plays total miles while the bottom lineis a daily trip-meter. To reset dailycounter reading press and hold downthe reset button 11 for more than 5 swith the car stopped. Setting thedaily counter to zero also occurswhen removing the battery terminal.

13 – ABS indicator lamp (in

optional design version). Lights upwith yellow light when turning ignitionoff and goes out after engine start-up (self-testing mode).

ATTENTION!

In all other cases indicatorlamp lighting gives evidence of afault occurrence, which must beeliminated only in a validatedenterprise of sales and servicenetwork.

14 – Check lamp «checkengine».

The lamp lights up when turningon ignition and goes out after enginestart-up if engine ECU (EMS) is clearfrom faults.

In case of detecting of any defectin the system the lamp is on continu-ously or blinking.

15 – indicator of time, tempera-ture and car-system voltage.

Switching over between indicationof time, ambient air temperature andon-board car-system voltage is doneby short-time pressing of button 11.

When turning on ignition at ambi-ent air temperature of higher than +2 0С time indication is always dis-played. When ambient temperature

drops below +2 0С the indicator dis-plays time (hours) readings for 3seconds and then switches over totemperature display, the readingbeing blinking for the first 10 sec-onds.

When outside air temperatureexceeds +3 0С and then again goesbelow + 2 0С:

– being in hours display state theindicator automatically switches overto temperature display, with thereading blinking for the first 10 se-conds;

– in case of temperature indica-tion, its normal mode of operation isinterrupted with 10 second longblinking.

Setting of hours and minutes isdone in time indication mode byturning of button 11 towards charac-ters «h» (hours) and «m» (minutes).

After removal of terminal contactfrom accumulator battery and sub-sequent voltage recover the timecount starts from zero.

tive of slack tension (break) of alter-nator drive belt or charge circuit fail-ure or possibly alternator itself.

17 – check lamp of braking sys-tem emergency state and parkingbrake turn on. It is lit red when fluidlevel in brake hydraulic drive tankdrops below «MIN» mark whenengaging parking brake.

ATTENTION!

Lighting of indicator lamp whenparking brake is off is indicativeof brake fluid low level. Car move-ment is prohibited until elimina-tion of fluid low level cause.

18 – low oil pressure indicatorlamp. It is lit red when turning onignition and goes out after enginestart. Red lit when engine is runningif oiling system pressure is low.

ATTENTION!

In case of indication of emer-gency oil pressure level value youshould immediately stop moving, stall the engine and apply to LADAdealer for elimination of the fail-ure, because low level in lubrica-tion system leads to heavy dam-age of the engine.

19 – driver and front passengerunfastened seat belt indicatorlamp. It is lit red at ignition turn-on ifthe driver’s seat belt is not donned.

Simultaneously with light signalingturn on buzzer beep is sounding.

WARNING!

When driving always don theseatbelt and never carry passen-gers unfastened with seat belts!

ENGINE START

Start features of engine withelectronic control system

1. Press clutch pedal and set gearshift lever neutral position.

2. Insert the car key and turn onthe starter motor. If the engine willnot start operating at the first tryswitch ignition off and turn the startermotor on again in 20–30 seconds.Keeping the starter motor turned onfor more than 10–15 seconds is notrecommended. It is prohibited topress accelerator pedal duringengine start. In case of heavy enginestart (too much fuel delivered intocombustion chambers) press theaccelerator pedal as far as it will goand switch on starter motor for 10-15 seconds to purge cylinders andthen release the accelerator pedaland start the engine in the pre-scribed manner.

In attempting to start the enginefor longer than 20 seconds thestarter motor will be switched offautomatically (overtemperature pro-tection).

Once the engine is started, release the ignition key and it willautomatically come back to position I(refer to Fig. 19). In case of stableengine operation smoothly releasethe clutch pedal.

At ambient air temperature minus25 0С and lower and also duringheavy snowfalls it is recommendedto put a radiator cover on trim grilleholes for intense engine warm-upand to maintain its thermal condi-tions.

Engine start in cold season

The present recommendationsensure starting of a properly operat-ing vehicle with accumulator batterycharged at least up to 75%.

1. Crankcase oil must comply withambient temperature (refer to Ap-pendix 1).

2. Gasoline volatility class – for win-ter period depending on climatic re-gion is used as per GOST R 51105-97.

3. Minimum electrode gap of igni-tion plugs, i.e. to 1 mm, is recom-mended in winter period.

4. When leaving a car for long timeat parking place in the open air it isrecommended to «burn» ignitionplugs before engine cutoff. To thisend, increase engine rpm up to 3000 min-1 and then stall it.

5. Before starting, take a pause ofa few seconds with ignition on forelectric fuel pump to have timeenough to increase pressure in thefuel rail up to working value.

6. Hold clutch pedal pressedbefore and during engine startingand do not apply accelerator pedal.

7. If during 10 seconds there isstill no sparking in the cylinders, stopyour attempt to start the engine.Repeat the attempt in 40 seconds.

8. If the second attempt to startthe engine was a failure, the thirdattempt should be started withaccelerator pedal pressed all the waydown (cylinders drainage condition). After 6–8 seconds of purging startsmoothly releasing accelerator pedaland hold it in a position when spark-ing will occur.

Page 28: and its versions - vaz¤. 538 User manual for LADA 4x4 and its versions JSC AVTOVAZ•TOGLIATTI•RUSSIA

9. If even the third try to start theengine is a failure, it means thateither ambient temperature is lowerthan prescribed by TechnicalSpecifications (minus 25 0С is marginof engine cold start capacity withoutauxiliary devices) or the engine hasbeen out of order, ore there existsome deviance from recommenda-tions set forth above.

