M A G A Z I N E
This will be the 24th year of the tournament trail.
Time sure has flown. In our off-season I make sure our archives are up to date, and I’ve added three more names to our Hall of Fame.
I still remember getting the call from Georgia’s John Jones asking Deona and me to join him in the forma-tion of the SKA back in ‘91. I also remember well when a year later John asked me if we could let Jim Armstrong invest in our association. The SKA grew by leaps and bounds. Manufacturers got involved with both sponsor-ships and teams. It was the rank and file of the associa-tion who worked hard with the manufacturers to give us the product we now enjoy. In 2000 Sid Steverson came to Jim and I wanting to buy the Association. He ran the SKA for a little over a year, and then sold it back to a group of fisher people including Deona and me. His plate was just too
full to devote the attention needed to run this business. When you manage an asso-ciation as large as the SKA, it takes tremendous attention to detail. Working with spon-sors, tournament directors, and especially the fisher peo-ple, it’s a balancing act.
We’ve crowned so many great teams over the years that I decided that it was time to reinforce their achieve-ments. Some of these teams are still fishing, some retired, and some are no longer with us. It’s a great tribute to our past and certainly the future. It’s inspirational! Go to fish-
ska.com and click under Hall of Fame.
As you browse through the list be aware that North Carolina is still credited with the most champions, a true tribute to the quality of their fishermen.
For the younger teams com-ing into our sport, it is impor-tant to understand our past. The dedication of our fisher people, their investments, and their understanding to work with product development cer-tainly sets forth our future.
It’s also that time of year for the big Miami International Boat Show, February 13th–17th. (miamiboatshow.com) It’s the place where you can see new products and meet the manufacturers and our sponsors. It’s the place to see and be seen. I always recom-mend this event to you if you can find the time to attend. Make sure you wear your team shirts. We’ll be there!
Tight lines!—Jack

Have you ever stopped to think just how much money you have invested
in your boat? I can remember purchasing my very first center console way back in 1989. It was after moving to a shore commu-nity for a job with a new fishing magazine. I sold my last fresh-water bass boat, a honey of a Ranger that I really hated to part with, but there were bigger fish to catch and a vast new habitat
to learn and I was excited by the challenge. I had been bitten by the saltwater fishing bug years before, but now I would be living in an area where the wide open ocean was outside my front door. The boat was a brand new 231 Mako powered by a 225 Yamaha outboard, loaded with the latest Lowrance electronics. The price tag was a staggering $29,000! That was a lot of money in ’89, but today it will barely buy you
a large displacement outboard engine never mind the boat to put it on.
The cost of boats and boating in general has increased dra-matically since then. Purchasing a typical rig to compete in the Small Boat Class of the SKA will probably set you back $150,000 or more while an Open Class rig can easily push the $300,000 mark and surpass it. Boats in general are expensive regardless
of the size and intended use, but the cost of the boat/motor/trailer packages used for competition is staggering and it begs the ques-tion, “does your investment have the right insurance coverage?”
We’re talking about more than just adequate financial coverage, but coverage that matches the specific needs of a competition vessel and crew. There is so much more to buying insurance when you stop and think about the boat, engines, trailer and gear, but then add in long-haul towing, in many cases of an oversized vehicle, competition use and for some the need for coverage when the boat is being used for charter between tournament gigs. The insurance needs of the typical SKA competition member are more specialized and complex than those of the average boat owner so it only makes sense to work with an insurance provider that understands your situation, one who already provides insur-ance services to about 30% of your competition brethren in the SKA. In a nutshell, we’re talking about the folks at the National Boat Owners Association. NBOA not only understands your needs they also support the SKA through their sponsorship of the tournament trail for the past four years and they offer members

the “Premiere Angler” insurance package that provides all the cov-erage needed at a fraction of the cost of similar coverage through other providers.
NBOA is more than just a marine insurance provider it is also a club that offers its mem-bers a wide range of benefits. Varying levels of membership include NBOA dispatched emer-gency on-water towing anywhere in the United States with their dispatchers on duty 24/7- 365 days a year. Because SKA teams tow their boats they offer NBOA Roadside Assistance for your trailer should you experience a breakdown. Those alone are great benefits for competition members who travel regularly away from their home waters for tourna-ments. Members get special dis-counts at participating marinas and marine stores, savings on a wide range of products through the NBOA Ships Store, exclu-sive rates on boat financing and refinancing and more. But what separates NBOA from the pack is their expertise and 25 years of experience in the marine insur-ance field.
“NBOA is not married to a single insurance provider like some organizations and agen-cies,” said Mickey Mitchell, a senior insurance agent with NBOA. “We represent over ten different insurance providers, which gives us greater latitude in securing the insurance cover-age that is right for each boat owner’s needs. We start with a detailed profile of each member that includes the size of the boat, agreed upon value, travel and navigational requirements, the boat’s geographic location and other factors that will impact the coverage and ultimately the cost of a comprehensive policy. We then shop our field of providers
to obtain the needed coverage at the best possible price. Because a great percentage of SKA tourna-ments are located in the south Atlantic and Gulf coasts states rates can vary from company to company because of the exposure of risk as opposed to boats oper-ated on inland rivers, lakes or on the Great Lakes for comparison purposes.
“Insurance rates can also be influenced by the owner/opera-tor’s background and boating experience. Those criteria can include the number of years of boating experience, marital sta-tus, credit history, past claims history, and driving record. Why a person’s credit history might impact their boat insurance rates is something we are asked about frequently, but quite simply, stud-ies have shown that people with a questionable credit history are more apt to make fraudulent claims in order to benefit finan-cially at the insurance company’s expense. Insurance fraud has become a major concern to pro-viders and providers are justified in trying to reduce their expo-sure. The more successful they are at reducing fraudulent claims the more they can hold down rates for everyone. A boat owner’s driving record on the road can impact insurance rates for their boat, too. The theory behind it is that a person’s driving habits on land could very well be indicative of their behavior on the water.
“The size of the boat and the number of engines and horse-power will be a factor in not only insurance rates, but if you can find a company willing to write a policy to cover the ves-sel,” Mitchell explained. “Triple and quad engine boats create a real insurance challenge for most owners because some insur-ance providers simply will not
insure them or the ones that will add certain exclusions to those policies they are willing to write. Exclusions can impact overall theft coverage or include a requirement to have a GPS tracking system installed on the vessel. All these variables can make purchasing boat insurance a headache for SKA members and trying to identify those compa-nies that will write policies that cover all your needs is difficult. When you add in finding the best value for the needed coverage the whole process gets even more challenging. That’s why NBOA is equipped to rate an SKA mem-ber’s boat with several of their insurance providers to ensure the best coverage at the best price.”
In fact, NBOA agents have become the experts in providing SKA members with the very best coverage options and the most advantageous prices and it is not something that happened by accident, excuse the pun. About five years ago the company made the conscious decision to get involved with the SKA as a spon-sor/partner and to develop insur-ance programs that would meet your needs. That involvement came with a steep learning curve. They had to gather as much back-ground information as possible about SKA competition teams, the boats they own, and the unique needs they have in protecting their investment. It was quite
a challenge. Then they had to work with their providers to find those capable of meeting the SKA member’s insurance needs. The results have been a growing pres-ence for NBOA on the tournament trail, a steady upward curve in the number of SKA members who trust their boat insurance needs to them, and a growing synergy between the two organizations. The ultimate benefactors of that relationship are the SKA mem-bers who insure with them and experience their superior level of service, coverage, and the money they save in the process.
“NBOA came to the SKA and filled an important void for our members,” said Jack Holmes. “Most fishermen consider boat insurance an afterthought, but our members simply cannot. They have too much at stake and their needs are far more complex than the typical boater. NBOA understands our members and their insurance needs and makes getting the best policy at competi-tive prices fast and easy.” ■

