the world stage as many have been encouraged by our

honourable MEC Mike Mabhuyakhulu.

We opportunity arises, be able to expose the learners and teachers to other countries starting with

our very own neighbours with the growing initiative of East3Route. Having the honour of being part

of the East3Route, it has taught many Tourism Partners on the opportunities within our reach. With

that I strongly feel Project ENZA guided by the department can take qualifying learners through this

experience together with some subject heads and they then take this experience back to their

classrooms.

As a non-profit organisation that was registered in 2014 but has been working behind the scenes since 2010 in helping put together interested parties and partners in the tourism industry in helping under privileged schools and individuals in making their lives better. With the project finally and properly registered, we have now gone on overdrive in ensuring that we

implement our vision, dreams and mission. Our vision is “Preserving Excellence in tourism through

education and exposure”.

Our Primary objectives are the following:

To empower the youth in the tourism sector

To instil the values of professionalism through uncompromised service

Create awareness of opportunities out there in the sector

To create sustainable jobs through exposing people to ideas that would not have had an

opportunity to dream of

To help alleviate poverty

To increase tourism in the province in particular and country in general

Create linkages between corporate and education department.

From a long and lasting relationship with the KZN Office of the Premier so we can forge

ahead with other initiatives

To pray for prosperity in the region

6. CONCLUSION In conclusion we are requesting the following:

A partnership with the Department to do this event.

A funding support from the KZN Office of the Premier to fund this event “Knowing and Growing our Tourism”

This is a platform for the private sector partner to introduce itself to learners and all who will be in attendance and highlight its importance and various programmes and initiatives in the province.

Project is aimed at introducing Learners and students to the industry and mainstream economy.

Giving learners and students an opportunity to dream and seek out opportunities as early as possible so that they know what is out there in the industry in terms of employment and business opportunities.

Companies and stakeholders can also identify talented students and see who amongst them could in the near future be given bursaries or hand-picked to be in these companies in the near future.

This event wills not only give Companies an opportunity to gain mileage for their CSI scorecards but also it gives them an opportunity to contribute to Mandela Day and the 67 minutes for Madiba initiative.

Gives Companies an opportunity to contribute meaningfully in the development of learners’ careers within the tourism industry.

We have structured this year to be a pilot project at the current scale as the main vision is to have this initiative every quarter in order to maximise impact. This year learners will be from the Metro and the neighbouring districts (EThekwini, uMgungundlovu, iLembe and Ugu)

As an annual project we propose to split the province into 4 (south, west, north and far north) and likewise involve the partners in those regions to give our destinations equal exposure and our partner’s fair rotation. As we propose to do this annually, the event of the third quarter will always fall on Mandela Day. As we celebrate 20 Years of democracy we need to nurture our youth to making informed decisions as they choose careers.