An engine equipped with elec-tronic fuel injection (EFI), catalyticconverter and oxygen sensor ope-rates properly only if unleaded gaso-line is used. Leaded gasoline will dis-able these elements in a short timeand this leads to smoky exhaust mis-sion, sharp increase of fuel con-sumption and degradation of cardynamic performance.

ATTENTION!

Catalytic converter is a costlyunit designed to provide environ-ment protection. The catalystmay break down, and in case ofmisfire (piston knock and jerks ofthe car when moving) fuel will beignited in the catalyst, with itstemperature sharply increasing.Engine ECUs have catalyst mis-

fire protection function. CHECKENGINE indicator starts blinkingwhen cut-outs occur in one or twocylinders, delivery of fuel is cutoff to cylinders in which misfirehas been detected; after that theindicator is glowing continuously. In occurrence of misfire immedi-ate actions must be taken for itselimination.

For vehicles equipped with ca-talysts cranking by towing is onlyallowed with cold engine. It ispreferable to start the enginewith another car’s battery usingauxiliary cables. By no means usestarter motor to move the car.

ELECTRONIC ANTITHEFT SYSTEM

Part of the cars produced areequipped with electronic antitheftsystem ensures that the engine canonly be started after reading a codefrom a key. The cars are fitted withАПС-4 antitheft system. Immobilizer –an electronic control module – is themain element of the electronicantitheft system. After reading acode from the working code key andidentifying its code value the immo-bilizer generates enabling codecommand to engine ECU. The immo-bilizer has an integrated protectionfunction against key fitting and codereading. The code key includes aspecial unit enabling translation of acode value in a coded and continu-ously varying state. Code keys havean inscription denoting an antitheftsystem type.

АПС-4 antitheft system user manual

Cars fitted with АПС-4 electronicantitheft system are provided withadditional protection against unau-thorized use by means of enginestart disabling.

The antitheft system set includescode keys additionally attached tothe car. The two black keys are work-ing code keys which should be nor-mally used for releasing of guardmode and one red key used as ateaching (programming) code key.The teaching code key is used forantitheft system activation and initialteaching of working code keys andalso to reprogram the system when aworking code key is lost and to teachadditional working code keys as wellas to restore working condition of thesystem when replacing faulty elec-tronic units.

АПС-4 antitheft system allows toteach and operate simultaneously 1-4 working code keys.

The antitheft system must be acti-vated during PDI (predeliveryinspection). Make sure that theantitheft system has been connected

and operates properly. To this effect, shut all the doors of the car exceptfor the driver’s door. Step into the carand shut the driver’s door. Systemstatus LED indicator must start blink-ing at a frequency of two times a sec-ond. Approach anyone of the blackcode keys to the indicator, the LEDmust go out at this and at the sametime a double beep signal mustsound. After that you may turn onignition and start the engine – theantitheft system operates properly.

ATTENTION!

If the engine can be startedwithout putting the key to indica-tor it means that the antitheft sys-tem is inactive, and you shouldrequest for its programming andbringing to active state when buy-ing the car and after its technicalmaintenance.

Antitheft system entry into guardmode is occurring automaticallyupon ignition turnoff and depends onfurther actions of the driver. If the dri-ver’s door has not been opened orhas been opened and remainedopened, then setting to guard mode

occurs in 5 minutes; if the driver’sdoor has been opened and thenclosed, then setting to guard modehappens in 30 seconds from themoment of door closing.

In all cases, a beeping sound isheard with increasing pace 15 sec-onds before setting the system toguard mode and indicator LED glints.

If setting to guard mode is notdesirable it can be disabled by turn-ing the ignition key to «ignition turn-on» position.

Guard mode release

To release the antitheft systemfrom guard mode switch it over to keycode «reading» mode in which LEDindicator is blinking at a frequency of2 times a second. Entry into «read-ing» mode is possible in two ways:

– by opening or closing of the dri-ver’s door; in this case «reading»mode lasts 1.5 minutes;

– by turning of ignition on and offin which case «reading» mode lasts10 seconds.

Put the system to «reading» modeand approach any one of the blackcode keys to indicator – LED indica-

4* 27

Page 30: and its versions - vaz¤. 538 User manual for LADA 4x4 and its versions JSC AVTOVAZ•TOGLIATTI•RUSSIA

tor must go out simultaneously withdouble beep sound. After that youcan switch ignition on and start theengine.

ATTENTION!

Never use the red key torelease the antitheft system fromguard mode, this might disableengine start. In view of impor-tance of the red key please keep itsecure at home. In case of loss ofthe red key, once the antitheftsystem has been activated, war-ranty obligations on the systemand engine ICU quality are notassumed.

Particular cases

1. Loss of a working code keyand teaching additional workingcode keys.

In case of loss of working code keyit is recommended that the system bereprogrammed using the remainingcode keys in order to prevent itsunauthorized use and auto theft. Then it is possible to by new workingcode keys and teach the systemanew with the use of remaining andnew code keys. Reprogramming is performed by LADA dealer.

28

2. Loss of a teaching code key.In case of lass of a teaching (pro-

gramming) key it is not possible toperform reprogramming of new codekeys as well as the remaining workingcode keys. This means that car oper-ation is possible with the availableworking keys but in the event of theirloss or immobilizer fault it will be nec-essary to replace immobilizer, enginecontrol unit and also all code keys fornew unprogrammed ones. Followingsuch replacement, it will be neces-sary to go through procedure ofantitheft system activation by LADAdealer.