SPICED RUM III REFLECTS ON NATIONALS
We had a great time in Biloxi. The Golden Nugget is coming along great compared to the years previous when it was the Isle. We had a
great trip out and back. Our main highlight of the trip was on our bait day we saw a whale shark with over 30 cobia around it and got some great GoPro footage, and of course to be with friends. I was very surprised to win the Director’s Award and want to thank you and the SKA for all that you do. It is very hard to run one tournament a year and you guys help run close to 50.
The year previous we had a lot of steer-ing issues but thanks to Latham Marine we did not have to worry one bit this year. We fished two days for bait and two days for the tournaments. During the Pros we did not get on the fish till 2pm and we only had an hour to fish. We weighed a 27lb & 35lb king which put us in seventh for the Pros. Our Contender boat with our triple Yamaha 300s did not skip a beat running 80 miles one way each day. I could not do what we do without our spon-sors and my crew. I would like to mention that we have a lot of new teams this year joining Division 10 and fishing Key West.
Team Sponsors: Tuppens Marine,Yamaha Outboards, Contender Boats, Latham Marine, Admiral Nelson’s Rum, Tito’s Vodka, Gill Media, Ocean LED, JL Audio, Ask the Advisors, Medical Center of the Palm Beaches, Gordon & Doner, Tamer Products, Juno Bait & Tackle, Sailfish Marina, New Port Cove Marina, J Camm Lures, United K9 Special Patrol.
P.S. I would love to see if we could maybe do Fort Pierce again or maybe an October Pro in Fort Pierce and a November Nationals in Biloxi and then switch them each year.

HOOKED UP FISHING TEAM PULLS OUT ALL THE STOPS AT THEIR FIRST NATIONALS!
Jeff Fletcher here, Captain of Hooked Up Fishing Team out of Pensacola Beach, Florida. My crew for Nationals this year was Ed Shelton (my father-in-law and boat co-owner) and Doug Kormondy. We fish a 23 foot Century w/ twin F150 Yamahas. 2013 was our second year participating in the SKA and our first year qualifying for Nationals. In 2012, we fished the Orange Beach tourney to get a feel for the SKA and in 2013 we fished Port Fourchon and the Alabama Deep Sea Rodeo. We knew that we would be up against great anglers and we realized that we are the new kids on the block so we set reachable goals for 2013. They were simple: 1) weigh a fish in every tourney that we fish. 2) Qualify and fish Nationals. We accomplished both of those goals but the road wasn’t easy. The day before going to the first tourney at Fourchon I wrecked the trailer while in the parking lot of the decal shop getting our boat name put on the side causing $1,300 in damage. A little two-foot concrete pole will win that battle every day. Luckily our friends at Rocky’s Trailers in Pensacola got us a new axle, brakes, etc. in less than 24 hours and we were rolling.
When I called NBOA to see what to do they said they would send an adjuster out within a week. I said, ”We are supposed to leave for an SKA tourney tomorrow.” My rep at NBOA said to get the trailer fixed so that we could fish the tourney and we will worry about the adjuster later. We could not have done it without them. I would recommend their insurance to any boater. At Fourchon the fiberglass holding our livewell tub together separated in the rough seas so we used an epoxy stick to keep water in the livewell for the tourney. The Alabama Fishing Rodeo was a great time. We were able to meet one of the Raymarine reps for the first time. We had just installed the new Raymarine A67 multifunction display and it worked great.
We headed to Biloxi on Wednesday afternoon to get the boat launched and docked in the slip in time to watch the Pros weigh-in. We stayed at the Four Points by Sheraton due to the fact that I travel for my regular job as a Nuclear Pharmacist and I had enough rewards points to get our whole team’s stay for the trip for free. The hotel bar and restaurant (GT’s) there
is excellent. Our favorite places to eat are the Half Shell Oyster House and The Hook Up. Michael Patricks’ sports bar and Morton’s at the Golden Nugget are both top notch as well. Since the tourney was postponed until Saturday, we hit the casinos hard Thursday night. We started and finished at the Beau Rivage. The slot machines seemed to like to keep our money but luck-ily the table games felt like giving some back. I broke even for the week give or take $100; I think the rest of the team did the same.
Before I talk about the fishing let me say something about the camaraderie of most SKA members. We met and became friends with so many people at Nationals. The
networking is enough to keep you busy all day. I was in Biloxi for work the week before the tourney and ran into Open Wide fishing team. I walked up and said, “Hey guys did you go out and catch bait today?” Their response, (remember at this point I’m a random guy at the bar wearing medical scrubs) “Are you fishing?” Once I told them that I had a team fishing the Mercury tour but not the Pro tour they opened up and we had a great conversa-tion and it turned out that we knew some of the same people from the SKA community. It truly is a small world. We met Frank from Ocean Tamer and bought one bag at Nationals and just last week I placed

