Here the lyrics goes with the visual because he sang “swing and burns with my heart” and this goes with the video because it here in the image it shows him swinging his hand aggressively as though he’s feeling like he needs to come out of his shell and this is what he’s trying to express to the audience.

‘‘Everything that killed meEverything that killed me’’. . The lyrics and visuals in this scene are put together because they probably wanted the lead singer to look directly at the camera and say it so it makes it look more emotional and attractive for the audience to look at. This particular hand gesture that he’s doing is effective because it shows more artists appearance to the music video.

Beats - the cuts and beats go with the rhythm in order to make the video more in tune with the video and make it more entertaining for the audience. The visuals relate to the music for example when a depressing image like the one below is shown they would usually use the slow part of music then as it gets gradually faster then so will the images.

Here as the music get gradually faster then the beats get higher as the speed of the camera movements and the editing, cutting all increase in speed. This also proves Goodwin’s theory that Music can contradict/ amplify or illustrate.

Literal example: as the beat plays in rhythm to the sound of their clapping, stamping and jumping the ground starts to shake as though it was caused by the characters in the video.

He is looking directly at the camera because he wants to build a connection with the audience which in Goodwin's theory means Notions of looking plays on the idea of gaze and the way someone in particular is seen.

One of Goodwins theories of music videos was the notion of looking, this includes :

-Screens with screens-Telescopes-Eyes-Looking glass-Indirect/direct address-Voyeurism (looking at someone for pleasure, for example the 'Moulin Rouge' video)

The notion of looking at the camera will make the audience feel involved. There’s a direct gaze making the audience feel like the artist is talking to you or singing at you and that in some way are able to relate to it.

OneRepublic’s genre is pop rock/alternative rock. To show what kind of band they are they filmed their music video in a dark setting which goes with their music video and them as a band. Rock bands tend to be more dark in their videos and this will present them more as risk takers, brave and strong and this will attract audience in various ways as though they can also relate to it. I have also looked at other music videos of OneRepublics and they’re always wearing black.

This relates to Goodwin's theory about ‘narrative and performance’ when he mentions that narrative and performance work well together so it keeps the audience interested and entertained without losing interest.

Like a rock band they have instruments, a dark bold setting in an urban area. This goes with the music video because it shows them as artists and as though they’re not afraid of anything, which portrays them as being strong and muscular. Their genre characteristics is very similar to other rock videos as they also use the same type of settings and effects.

Mise en scene: dark colours like black, brown, grey or maroon show connotations of strong, dark and independent. being independent is something that I think is important in this rock band because the lyrics in this song is about letting yourself go and being yourself.

Star Image. The star image is a huge part of any act, this is how the artists appears to the audience in a variety of factors, for example what they are wearing, there personality and there overall iconography. This does not only help sell the artist but helps represent who they are and about them to there relating audience.

Music labels/audience expect close up form the start as it forms a narrative of the stars persona

Starting off closer to the centre of the camera perhaps showing Onerepublic’s comeback and as a star image trying to attract the audience about the band new song.

The genre of rock is usually associated with guitars and flashing lights. In Rock the mise en scene of the props is normally someone playing the instruments. The genre of rock normally has a band instead of just solo artists.

Overall I have seen how Goodwin’s theories are used in music video’s and how they act as an aid to the video to show its meaning and to present the artists in a way that will appeal to their audiences. I have also seen that even different genre’s of music carry the same characteristics proving that Goodwin's theories apply to all genre’s across the music industry