3. Faulty immobilizer replace-ment.

Antitheft system teaching proce-dure must be performed by LADAdealer after replacement of a faultyimmobilizer.

4. Replacement of faulty enginecontrol unit (ECU).

A faulty ECU needs to be replacedfor a properly operating one with itsantitheft function nonactivated. Aftersuch replacement it will be necessaryto have the antitheft system activatedby LADA dealer.

5. Antitheft system diagnos-tics.

If after releasing of the antitheftsystem guard mode and ignition turn-on the LED indicator blinks 1-2 timesand goes out it means that antitheftsystem is in good order. If afterreleasing of the antitheft systemguard mode and ignition turn-on sys-tem status LED indicator blinks 1 timeper second and engine will not start itmeans that the antitheft system isfaulty. It is necessary to apply toLADA dealer for fault elimination.

Courtesy light turn-off delay control

This function allows keeping pas-senger compartment illuminated fora while after car door closing whichfacilitates driver’s when it is dark.

To enable this function, the lightswitch must be set to «Off» position. In this state, the light is turned onwith door opening and glows all thetime while the door is open. If ignitionhas not been switched on, then afterclosing the door the lamp keepsglowing for 12 seconds more andthen smoothly goes out within 4 se-

Page 31: and its versions - vaz¤. 538 User manual for LADA 4x4 and its versions JSC AVTOVAZ•TOGLIATTI•RUSSIA

conds. If the door is closed with igni-tion turned on, the light goes outright after door closing. If duringcourtesy light turn-off delay opera-tion the ignition key is set to «On»state, then courtesy light will go outwithout delay.

If during courtesy light turn-offdelay operation the door is repeated-ly opened, the light is turned on andkeeps lighting all the time while thedoor is open and further on – asdescribed above.

Alternative engine start procedure

This procedure enables enginestarting for one trip without codereading from working (black) key incase of its loss or faulty antitheft sys-tem. The procedure is possible touse only in case of preprogrammed«bypassing password» consisting ofsix digits. Activation of alternativeengine start procedure must be per-formed during PDI of maintenance ofthe car by LADA dealer only at theowner’s will and in his presence.

29

How to use immobilizer and ignition keys

To start engine on the carequipped with electronic antitheftsystem:

1. After opening of any of thedoors or short-time ignition switch-on (if door switch is out of order)immobilizer switches over to «codereading readiness» mode for 30 sec-onds – light indicator 1 (Fig. 20) ofsignaling sensor 2 is blinking withdouble frequency.

2. During this time intervalapproach working code key 3 to indi-cator sensor. After code readingimmobilizer unit identifies its validity –light indicator glows for 2 secondsand goes out and enables electronicengine control unit thereby enablingengine starting.

Perform engine start by turningthe key in the ignition switch 1 (See.Fig. 19) from position I («ignition») toposition II («starter motor»).

Ignition switch has locking whichprevents starter motor switch-onwhile the engine is running. Forrepeated engine start after abortiveattempt set the key from position I to

0 («Off») and then turn the startermotor on again.

The key is removed when in posi-tion III of ignition switch. As thistakes place, mechanical antitheftdevice is actuated which locks thesteering shaft.

In order to avoid auto theft donot leave the key in the ignitionswitch!

Fig. 21. Transfer box levers

Fig. 22. Shift pattern

ARRANGEMENT OF TRANSFER CASE LEVERS

Differential locking lever can takethe following positions (Fig. 21):

Р – unlocked;Б – locked.When switching on locking differ-

ential locking indicator lamp 11 lightsup (See Fig. 13).

Gear shift lever positions in trans-fer case mean as follows:

Н – low gear;N – mid-gear; В – top gear. After gearing up differential lock-

ing may be performed while in carmovement with clutch released.

30

CAR MOVEMENT

Check positions of transfer caselevers before driving – it should cor-respond to road conditions.

Start driving in first gear and withengine rotational frequency increas-ing perform upshift in appropriatetime. Gear shift pattern is shown inFig. 22.

The clutch used in this car has nogaps in the drive. In view of this, toavoid clutch slippage, release thepedal after gear shifting and clutchengagement. Do not keep your footpressing clutch pedal when moving.

Shift down well-timed and ac-cording to current road conditions, switch over to low gear in the gear-box avoiding engine overload.

For backing, push gearshift leveras far as will go and move it to posi-tion corresponding to reverse gear

Page 33: and its versions - vaz¤. 538 User manual for LADA 4x4 and its versions JSC AVTOVAZ•TOGLIATTI•RUSSIA

switching. Put in reverse gear onlyafter car complete stop.

When hill climbing, taking off, towing a heavy trailer, moving onloose ground and also to obtain min-imal driving speed on roads with hardpavement preliminary engage lowgear in the transfer case. Engagingof transfer case low gear is recom-mended after car complete stop.

When passing rough road sec-tions lock the differential in advance.

Do not lock differential atwheel-spin moment. After pass-ing of such road sections unlockthe differential because drivingon good motorways with differen-tial locked reduces power trainmechanical life, increases tirewear and fuel consumption andmight cause skidding when brak-ing.

As far as possible, drive at moder-ate and constant speed. Brick accel-eration and deceleration and drivingat high speed leads to excess fuelflow. Moreover, fuel waste is alsocaused by low tire pressure, worn outor fouled spark plugs, using engineoil with higher viscosity than recom-mended.