an order with him for three more cus-tom bags to match our hull color and get our custom team logo on them.
In SKA, and fishing in general, everyone wants to talk about spon-sors. We know that being a new team we have to start small and work our way up. I networked hard at Nationals so that next year we can hopefully pick up some sponsorships. We landed what I will call our very first sponsor at Nationals this year. Being from Pensacola I had heard of Saltwater Mafia and had previously visited their website. While prep-ping the boat on Friday, Marvin Day of Saltwater Mafia was walking the docks and stopped to say hello. I think he was surprised that I already knew who he was and what kind of boat he owns. We ended up talking for quite some time and I told him that we were new to the tournament series and that we did not have any sponsors or logos to wear at weigh-ins. I told him that if he had a few shirts that we would wear them for him at weigh-ins to hopefully get him some publicity. He loved the idea and in a few minutes we had new team shirts and our first sponsor-ship as I see it. So a big thank you to Marvin Day and Saltwater Mafia for supporting us and for having a booth at SKA Nationals. We will certainly be staying in touch.
Now on to the fishing. It was a brisk morning with a stout east wind and seas were an easy three to five feet with a short four-second period and a rough sea state. I had heard some teams speak about running behind Chandeleur Islands to hide from the wind, but I had also heard that there were specific coordinates needed to get out from behind the islands and that it is a dangerous area to navigate if unfamiliar. Keeping these things in mind we headed out from the Small Boat checkout and had the Raymarine C120 set for the Horseshoe. We used Ship Island Pass and headed south. I watched as many small boats all headed east/southeast. It didn’t take long to real-ize that it was going to be a long day. I can’t remember what speed we were running but in those seas I knew we would not have more than 30 minutes to fish if we battled it out all the way to the Horseshoe plus I had promised my wife that I would bring my father-in-law who co-owns the boat and myself back home safely. Since we were pushing the limits of safe navigation I made the decision to change course and head to MP 108s where I knew good fish had been caught in the past and it would give us three hours of fishing time instead of 30 minutes.
We arrived to the rigs and had our
first line in the water around 10:30am and bang it was on. We caught fish after fish for the first two hours. I don’t think we ever got more than two lines in the water before a hun-gry king would take off running. We put what I thought was a 30lb fish in the box real early and started releas-ing a lot of ten to 20-pound kings. Around 12:00 our biggest fish of the day hit a large ribbonfish on the star-board downrigger and the battle was on. Based on the GoPro video, the fight lasted about 20 to 30 minutes and the fish made multiple good runs. The only equipment failure on this trip happened in my garage before we left Pensacola. The threads on my 12ft tourney gaff had got-ten out of line and would not screw together so instead of our standard 12ft gaff we were armed with an eight- and 6-foot gaff. When the fish surfaced I could see it was belly hooked, it was also the largest king our team had ever had boatside. She was just beyond reach of the 8ft gaff when I had my first good shot at her. She circled around and I went for the next shot and was short by what had to be under a foot. When she saw the gaff she made a run and the hook popped free, we were devastated. I’m not sure how big it was but it was easily 40+. At this point I wasn’t sure how many small boat teams
had made it out that far and I knew we had just lost a good fish that would have been landed with our 12ft gaff. Around 1pm the bite turned off and we tried a little rig hopping but couldn’t find any big ones. We headed back to MP108 to box a quick second fish for our aggregate. We were running short on time so we kept the next one we caught which turned out to only be 12lbs.
I turned the bow to the west and used my Raymarine C120 to choose a spot to cut behind Chandeleur. We took a beating on the way out and we never saw any other boats until we made it to MP108 so I assumed that all the teams were going behind Chandeleur so that’s what we were going to do. A small storm had popped up right on top of us and the seas were nasty. I could hardly see to navigate. As we were approaching the shallows of Chandeleur the water became muddy and our bottom machine had stopped working so I had no idea what our depth was. It turns out that the latch on our trans-ducer broke off. I started to get very worried that we were going to run aground and then the three-foot seas would topple us over and that would be it. I decided to stay on plane since the GPS was showing deeper water within a half mile. Luckily we made it across. We will never know how shal-

