Band participates in SJMEA Day at WWU
On April 14, the Storm Band percussionist section participated in our regional SJMEA Day of Percussion at
WWU. The two ensembles going to State Solo & Ensemble at CWU on April 27 performed, as well as our
Drumline. Our students watched and performed with the Drumlines from Bellingham, Burlington Edison,
Mt. Vernon, Wenatchee and more, and learned from a percussion guest artist specialist. Our kids represent-
ed well and had a great day!

Greetings Storm Families & Students, It’s amazing to me how quickly the sun lifts our spirits and helps everything we have in front of us seem to be a little bit lighter! We are heading down the home stretch – yet still have a lot to com-plete before we wrap up this year. We are heading into more Smarter Balanced testing next week for our sophomores. I also want to remind everyone May 7th kicks off our two weeks of AP testing and spring sports are quickly moving to their post-season competitions. Our staff were engaged in professional development courses Thursday (yesterday) to increase our capacity around many areas – including more resources around one to one technology instruction and social emotional learning. As stated above, there is a lot happening and we are going strong over the next seven weeks! Thank you for all of your support as we work on how best to serve you and our students. A lot of media attention goes to promising athletes when they select the college of their choice.
We want every student to receive as much attention and have that same feeling of importance
about their post high school plans. To celebrate we will have a Fill The Map party on Wednesday
May 2nd during THOR. All seniors are invited to post on the map and bulletin board their
intentions for attending all types of colleges, joining the military or participating in a specific GAP
year program. Please sign up in the Career Center so Mrs. O’Brien can make your college logo for
the map, then on Wednesday May 2nd during THOR all seniors are invited to place their name
under their college choice.

Hello Parents! AP tests are coming up in a few weeks so fees have been assigned to the students that haven’t paid for their tests yet. We require all AP students to take the corre-sponding exams in their AP classes but fortunately the district is paying ½ the cost (regularly $94 fee per exam) and students who receive free and reduced lunch support will have the cost of their AP exams waived. It would be greatly appreciated if your student could please bring cash or check to the ASB office to pay the $47 fee for each AP test they will be taking by April 30th. If you would like to pay the fees online (with a credit card) you can go through Skyward for a processing fee of $3.50 at https://onlinepayments.bellinghamschools.org and choose “Pay fees/fines” to process. Warner and his sister Prayer are destitute—and tiny. Their size is
not just demeaning, but dangerous: day and night they face
mortal dangers that bigger richer people don’t ever have to
think about, from being mauled by cats to their house getting
stepped on. There are no cars or phones built small enough for
them, or schools or hospitals, for that matter—there’s no point,
when no one that little has any purchasing power, and when salaried doctors and teachers
would never fit in buildings so small. Warner and Prayer know their only hope is to scale up,
but how can two littlepoors survive in a world built against them?

2018 JUNIOR SKI TO SEA RACE - PARKING MONITORS
May 19 7am to 4pm (different shifts)
The Junior Race presented by Haggen Northwest Fresh is an annual community event organized and hosted by the Bellingham Regional Chamber of Commerce. It is for participants who are in 3rd grade or older.
The Junior Race is celebrated on May 19th at Zuanich Point Park, consisting of running, hula hoop, biking, soccer and an obstacle course.
With an average attendance of around 1000 people per race, parking fills up quickly. Parking monitors will be placed at various locations near the Park.
Volunteers will be provided with meals + refreshment and a commemorative Jr. Ski to Sea Race t shirt

We need help with set up and tear down of this new, family-friendly summertime event-- The
Birchwood International Market. The market will feature cultural performances, food, mu-
sic, and art. Help celebrate the rich cultural diversity of Birchwood and come to build com-
mUNITY!
There are multiple 4 hour shifts available during the summer dates usually starting at 6pm.

The Community Boating Center is excited to offer a free kayak workshop to high school students this May and June. Students will learn about kayaking, water safety and the marine environment of Bellingham Bay! Free Kayak Workshop
WWU Youth Programs are still searching for applicants to fill their High School Volunteer positions this Summer. Students will work in a friendly, academic setting side-by-side High School stu-dents from Seoul, South Korea, serving as resources and mentors for the students as they practice their English and study STEM topics on campus. Students will gain: • Interview and hiring experience • Volunteer experience to build resume • Access to WWU staff/faculty and potential references • Familiarity with a college campus • Service learning hours Not only do the Korean students get great English practice, but volunteers have the opportunity to learn about other cultures, assist teachers in specialized STEM classes, and hone their social and communication skills. After-School Dinner Program Free for All Students 18 and Under
Bellingham Public Schools currently offers free hot dinner to all children 18 and under in the community. These meals are offered daily Mondays through Thursdays through June 6, 2018. Dinner is served from 5 to 6 p.m. at Shuksan Middle School, located at 2717 Alderwood Ave-nue (at the corner of Northwest and Alderwood).
Please note: Accompanying adults are charged $4. All meals must be eaten onsite in the Shuksan cafeteria and to go options are not available. Dinner will not be served on the following Thursdays that are middle school early dismissal days: Oct. 19, Nov. 2, 9, & 22 (Wed.), Dec. 7, Jan. 11, Feb. 8, March 8, April 26.