Perform partial braking from timeto time during driving to dry thebrakes as efficiency of wet brakes issharply reduced.

When overtaking, switch wind-screen wiper on and put it to maxi-mum efficiency – this will help avoidvisibility loss due to possible watersplashing from under wheels of thevehicle being passed. Such safetyprecautions are also desirable whenbeing overtaken.

Do not perform overtake in rainyweather if water drop cloud fromunder wheels of the car ahead com-pletely closes overtake area visibility.

To avoid moving in the water tail ofthe cars ahead of you increase thedistance and reduce driving speed.

When driving along sidewalks inrainy weather or after the rain andpassing puddles slow down to avoidunder wheel water splashing overpedestrians.

31

During driving see after operationof the systems by watching instru-mentation and indicator lamps. Redindicator lamps must not glow innormal conditions – their light is sig-naling that an appropriate systemneeds checking.

Passing fords and puddles

Driving through water barriersrequires extreme attention as theymight hide pits or underwater obsta-cles which can damage wheel discsor suspension parts. Passing waterbarriers with the depth of more than0.5 m is inadmissible. Driving intowater and wading must be per-formed carefully avoiding wavesformed near radiator grille as thismight cause water ingress throughair filter intake to the engine. This willinevitably bring the engine out ofoperation.

Take special heed in the first min-utes of raining as wetted dust on theroad pavement forms slippery filmsharply reducing tyre grip on theroad.

Page 34: and its versions - vaz¤. 538 User manual for LADA 4x4 and its versions JSC AVTOVAZ•TOGLIATTI•RUSSIA

BRAKING AND PARKING

Brake system design ensureseffective braking. However, try toperform smooth and moderate brak-ing in all instances avoiding abruptdeceleration.

Do not turn ignition off and do notget the key out of the ignition switchwhen the car is moving. With enginestalled a higher force needs to beapplied to the brake pedal to decel-erate the car. Besides, when the keyis out the steering shaft is lockedwith antitheft system and the carbecomes unsteered.

In case of breakdown of one of thebrake system circuits car decelera-tion is provided by the second brakecircuit. As this takes place, brakepedal travel increases and brakingefficiency is reduced which at firstinstant you may take for completebrake failure. In this case do notrelease the pedal and do not pressthe pedal repeatedly; this will onlyincrease the length of the brake path;instead, press the pedal until youreach maximum possible brakingeffect.

When stopping on up-grade or ondown grade engage parking brakeand first or reversing gear respec-tively.

To prevent freeze-in of the brakepads to the drums after driving onwet roads with wide fluctuations intemperature do not leave the car onoutdoor parking ground with parkingbrake engaged without having driedthe brakes by regular smooth brak-ing when driving to parking area.

ABS – Antilock Brake System

In option design versions thecars are fitted with antilock brakesystem (ABS) which prevent wheellocking at braking thereby ensuringthat guided movement trajectory andminimum length of brake path aremaintained in virtually any road con-ditions. However, braking on a roadwith loose pavement (gravel, sand,non-compacted snow) may causesome longer brake path as com-pared to braking in the same condi-tions with the wheels locked.

ABS also performs additionalfunction of brake force distributionelectronic control which at service

braking and failure of main ABS func-tion ensures an optimum ration offront and rear wheel brake forces.

ATTENTION!

To avoid restriction of ABS per-formability do not fit the car withtyres of different size.

In emergency braking, apply thebrake pedal as fast as possible withmaximum force and hold it pressedup to the end of braking. Do notrelease the brake pedal even whencar movement direction is changingat braking.

WARNING!

Cadence braking (brake pedalreleasing an repeated pressing)increases the length of the brakepath of cars with ABS.

ABS function at braking comes instarting with a speed of more than 8 km/h and is accompanied withslight pulsation of the brake pedaland characteristic noise of ABS actu-ator gears. ABS ceases operationwhen car speed drops to 3 km/h.

32

Page 35: and its versions - vaz¤. 538 User manual for LADA 4x4 and its versions JSC AVTOVAZ•TOGLIATTI•RUSSIA

WARNING!

ABS indicator lighting evi-dences ABS function failureexcept for self-testing modewhen turning on ignition. In thiscase operation of brake hydraulicdrive is not impaired. Simul-taneous glowing of ABS light indi-cator and brake force distributionelectronic control indicator evi-dences failure of all ABS func-tions except for self-testingmode when turning on ignition. Inthis case early locking of rearwheels is possible at braking anddangerous skidding. In bothcases the failure must be elimi-nated by LADA dealer as soon aspossible.

Auxiliary braking system

Cars with ABS are equipped withvacuum brake booster and auxiliarybraking system which identifies theneed in emergency braking by rapidapplying the brake pedal and auto-matically provides maximum brakingefficiency throughout the time whenthe brake pedal is pressed.

CAR TOWING

When you need to tow your car fixthe towrope only at speciallydesigned front 1 (Fig. 23) or rear 2tow eyes.

Before towing put the key in theignition switch to «0» and turn offlight signaling according to trafficregulations. When towing see to itthat towrope is kept tense. Besides, note that the vacuum brake boosterperforms its function only whenengine is running. Therefore, whenbraking apply much more force tothe brake pedal.

Perform car towing smoothlywithout jerks and sharp turns.