low it was but based on the muddy water it couldn’t have been more than two to three feet deep. Since we were not familiar with the islands we headed west about five miles past the islands to safe water then turned to the north. I recalculated our path and our GPS said 1 hr 45 min to the pass at our current speed of 20kts. I looked at the clock and it was 3:30 pm and I knew we were not going to make it.
The seas in Chandeleur Sound were still a solid two to three feet and the wind had shifted NE. I stopped the boat to get a drink and discuss the plan with the crew. We knew that we didn’t have the winning fish on board so I gave the guys the option to take it slow and not weigh any fish, or pick up the pace and get beat up some more in order to make weigh ins by 5pm. We were all in favor of trying to beat the clock just for the fun of it. We came to Biloxi to weigh fish and in the back of my mind was Marvin Day of Saltwater Mafia who I had promised that he would see us at the scales in his shirts. So we powered up our Yamaha 150s and I was about to find out what our Century boat was made of. We ran roughly 30 to 35 kts for the next hour and a half in what was a two-to three-foot head on sea. The closer we got to Biloxi the calmer the water got
and the harder I pushed my vessel. When we neared the pass I could see all the other boats converging on the pass and I knew we had a chance at making the deadline.
I opened up the engines to wide open throttle and we were having a blast. I’ll never forget the Under Armour boat passing us like we were standing still with their quad Mercury 300s. We rounded the corner and checked into the harbor at 4:58 pm. While we knew we were not going to win the tournament we had just won a small battle against the open ocean and we were going to be on stage to weigh our fish at our first SKA National Championship…and it won’t be the last. While waiting in line I called my best friend Will Coley, who fished with us all year but fished on his regular team from Georgia for Nationals, to see how they had done since we had a friendly $100 wager. Unfortunately, they had lost a lower unit and did not get to fish but that meant by us beating the clock we had not only won our $100 wager, but we also have the bragging rights that goes with it.
So until next year…tight lines!

Team Ocean Isle Fishing Center has captured many major SKA kingfish titles while showcasing an amazing
lady angler in Amy McMullan.
LadyLadyLadyLady
A late fall giant kingfish bite was taking place off from Ocean Isles, North Carolina with lots of smoker size kingfish weighing in the 40-pound class testing even the most skilled king mackerel
angler. The year was 2005 and it was late November, the time of year when a giant kingfish run typically stages off of North Carolina’s coast. Many veteran king mackerel fishermen believe some of the Southeast Atlantic’s very best king mackerel fishing takes place in this time frame.
With kingfish stacked up offshore in their home waters, Captain Brant McMullan and wife Amy decided to take a shot at landing a couple of International Game Fish Association line class king mackerel records.
“Amy and I knew there was a big opportunity in breaking the cur-rent women’s line class record for 8-pound line and I was shooting for the 4-pound men’s line class kingfish record as well,” explained Brant. “The current women’s line class record for 8-pound line was 41 pounds which was set in 1995. The current men’s line class record for 4-pound line was 38 pounds, 12 ounces and was set in 1997.”
“I spooled one of our kingfish reels with 4-pound Stren fishing line and another kingfish reel with 8-pound Stren fishing line. Setting out on Sunday we arrived at the big kingfish bite setting out two light tackle outfits, the 8-pound class and the 4-pound class live bait kingfish rigs. Right away monster kings blasted our kingfish rigs and we were hooked up fishing with super light kingfish tackle. Amy and I were literally holding kingfish rods with reel drags screaming with little abil-ity to apply any rod pressure. We soon found out just how light 4- and 8-pound test lines really are! My fish broke off quickly, however Amy held on tight to her fast running kingfish, fighting her fish for a solid five minutes before her 8-pound kingfish line parted,” Brant related.
From left to right Caroline, Amy and brother-in-law Barrett McMullan are pictured with Amy’s 56.28-pound kingfish that helped Team OIFC win the 2013 SKA National Kingfish Championship for an unprecedented three times!

Amy McMullan is pictured with her Wom-en’s IGFA 8-pound line class world record king mackerel weighing 44 pounds. Amy was fishing with her husband Brant McMullan out of Ocean Isle, N.C. when she landed her world record kingfish in 2006.

