MASKS The comedy and tragedy masks have their origin in the theatre of ancient Greece. The masks were used to show the emotions of the characters in a play. The earliest plays were called Satyrs, they were parodies of myths. The actors in these plays that had tragic roles wore a boot called a buskin that elevated them above the other actors. The actors with comedic roles only wore a thin soled shoe called a sock.

The ancient Greeks are famous for their magnificent Doric and Ionic temples, and the example par excellence is the Parthenon of Athens. . Built in the mid 5th century BCE in order to house the gigantic statue of Athena and to advertise to the world the glory of Athens, it still stands majestically on the city’s acropolis. Other celebrated examples are the massive Temple of Zeus at Olympia (completed c. 460 BC), and the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion (444-440 BCE)

The Diskobolus of Myron is a Greek sculpture that was completed in 450 BC. The original Greek bronze is lost but the work is known through numerous Roman copies, both full-scale ones in marble, which was cheaper than bronze, such as the first to be recovered, the Palombara Discopolus, or smaller scaled versions in bronze.

The Nike of Samothrace or The Winged Victory of Samothrace , discovered in 1863, is estimated to have been created around 200–190 BCE.It is 8 feet (2.44 metres) high. It was created to not only honor the goddess, Nike, but to honor a sea battle. It conveys a sense of action and triumph as well as portraying artful flowing drapery through its features which the Greeks considered ideal beauty.

Aphrodite of Milos better known as the Venus de Milo, is an ancient Greek statue and one of the most famous works of ancient Greek sculpture. Created sometime between 130 and 100 BC, it is believed to depict Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love and beauty (Venus to the Romans). The arms and original plinth were lost following its discovery. It is currently on permanent display at the Louvre Museum in Paris.