OPERATION OF A NEW CAR

During making the first 2000 km ofmileage:

1. Do not exceed speed valuesspecified in Table 1.

2. Do not tow trailer and car with-out extreme necessity.

3. Such driving manners as abrupttakeoff including with parking brakeengaged, turning with wheel spin-ning at maximum engine speed isinadmissible as this causes dam-age of differential.

4. Do not allow overheated enginerunning (threshold is 115 0С).

5. Before the end of brake padrun-in period (during 3000 km ofmileage) relative difference in brakeforces of rear axle wheels whenmeasured to methods in line withGOST R 51709-2001 standard mustnot exceed 35%.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONSIN CAR OPERATION

The car is easily steered has highdynamic and speed performance onhighway and also high cross-countrycapacity in conditions of wet dirtroads, sand and snow-covered ter-rain. However, bear in mind that thecar is not designed for permanentoperation in heavy road conditions.

Do not exceed loading of the carspecified in the manual. Overloadleads to damage of front suspensionelements, bending of rear axlebeam, early tire wear, vibration ofbody and loss of car stability. Weightof cargo with luggage containerinstalled on the car roof must notexceed 50 kg without exceeding ofpayload.

Before you switch on the wipers incold season make sure that the wiperbrushes are not freezed to the glass. If this recommendation is ignored itmay cause not only wiper damagebut also breakdown of their drives.

Soft suspension of the car effi-ciently absorbs oscillations at fastdriving on a road with irregular sur-face. However, sharp knocks maydeform axes of lower arms and

knock out of action other parts ofchassis. Therefore, driving at highspeed on such road is not recom-mended.

For lubrication of units andassemblies and charging of fuel tankuse materials recommended by themanufacturer (See Appendix 1).

Do not allow car operation withwhen insufficient oil pressureindicator lamp is glowing.

Never allow engine running atengine speed when tachometerpointer is in red area of the scale.Tachometer pointer in red area indi-cates approaching engine speed tomaximum permissible value. If maxi-mum permissible crankshaft RPMvalue is exceeded then at reaching6200 min–1 ECU will start to cut offfuel delivery which may cause pistonknock and jerks in care movement.

Fuel delivery is resumed whenengine speed is reduced.

Operation of tires with air pressurevalues different from those recom-mended leads to their early wear anddeterioration in car stability andresponse.

High-performance disc-type frontbrakes are applied in the car design. However, their durability is subject toproper maintenance – do not allowaccumulation of consolidated mud inbrake gears and wash after drivingon deep mud road.

A high energy ignition system isinstalled in the car. Therefore it isprohibited to perform engine start bymeans of spark gap, disconnecthigh-tension wires on running engineand check high-tension circuits «forspark» as it might cause burnout ofhigh-voltage parts and ignition sys-tem breakdown.

ECU-EQUIPPED CAR OPERATION FEATURES

Indicating lamp « » turningon with the engine running does notimply that the engine must bestopped immediately – the ECU(electronic engine control unit) hasbackup modes enabling engine run-ning in conditions close to normal. However the vehicle must be takento LADA dealer at the earliest oppor-tunity to detect the cause of indicat-ing lamp illumination.

In ECU-equipped car with cataly-tic converter and oxygen sensor, theengine operates properly on condi-tion that unleaded gasoline only isused. Leaded gasoline will soonknock these elements out of actionwhich will be accompanied withsmoky exhaust fumes and sharplyincreased fuel consumption.

ATTENTION!

Catalytic converter is a costlyunit designed to provide environ-ment protection. The catalystmay break down, and in case ofmisfire (piston knock and jerks of

the car when moving) fuel will beignited in the catalyst, with itstemperature sharply increasingwhich causes catalyst damage.Engine ECUs have catalyst mis-fire protection function.

For vehicles equipped with cat-alysts cranking by towing is onlyallowed with cold engine. It ispreferable to start the enginewith another car’s battery usingauxiliary cables or external 12 Vcurrent supply.

By no means us starter motorto move the car.

As the catalyst has high tempera-ture, see to it that when parking thecar there is no dry grass or otherflammable material (rags, chips etc.)under the catalyst which is located inunderbody area.

In the car equipped with EFI system ECU contains a function ofswitching on of electric fuel pump for 2 seconds when ignition isswitched on.

Disconnection and removal ofhigh-tension wires from ignition sys-tem devices must be performed onlyby pulling at the protective cap. Wireremoval by pulling at high-tensionwire is prohibited!

This section gives brief descrip-tion of some types of activities on carmaintenance and routine repairs.

Comprehensive process of main-tenance, repair and disposal activi-ties are available at LADA dealerenterprise which is also equippedwith special equipment and tools. Inview of this and to provide high qual-ity maintenance work it is recom-mended to have the car serviced andrepaired by LADA dealer. After thor-ough car washing regularly checkcondition of protective rubber bootsof front wheel drive joints, sphericaljoints and also protective caps ofsteering link joints. Damaged ortwisted boot or cap will cause ingressof dust, water and dirt to the jointwhich result in their early wear anddestruction. Therefore, damaged

boot or cap must be replaced with anew one and adjust the twisted one.

In condition of permanent caroperation in highly dusted areas airfilter element must be changed twotimes as frequently as specified inthe service book.

CRANKCASE OIL LEVEL

With the engine running, crankcase oil consumption is com-mon phenomenon. Amount of oilconsumed depends on driving styleand defined by engine load andcrankshaft rotational frequency. Oilconsumption is somewhat higher ininitial period of operation. Therefore, regularly, especially before long tripsit is necessary to check oil level in thecrankcase.