Brant and Amy McMullan once again deployed live baits rigged to four- and eight-pound test kingfish tackle. Two more giant kingfish took their live baits and made speedy runs which once again parted their super light fishing lines.
“It was quite the learning experience to find out what our fishing lines could actually handle and just how fragile these light lines become when hooked up to 40-pound plus kingfish,” Brant said. “We soon learned that by pointing the rod tip directly at the kingfish when it ran, the amount of tension on the fishing line was greatly reduced.”
“Once again Amy deployed her live bait rigged to 8-pound test fishing line and within minutes a smoker king skyrocketed on her live bait right behind our boat. I knew Amy’s kingfish was a good one, but the question was would it weigh 41 pounds? Amy fought her light line kingfish through several line smoking runs and finally reeled her light tackle king mackerel following a 45-minute fight. Amy’s big king came up to the boat completely exhausted allowing me to reach down and grab the tail of the tired kingfish and lift it into the boat without gaffing Amy’s king-fish,” Brant concluded.
After placing Amy’s big kingfish on ice, Brant concentrated on break-ing the men’s 4-pound IGFA kingfish line class world record.
“I hooked and fought several other kingfish to the boat including 25- and 35-pound class kingfish,” Brant said. “None however were worthy of taking home to challenge any current IGFA world records. Later that evening we weighed Amy’s kingfish on Ocean Isle Fishing Center offi-cial certified scales which read 41.4 pounds on the digital scales mak-ing the weight 41.6 pounds. Unofficially Amy’s kingfish was eligible for the IGFA women’s king mackerel 8-pound line world record.”
After submitting all of the proper paperwork, photos, and fishing line to the IGFA, Brant soon found that Amy was actually fishing with 6-pound fishing line on her kingfish reel and not 8-pound fishing line. The current six pound line class record for women was 43 pounds, since the line tested as a true 6-pound line, and even though the fish was big enough to take the 8-pound line class record, the IGFA put Amy’s kingfish under the 6-pound test line class. This resulted in Amy’s big kingfish failing to qualify for a current IGFA record.
“You can say that Amy and I were a little upset at the time,” Brant said. “We waited an entire year until ideal kingfish conditions pre-sented themselves again for catching world record class king mackerel. On November 1, 2006, Amy and I once again set out from Ocean Isle to establish a new 8-pound line class world record for king mackerel. This time we had filled our kingfish reels with IGFA rated fishing lines so we knew exactly what line class fishing line we were fishing with.”
“Just as she had done before, Amy hooked and landed several king-fish in the 30-pound class before hooking and landing her record breaking king mackerel that weighed 44 pounds on 8-pound class fish-ing line. The IGFA existing women’s 8-pound line class record was 41 pounds and was easily beaten!”
Amy McMullan’s name can be seen in the International Game Fish Association record book as the current World Record women’s holder for king mackerel in the 8-pound line class.
“We haven’t taken the time to chase the 6-pound record, but Amy has mentioned her interests on occasion,” Brant said. “Barrett and I have both had bouts using both 2- and 4-pound class lines but the facts are that the light fishing line can barely hold the kingfish bait, let alone the kingfish you need to catch!”
Also keep in mind that during the 2013 Southern Kingfish Association National Championship held in Biloxi, Mississippi, Amy McMullan fished aboard team Ocean Isle Fishing Center in rough sea conditions and landed the tournament’s second largest king mackerel weighing 56.28 pounds. OIFC has won this same event an historic three times! Team members include patriarch Rube McMullan, sons Brant and Barrett, daughter-in-law Amy, and grandchildren Brayden and Caroline.
Filling your kingfish reel with 400 yards of 8-pound fishing line and using the very same kingfish rod that you typically fish with 20- to 30-pound fishing line will work just fine when challenging 8-pound
and existing IGFA line class records. If you are uncertain about the line class that you are fishing with, the IGFA also pretests fishing lines for its members at a price of $30 per line sample.
To strengthen your fishing line, the IGFA allows a double fishing line which has to consist of the same pound test fishing line that you are using for an IGFA record. If you are fishing with 2- to 20-pound fishing line, you are allowed a 15-foot double line. The length of the double line includes the knot or swivel that the double line is made of or attached to. For line classes over 20lb, a 30-foot double line is allowed.
The leader may consist of either wire or monofilament and the over-all length is measured from the knot to the end of the lure or hooks. Again, a 15-foot leader is allowed when fishing with 2- to 20-pound fishing line. A 30-foot leader is allowed when fishing with lines testing over 20lbs.
The combined length of the double line and leader shall not exceed 20 feet when fishing with 2- to 20-pound fishing line and 40 feet when fishing with line testing over 20lb.
Treble hooks are not allowed by the IGFA, but you can make up king-fish leaders utilizing two single hooks. The eyes of both hooks may not be less than a hook’s length apart as well. The eyes of both hooks may not be more than 18 inches apart. Also, both hooks must be attached to the live or dead bait and are not dangling or swinging.
To make a double hook kingfish leader first attach a 20-lb black bar-rel swivel to the tag end of your double line using a palomar knot. Next attach a 3-foot section of #3 coffee colored piano wire to the remain-ing side of the barrel swivel using a haywire wrap. At the tag end of the wire leader haywire wrap a 6/0 VMC #7265 live bait hook. Next a second live bait hook is haywire wrapped to the eye of the nose hook using a short length of #4 coffee colored piano wire. The length of the stinger wire is adjusted so that the second hook can be embedded just in back of the anal and in front of the tail of the live or dead bait. Keep in mind that the distance between the eye of the nose hook and eye of the stinger hook has to be longer than the length of the hook and not more than 18 inches.
Finally, most king mackerel fishermen dread missed hook ups when employing single hooks. However, when using a double hook kingfish leader, kingfish are more apt to return for a second strike. Simply free line your wounded live bait back into the water column for that second chance.
Playing giant kingfish on light lines takes patience, use a light 1-lb drag allowing the kingfish to run while pointing the rod tip directly at the speedy king mackerel. Enjoy the light tackle kingfish challenge by joining the IGFA. Visit www.igfa.com. ■

On November 6, 2005 Amy McMullan landed a would-be 8-pound line class IGFA women’s king mackerel record that weighed 41.6 pounds, however her line tested as 6-pound weight resulting in the IGFA placing her kingfish in the 6-pound line class.

