T he Tour de France returned to Andorra in 2016, with portions of stages 9 and 10 held within the coprincipality. Stage 9 saw some of the most mem- orable moments of the race, with Dutch rider Tom Dumoulin claiming the stage victory in a driving rain- and hailstorm. Eventual winner Chris Froome (see Biographies) preserved his overall lead in spite of the challenging conditions, but two-time champion Alberto Contador was forced to abandon the Tour midway through stage 9. Andorra sent five athletes to the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, where the coprinci- pality hoped to win its first Olympic medal.