Oil level is checked when theengine is cold and not running, thecar on a flat surface. The oil levelmust be between marks «MIN» and«MAX» of oil gage 1 (Fig. 34). Oilrefilling, if necessary, is performedthrough filler closed with plug 2.

After refilling, oil level must bechecked no earlier than in three min-utes to allow the added oil portiondrain to the crankcase.

45

Fig. 34. Oil level check in crankcase

CAR MAINTENANCE AND ROUTINE REPAIRS

Page 48: and its versions - vaz¤. 538 User manual for LADA 4x4 and its versions JSC AVTOVAZ•TOGLIATTI•RUSSIA

For correct measuring of oil levelinsert oil gage 1 into locating hole asfar as will go.

ATTENTION!

Excess of oil level in crankcaseover «MAX» mark of oil gage 1 isinadmissible in order to preventoil surge through crankcase ven-tilation system. Oil will hit com-bustion chamber and be dis-charged in the air with exhaustgases. In cars equipped with ca-talytic converters oil combustionproducts might put the catalystout of operation.

COOLANT LEVEL

Coolant level must not be morethan 40 mm higher than «MIN» markapplied on the semitransparent tankbody (Fig. 35).

Level check and opening of tankplug for coolant replenishing is per-formed only with cold engine. Aftercharging the tank with coolant theplug must be screwed home tightlyto exclude ingress of dust.

ATTENTION!

To avoid burns do not openradiator plug of engine coolingsystem when cooling fluid is hot.

In cases when fluid level is con-stantly goes down and it has to bereplenished, check cooling systemfor leaks and have the fault eliminat-ed by LADA dealer.

46

Fig. 35. Expansion tank

BRAKE FLUID LEVEL

Brake fluid level in combined tank1 (Fig. 36) of brake and clutchhydraulic drive mounted on mainbrake cylinder is checked visually bymarks applied on the tank body ofsemitransparent plastic. With remo-ved cover 2, sensor 3 of brake fluidalarm level and new brake shoe padsthe level of brake fluid must be at«MAX» mark. Upon fitting of cover 2 sand sensor 3 the level of brake fluidmust be at lower edge of tank fillerneck. If brake and clutch hydraulicdrive is in good order, then fluid leveldrop in the tank is due to wear ofbrake shoe pads. Fluid level drop to«MIN» mark indirectly evidencestheir extreme wear. In this case it isnecessary to check condition ofpads rather than add brake fluid tothe tank because with new brakeshoes installed the level of fluid in thetank will rise to normal.

«Brake failure» indicator (refer to«Instrument cluster» section) is onwhen brake fluid level in the tankdrops below «MIN» mark which, withpartially worn or new shoe pads, isindicative of loss of tightness andfluid leak in the system. In this casereplenish the fluid only after havingsystem tightness restored by LADAdealer. With loss of tightness inclutch hydraulic drive «Brake failure»indicator is not switched on becauseseparation of clutch hydraulic drivecircuit and brake hydraulic drive cir-cuit is performed above «MIN» mark. When checking brake fluid level in

the tank also do not miss to checkproper operation of brake fluid alarmlevel sensor for which purpose presscentral part of sensor protective capfrom above – in ignition switched offcondition «Brake failure» indicatorred light must be on in the instrumentcluster.

During car operation give specialattention to condition of flexiblehoses as they are exposed to water, dirt, sand and salt. In case of minorcracks detected on hose outer coator occurrence of swelling whenapplying brake pedal the hose needsto be replaced with a new one.

It is necessary to change brakefluid in the system after three yearsof operation because it absorbsmoisture from environment whichresults in reduction of its boiling temperature. Moreover, water con-tained in the fluid may cause corro-sion of parts of working brake sys-tem. When bleeding air from thebrakes do not allow dropping ofbrake fluid level below «MIN» mark;when bleeding of air from clutchhydraulic drive do not allow droppingof brake fluid level to 15-17 mmbelow «MAX» mark.

47

Fig. 36. Brake and clutch hydraulic drive tank

Page 50: and its versions - vaz¤. 538 User manual for LADA 4x4 and its versions JSC AVTOVAZ•TOGLIATTI•RUSSIA

WARNING!

Brake fluid is toxic! Therefore,it has to be stored in tightlyclosed containers and beyond thereach of children.

Do not allow ingress of brake fluidto body paint coating – this maydamage the coating.

In option design version, asocket is provided for connection ofextension lamp on the bracket ofbrake and clutch hydraulic drivetank.

HYDRAULIC POWER STEERING

To ensure proper operation ofhydraulic power steering (installed in option design version) it is nec-essary to check routinely fluid level insteering booster tank 2 (Fig. 37).With cold hydraulic pump, engine notrunning, fluid level must be betweentwo notches of indicator in tankcover 1. Fluid level drop evidencessystem seal failure and needsmandatory checking and leak elimi-nation at loose connection pointswhich has to be performed by LADAdealer.

Noise from overflow valve opera-tion may occur at steering wheel endpositions. This is not a defect. Oncethe steering wheel is brought to mid-dle position the overflow valve isswitched off and the noise disap-pears.

WARNING!

Hydraulic power steering hasbeen charged with PentosinHydraulik Fluid CHF 11S-TLVW52137.

When performing systemmaintenance and repair it is pro-hibited to use other fluids and mixthem with the above fluid.

Elimination of faults and fluidrefilling must be performed onlyby LADA dealer.