And, the Survey Says...
Survey Responses
Regarding 2014 Tournaments
At the end of the season, we ask for your input through an online
survey. This is your chance to tout your favorite event and tell us what’s your opinion on others. We do listen and pass this info on to events.
Most of the responses were very well thought out and honest con-structive reports. Of course, you have your favorite events; even we, being the sanctioning body, have ours. That’s just human nature. But let’s all remember one thing—volunteers who don’t fish or tournament fish produce most events. It’s their job to put on as good an event as they can, use honest, reliable numbers to figure payouts, promote the event well in advance to garner local partici-pation, and make it as easy and as much fun as they can for the participants.
As you notice, if you go to our website, we work very hard get-ting tournament dates by the first of the year for everyone’s convenience. Sometimes events in a division just don’t get sepa-rated enough. We try, but every now and then you get back-to-backs. Remember, the schedule is not done yet, just the dates we already have.
Most people responding were mixed between check-outs and no check-outs.
Some think there is no room for the weekend warriors in our sport. They have no chance and anyone who adopts that think-ing is right. You don’t have a chance! That is until you adopt the philosophy or mindset that so many before you have adopted. Like anything else in life, you must earn the right to be admired by your peers. Nothing in life is easy especially in this sport. But, stop and think for just a moment. How do you think these top name teams earned their reputation? I
can tell you because I’ve watched them grow. How does Mark Henderson get so many sponsors? And how, since ’91, have so many earned the titles we all cherish?
Pay attention to detail, ask questions every chance you get, go to seminars, read Terry Lacoss’s Mastering King Mackerel book, make sure your tackle works including new line, and the most important—make sure your boat and motor or motors are serviced when it’s time so that they are in great shape. The gear doesn’t have to be new, but free of potential problems. If I were a newbie I would have done anything I could have done to get to the Nationals. Not just to fish the Nationals but to hang with the guys, walk the docks, and talk to people who have the repu-tations you cherish. I’ve never met one who wouldn’t spend time with you to help you move up the ladder. Always remember it’s easier to quit than succeed.
DIVISION 1We know that Onslow Bay and Sneads Ferry were back-to-back. I think that has been corrected. One complaint that I’ve heard before, a member pre-registers for an event so he or she doesn’t have to come to the event the eve of the tour-nament. But they have to come because of the $10 SKA Registration Form. When we sell sponsorships, part of the benefit to the manufac-turer is they can pick and choose any event they want to come to, have meet and greets, and talk their products up. You and pos-sibly many more don’t come so
we, and the sponsors get shafted. We have lost sponsors because of this. I’ll use Mercury for an example: Mercury gives you five 200hp outboards as prizes, not counting divisional events that get prizes like this also. That’s over $70,000. Do you think they and the others deserve your con-sideration in just showing up? Plus they give more dollars to help pay for Angler magazine each month. At the Nationals this year, sponsors gave away $232,000 in prizes alone includ-ing captain’s bags. When you add in the cash like big payouts, why didn’t you come to the final event after working hard to qualify? This is not just about you but all of us. All told we gave away, counting the prizes, $315,000.
Another team wanted satellite weigh-in stations. On big events that may have merit but, and I’ll go way back in time, remember Donnie Griffin? He did the Sun-Fun events in South Carolina. Groups of anglers jumped up and down to do a satellite weigh-in in North Carolina. He tried to
appease them and the results: gone!
Yes, there were other problems but that was the one that
stood out the most. The Sun-Fun was
a big pay-out event.
Raleigh got beat up pretty bad in responses for losing sight of what the tournament represented. Too much party and not enough attention to details.
Troopers got real high marks,
as did Sneads Ferry. Onslow Bay got chastised for low payouts and not doing awards right after the event at the weigh-in site.
Another response was geared toward SKA losing events and said we used to do 12 events per
year. Well, for North Carolina, we’ve always had five events in Division 1 and five in Division 9. The number of events was set many years ago to five per divi-sion. This gave the teams that couldn’t fish more events a shot to win the title. In Division 9, we have four and we’re still work-ing on the other one. We don’t have the ABKMT because the promoter and the Volunteer Fire Department couldn’t come togeth-er. We’re working to see how we can resolve this issue.
Swansboro always started the season but was just too early in the season. A fall date was worked out. But they never attracted the number of boats they did when times were good or spring numbers. Finally, they chose to go to a limited entry event with a high dollar entry fee. This eliminated us. I always enjoyed their tournament book, one of the best in our sport, and helped them raise a lot of money for Rotary projects.
DIVISION 3Not a lot of pros or cons in Division 3. Fishing for Miracles
February 2014 | ANGLER www.FishSKA.com 23February 2014 | ANGLER www.FishSKA.com 23
was of course the best rated. Only one complaint: One member complained about charging extra for beer and says his team won’t return. Please tell me he’s just joking!
Kings for Vets was great; every-one who responded does not want it to go away. We agree. Right now we only have three events with dates and yes we are trying to spread them out.
Rumble in the Jungle is still being worked on. Too bad last year’s weather was so bad but the idea of a Division 9 – Division 3 shoot-out was a super idea. Rivalries go a long way to spurn good competition. This could grow into a super event!
Beaufort got the lowest rating and really needs work.
Please remember that most events we sanction are charity driven, promoted by organi-zations that raise money for local charitable causes.
DIVISION 4Most were happy in Division 4 and yes we all know, even the promot-ers, that the Coastal Empire event was too early. We agree, and so did the promoters. A later date has been arranged.
Payouts came up more and more. Yes we’d all like better payouts but don’t you think we’d have better payouts if the spon-sors knew they were going to get a return on investment. No smart businessperson is going to sup-port an event without a return. Would you? If your answer is yes then put up the money. Don’t think for one minute our spon-sors would still be on board with us if they didn’t get that return.
All in all Division 4 gets high marks from you.
DIVISION 5 Division 5 unfortunately is all about the Greater Jacksonville event. From my perspective I really liked the new format and think it took a big risk to make the changes but they pulled it off. It was broken, you knew it and so did we but it’s still an event all the anglers in Jacksonville should be proud of. For years all I’ve heard is how bad the payouts are and they keep too much money. Some of that may be true but being in the tournament business it really wasn’t. This is a big fun-draiser for a lot of local charities
and this time the competitors for-got what this event is all about. The Alabama Deep Sea Rodeo is and has been all about the chari-ties since its inception and they still get their thousand boats and very little cash is given out, just prizes. It’s about the commu-nity!!! If you fish this event for the money, it’s sad. This is your chance to give something back and earn the respect of your fel-low anglers for winning the big-gest and best tournament in the state. The new format needs a lit-tle tweaking and I know that will happen. So quit the grumbling, go have some fun, and remember the new board will get it done. If they don’t I’ll be the first to chas-tise them. Remember too, instead of threats get involved.
I received a lot of, “we need a single engine
class.” I
think you’re right, but for the tournaments and us, how many boats would we get? You can’t do that class without support and, remember, where do the promotional dollars come from? We’re working on it and some events are adding it to their tournaments in Division 1. When we changed the Small Boat Class from Class of 23, the only thing we changed was waterline length to 23’11”. Has the industry capitalized on it? Absolutely. We now have advertised 27-foot boats in the class. Was it the right thing to do? Absolutely. Because people with boats that say are true 21’ or 22’ boats have not been fishing with us for many, many years. This brought a lot of attention to the class and it’s growing. The movement is strong in North Carolina. Remember, in the Open Class we have a lot of teams fishing 31-foot boats com-peting with boats to 39 feet. No difference!
DIVISION 6Division 6 respon-dents said that a lot of improve-ments have occurred at Gator’s. We agree. Too many responses from people who continue to compare King of the Beach to the other events. KOB is a very well run event and one we would very much like to be involved in but as you know, when fish can be brought in by car or truck, that’s a no-no with us. People liked the NBOA events.
DIVISION 7Division 7 had a lot of praise for Anthony Toups. They loved his events. Interesting enough, some would like to see SKA just sanc-tion Friday and Saturday in the ADSFR because of fuel costs. Hmmm! Also, one member said we should issue a challenge: Every team needs to bring one other team to fish at least one other event, preferably at the start of the season. GREAT IDEA! This would work in other divisions also. Members were divided on check-outs.
There was very little response from Division 8 but Milliken’s took a big hit. We still like the venue and are in discussions with them now.
Check-outs or no check-outs are still being debated as are bound-aries overall.
DIVISION 9Division 9 responders held Brant’s tournaments as the best. The Got-Em-On didn’t do too well. Terrible weather didn’t help. Many say that since Ty left, the focus of the
event has changed.Not much on
the others.
DIVISION 10In Division 10, Key West got real high marks, but Jamie Bunn’s events were obviously the best and rightfully so. One person responded that his weigh-in is not
photo friendly. I agree.
With two weigh-in spots we cer-tainly can’t be in two places at one time. But in defense of that, remember that South Florida is just not friendly to any event. It’s tough just to get a place to do an event. I suggest you carry a disposable camera with you or use your phone, take a couple of shots, and send them to us right after the event. I know that’s probably not the answer you’re looking for, but we really need some help on this.
Finally, remember that every event you enter is not always the same as your last event. When you don’t do well we all seem to find little things that weren’t just right. Do well and it’s the best event we’ve ever fished. Let’s take another approach this year. When you do your schedule for the year, why not pick up the phone and call the tournament director, “Do you have posters or tournament brochures I can help you pass out?”
We had a real problem this year in which many captains complained that they had a hard time keeping a team together. You need to find ways to change that. Too many captains called the SKA to inform us that even though they qualified and want to come, their team members told them they couldn’t come because of who knows what. That’s a disgrace if true. A man is only as good as his word. Besides, who doesn’t want to be the best in the country? Don’t think you can compete? Then you’d better read the Championship stories again. The top names in the sport don’t always win!
Please keep the responses com-ing in. Better yet, instead of wait-ing until the end of the year to let us know your thoughts, email your remarks to me after each event. I can assure you I read every one!
Thanks,Jack & Bobby

Tyler KeslerTyler Kesler earned Top Junior honors for the entire Pro series with
590 points fishing on Robert Wiggins’ Yamaha powered Contender,
Rock Doc. Tyler and the Rock Doc team started the season with a
second place finish at Division 3’s Beaufort Water Festival earning
them 160 Pro points. After several tournaments without a high finish,
the team rallied at the Rumble in the Jungle KMT for a third place
finish which awarded them an additional 160 points. Finally, the team
of Wiggins, Dowell Coker, Chris Lacey, and Holly and Tyler Kesler
finished in eleventh place in the Yamaha Pro Championship with a
two fish aggregate of 68.22 which made Tyler Top Junior Angler in the
Yamaha Pro Championship. Earning second place overall was Luke

Marcus Kennedy, Mike Ward, Brett Rutledge, Max Williams, Robert
Young, and Tyler Kennedy will go into the SKA record book for winning the 2013 Professional Kingfish Tour Team of the Year honors. Kennedy’s team, based in Mobile, Alabama, earned 800 total points through their best five days on the water and led the field by 20 points over second place Penny-Less from South Florida going into the Yamaha Pro Tour Championship event in Biloxi.
The team earned 170 points at the Kajun Sportsman’s first day and added another 150 points on day two at their season opener in June. Then they moved to the Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo in July and added 110 points for day one and 180 points for day two. Plus they still fished for the coveted Master Angler award in the largest saltwater tournament in the world and achieved that honor. More than 3,100 anglers competed for this honor.
In the West Delta event in Venice, Louisiana they added another 20 points for day one.
They then fished the Gorenflo’s event in Biloxi and picked up another 20 points and finished the division earning 130 points at the Kajun King Classic.
They ended their Division 7 run with 780 points.
Marcus and the team went to the final event in Division 6—Gator’s Fall. He fished this event last year and had added Arik Bergerman to the team there and did very well. An outcry came from the locals thinking that Arik was why the Kwazar team did so well. While Arik is an extremely talented fisherman himself, it wasn’t the case. Marcus has lots of numbers from the area when he used to fish the Arthur Smith events plus a few Division 6 events, winning one of those many years ago. So back he came this year, had no locals on board, and the team persevered win-ning second place and of course another 170 points.
The team now had a first place, five fish aggregate of 800 points to carry into the Yamaha Pro Tour Championship event where they added 380 more points to win the Team of the Year title with 1,180 points, 280 points ahead of second place.
Now, before Marcus jumps all over me, let’s give credit where credit is due. First, Marcus is a superb angler with many, many titles. But all of the members on the team, including Marcus’ son Tyler, are accomplished fisher-
men on their own. They make up the perfect team. They’ve worked together for many years and actu-ally complement one another.
I truly believe that this team can still win more titles! I should also add that Marcus and the team did not win the actual Yamaha Championship event in Biloxi, Bad Company did. But they only lost that title by a frac-tion of a pound (.13 to be exact). Kwazar is the 2013 Team of the Year and three of the team mem-bers, Max Williams, Mike Ward, and Robert Young were our Top Senior Anglers overall for the Pros. I don’t think that any Pro fisherman would disagree with my assessment of this team. They are the Champions and we salute them!
Intense won second place honors this year after carrying the number one honor all year thanks to their 2012 Team of the Year win.
Most people who don’t compete in the Upper Gulf understand the rivalry between Neal Foster and Marcus Kennedy. They are great friends off the water but when it’s time to tournament fish, they are bitter rivals. I truly believe that this rivalry is what drives both teams. Remember, rivalry in any sport heightens competitive
spirits.Foster, Mark
Collier, Brian Keevan, and Jason Hebert started the season at the Kajun Sportsman in Fourchon, Louisiana where they earned 150 points on day one and added 170 points on day two. The exact same score Kwazar had. But then Foster’s team had three 20-point days.
In the West Delta event on day two they picked up 170 points. At Gorenflo’s they took another 20 points for fish-
ing the event. At the other Kajun event in Orange Beach they found another 150 points. They carried 660 points into the Championship 140 points behind Kwazar. They still were in a position to make up the deficit but then tragedy struck. Neal had a very serious accident breaking his shoul-der pushing bone thru skin. I won’t go into details, but it was extremely serious enough to give a big advantage to Kennedy’s team. Still the Intense team earned 240 more points fishing in the Championship event.
I still don’t know how he endured the pain but he had the support of his great team and they never quit. I would have been sitting on the hill. The Intense team settled for second place overall in the Pro series this year with 900 points. Congratulations to this great team and their efforts for second place honors. I can’t wait to see how next year’s rivalry shapes up! You better have your game face on if you expect to win!
The Under Armour/Caliente team of Arik Bergerman, Eric Sidor, Jeff Houser, Joe Medolla, Glenn Carr, and Randy Keys from Florida’s west coast, had a good season earning third. They had