BATTERY ELECTROLYTE LEVEL

You should check the level of theelectrolyte in the storage battery reg-ularly. The electrolyte level must be between MIN and МАХ marks (Fig. 38) on the semi-transparent bat-tery case. It is prohibited to use bat-tery when the electrolyte level isbelow the line with mark MIN.

If there are no MIN and МАХmarks on the battery case, or is thebattery case is opaque, then theelectrolyte level should be 10-15 mmover the separators top border.

WARNING!

Due to the fact that the elec-trolyte is a corrosive fluid and itsimpact harmful for You and thevehicle components, it is advis-able to carry out the storage bat-tery maintenance at the certifiedSSNEs.

Do not let the battery run low andrecharge it when necessary.

If the storage battery has elec-trolyte density and level indicator(«spyhole»), then the battery statuscan be determined by its colour:

«Spyhole» is green – electrolytelevel and density are normal;

low (below -30°С) it is recommendedto dismount the battery from thevehicle and store it in a warm place.

ATTENTION!

Never remove the storage bat-tery terminals with the ignitionon, as this can cause errors in theEECS controller operation or leadto failures of electrical products.

Keep a continual watch on thecleanliness of terminals and storagebattery clamps and check them forreliable connection. Remember thatterminals and clamps corrosion aswell as their poor connection can

49

«Spyhole» is black – it is neces-sary to charge the battery;

«Spyhole» is white – electrolytelevel is too low.

If the battery has no «spyhole»,the charging status can be deter-mined by measuring voltage on bat-tery terminals: voltage (with no load)must be not less than 12.6 V (whichcorresponds to 75% of charge attemperature 25°С).

You should regularly check thecharging status of the storage bat-tery in the following cases:

l If you use your car mostly forshort city drives.

l If you use your car with ambienttemperature below 0°C. Batterycapacity decreases at low tempera-tures. In cold seasons switch on onlythose electric devices that are reallynecessary.

l If you plugged to the vehicleelectric circuit any number of perma-nent electric consumer devices, e.g. clock or any other accessoriesinstalled at aftersales service.

l If your car is parked for a pro-longed time. In this case it is recom-mended to disconnect the batteryfrom the vehicle power system bydisconnecting the clamps. If theambient temperature is extremely

cause sparking in the poor contactlocation, which can lead to the vehi-cle electronic equipment failure.Generator operability check byremoving the storage battery clampswith the engine running is also notallowed.

During the storage battery instal-lation in the vehicle, make sure thatthe wires are connected in accor-dance with the storage battery polar-ity indicated on their lugs and termi-nals (the positive terminal is biggerthan the negative one).

During the storage battery chargedirectly in the vehicle, be sure to dis-connect it from the vehicle powersystem.

SPARK PLUGS AND OTHER IGNITION SYSTEM ELEMENTS

Spark plugs do not require main-tenance during time interval betweenreplacements. Keep the plugs pro-tected from impacts and mechanicaldamages. Additional replacement ofplugs is allowable.

Keep high-tension wires cleanand securely connected with sparkplugs and ignition coil.

WARNING!

Disconnection and removal ofhigh-tension wires from ignitionsystem elements must be per-formed only by pulling at the pro-tective cap. Wire removal bypulling at high-tension wire is pro-hibited.

WASHING FLUIDS

It is recommended to chargewash tanks of rear window, wind-screen and headlamp with mixture ofwater and special glass detergentfluid specified in the mixture pack-ing. Clean water may be used inwarm season.

Before the next regular replenish-ment of windscreen and headlampwash tank 1 (Fig. 39) check andclean, if necessary, filter mesh undercover 2.

For rear window glass washer, unscrew plug 1 (Fig. 40) of washertank and add the fluid.

TIRE SERVICING

Regularily check tire pressure witha pressure gauge (refer to Table 2).

Operation of tires with air pressurediffering from recommended valueleads to their early wear, and alsoimpairs car stability and drivability.

When continuous pressure drop isobserved in the tire check for air leakthrough tire valve core (inside). Incase of air leak tighten up the tirevalve core, and if this does not solvethe problem replace it with a newone.

If air pressure drops with a goodvalve core the tire needs repairing.

To avoid damaging of tire sealinglayer perform its removal and mount-ing using special attachments orhave it done by LADA dealer. To avoidwheel misbalance before flanging, make a mark on the tire with a chalkopposite the valve and then set thetire to this mark when mounting it.

After mounting of new tires besure to have the wheels balanced byLADA dealer.

BODY

The body represents a basic andthe most expensive car element. It isfabricated from advanced materialsand corrosion-protected with high-end protection means. Basis for anti-corrosion protection life has been setby the manufacturer; however, paintcoats and other protective coatingare susceptible to natural ageing andwear. Effectiveness of anticorrosionprotection and its durability dependon climatic, environmental, opera-tion, storage, maintenance and careconditions and timeliness of preven-tive measures taken.

Avoid excessive forces applied oruncontrolled movements of doors, bonnet and trunk lids leading todamages and/or attritions of doorsand body for which the manufactureris not held responsible. To avoidscratches appearing on body paint

coating do not remove dust and dirtwith dry wiping material. It is recom-mended to wash the car with lowhead water jet before the dirt getsdry with the use of a soft sponge andapplying automotive washing sham-poos which form films protecting thesurface against environmental expo-sures.

ATTENTION!

Do not wash the car with sodaand alkaline solutions nor withwaste/sewage waters or other flu-ids not designed for car washing.

Fix the drains of doors and sillsbefore car washing.

ATTENTION!

Due to variety of jet washerbrush unit designs available onthe servicing market car washwith brush jet washers may leadto loss of paint coating glossinessand impairing of its protectiveproperties. Therefore, it is advis-able that you preliminarily inquirewashing machine operator about

design, technical condition ofbrushes and severity of your carpaint coating exposure to washing.

In summer wash your car in theopen air and in the shade. If it isimpossible wipe the washed and wetsurfaces dry immediately after wash-ing as water drops form stains onpainted surface when drying out inthe sun. In winter, after washing thecar in a heated space wipe dry thecar body and seals before driving out as freezing of remaining dropsmight form cracks on paint coat and freezing-in of seals to body.

ATTENTION!

Do nor wash the car with ignition switched on.

When washing the car avoiddirect water jet hitting electric equip-ment parts, electronic devices, sen-sors and connectors in the enginebay. Look after condition of protec-tive boots covering detachable con-nections of electronic blocks andsensors. In case of moisture ingress

58

Page 61: and its versions - vaz¤. 538 User manual for LADA 4x4 and its versions JSC AVTOVAZ•TOGLIATTI•RUSSIA

blow the connectors with com-pressed air and treat them withrepellent to protect contacts fromoxidizing.

Carefully wash hemming areas ofdoors, bonnet, trunk lid, weld seamsand connections of engine bay, trunkand door openings as dirt accumu-lated in these locations will lead todestruction of protective-decorativecoating and corrosion of metal.

ATTENTION!

When signs of corrosionappear (including those in weldseams and joints) and also deteri-oration of paint coat (splits, scratches, abrasions) and otherprotecting coatings (splitting andabrasion of seal and primer) it isnecessary to apply to LADA deal-er to take actions toward elimina-tion of further corrosion develop-ment, restoration and repair ofpaint and protective coatings.

Timely taken measures againstcorrosion process developing onthe body and other car parts willextend its life and keep vendibility

for long. If you fail to take timelymeasures to eliminate corrosionprocesses on the body the manu-facturer bears no responsibilityfor further body condition of yourcar.

To enhance corrosion resistanceof the body special anticorrosionagent is applied in closed box-typehollows of sills, longitudinal mem-bers, crossmembers and otherunderbody elements. During caroperation it is necessary to have thebody provided with anticorrosiontreatment by LADA dealer during thefirst year of operation and routinelyonce a year following a processdeveloped by the manufacturer.

ATTENTION!

Exhaust system must bechecked after body treatmentwith anticorrosion agent by LADAdealer (catalyst, main and auxil-iary muffler) for absence of resid-ual agent on the above mentionedparts to prevent inflammation.

In the course of car operationunder body coating and paint coaton front and rear lower fenders isexposed to abrasive wear caused bygravel, sand and salt. This exposureresults in abrasion of seal and primer, bear metal surfaces get rusty. Therefore, routinely check conditionof coatings and timely restore dam-aged areas.

To keep painted surfaces glossy(especially for the cars laid up in theopen air) regularly polish them withpolishing pastes. These pastes covermicro cracks and pores appearing inpaint coating during car operationwhich prevents corrosion occur-rence under paint layer.

To keep body surface shiny forlong, do not leave the car continu-ously exposed to the sun and alsoavoid exposure body surface toacids, soda solutions, brake fluid andgasoline.

To prevent stains forming on thepaint coating under fuel tank coverafter ingress of gasoline wipe thesurface of with clean rags before andafter refueling. In view of bad envi-ronmental situation in some regionsthere are cases of aggressive action

59

Page 62: and its versions - vaz¤. 538 User manual for LADA 4x4 and its versions JSC AVTOVAZ•TOGLIATTI•RUSSIA

of individual components of environ-ment on car protective-and-decora-tive coatings. These attacks are evi-dent as rust-coloured scatter, localcolour variation of paint top coats, local deterioration of body enamelcoating. Rust-coloured scatter oc-currence is caused by deposition ofminute particles of metal dust sus-pended in the air on horizontal bodysurfaces which gets stuck to thebody with corrosion products duringmoistening with dew. Rust-colouredscatter can be removed with 5%solution of ethane diacide with addi-tion of a detergent and copious sub-sequent washing with clean water.

Local colour variations (stains) ofpain top coat and local deteriorationof body enamel coating result fromexposure to acid industrial dis-charges after their compoundingwith air moisture. Such attacks areeliminated, depending on severity,by polishing or repainting of thebody.

Wipe plastic parts with damp rags.To use gasoline or solvent for this isprohibited as plastic part will losegloss.

CAR LAYING-UP

During car operation give muchattention to car storage conditions. The most optimal conditions for carstorage are:

– vehicle shed where temperatureand humidity correspond to environ-mental parameters, continuous airmovement is available and the car isnot exposed to insolation and precip-itations;

– heated space (individualgarage) with temperature no lowerthan 5 0С and relative humidity of500%, equipped with suction-and-exhaust ventilation.

But if a heated space (individualgarage) has poor suction-and-exhaust ventilation while the car isused in winter period or laid up afterwashing without preliminary drying, this will multiply destructive effect ondecorative coatings/covers/trims.

When laying-up the car in vehicleshed for winter you should removethe battery and store it separately;drain water from window washertanks.

When preparing the car to laying-up for long period:

1. Wash the car and wipe the bodydry. Apply preservative on the body.

2. Discharge the battery com-pletely.

Car maintenance during laying-up(one or two times a month) amountsto the following: start and run theengine for 1-2 minutes having takencare about exhaust venting, checkoperation capability of the systemsand signaling devices, turn theengine off.