620 points. They had four good point events, Key West on day one for 140 points, the Gator’s spring event for 170 more points. Their other two days were Fort Myers where they added 130 more points, and finally 160 points at the Kajun event’s day one. They carried 620 points into the Championship where they added another 260 points for 880 total points. That one event where they scored 20 points for fishing an event cost them second place. I know, anything but first is not a win but the point is, in this sport every point counts.
There are a lot of distractions in Division 6, where this team shines, but I know that this team deserves being in the top five in the country. From that point it’s anyone’s battle. If Caliente scores big in Key West this year, they will be in a good position to earn the top spot. I wouldn’t bet against them!
Penny-Less had a good season, earning 780 points, carrying them into the Championship. They had a great season in Division 10 where the competi-tion is truly fierce. But then they couldn’t make the Pro
Championship work earning only 45 points. Remember they won the National Championship last year with Foster winning the Yamaha Pro Championship. I know that no team can win every event they enter but if there’s one team this could apply to, it’s them.
Mike Wood, David Linsinbigler, Alex Burgess, and James Wood are held in the highest regards in Division 10 and had everyone talking about them after last year’s National Championship win. They need to go to the Upper Gulf during the regular season next year just to help them master Gulf fishing.
Ron Mitchell has two Angler of the Year titles and everyone thinks he and his Bandit team should be good for a couple more titles. I agree. Ron spun a hub and had to come in but did not get it fixed. He and his team still earned fifth overall and remem-ber he only garnered 40 points for just entering the Championship and still ended fifth. They ended with 810 points only 90 out of second. Could they have won it all? Probably not this year. It was Kennedy’s year!
The Get Layed team of Fred Watkins Jr., Ken Jansen, William Todd Gardner, Sherman Butch Smith, and Kayla Williamson earned sixth place with 800 total points. They have the small-est boat in the Pro Tour but had the highest three-fish aggregate in Division 7 this year. They ended with 800 points and had a 60-pound king to their credit this year. They made a mistake by going to the spot which held fish all year for them on day one but came up empty. They re-adjusted on day two and picked up 80 points.
Seventh place went to Billy Wummer’s Spiced Rum III team of Billy, Don Lamb, Sherri and Wayne Beswick, Freddie Joseph, Howard Tuman, and Tony Joseph. They earned points in every event they fished this season. The Yamaha pow-ered Contender team earned 790 points.
Our Texas team, Papotanic,
with Jose Reyes, Bill Platt, Ozzie Fischer, Marc Bledsoe, and Mark Nagelmueller earned 720 points good for eighth place.
Before we go any farther, let’s look at the overall points. Kwazar had a remarkable season winning with 1,180 points. They really ran away with it! But second had 900, third was 880, fourth 825, fifth 810, sixth 800, seventh 790, then it goes down to 720 for eighth. Sound fair? A close race? You bet! So before we go any farther let’s make it perfectly clear. Bracewell, Wiggins, and Henderson deserve a lot of credit for fine tuning the Tour. The scores speak for them-selves. ■

Beginning in February, SKA and Garmin will co-host a year-long promotion. Each
month we will accept your best video from your fishing experi-ences. You shoot; we judge. The winner receives the new Garmin HD Action Camera.
All videos we receive will be posted online for everyone to see, enjoy, and comment on. It makes no difference whether it’s produced from your tournament experiences or from just fun fish-ing for other species. Remember that your experience on the water helps promote your sponsors also.
Garmin and SKA also under-stand that shooting video isn’t just a point and shoot experi-ence. It takes some thought, good camera angles, and the emotions teams experience with a big fish at the end of their line. What about catching bait or getting the boat prepared before head-ing out? The thrill of seeing a big fish hoisted on the scale and then receiving your awards. Think, think, think! The opportunities are endless. It’s also another way
to promote your sponsors or pos-sibly get sponsors.
Don’t have cameras on your boat? Now’s the time to change that! It’s not really that expen-sive, and look at the experiences you’ll capture and have for years to come plus you could win the monthly contest. Going to Key West? Perfect way to get started!
Why is Garmin doing this pro-motion? It’s obvious; they have a new state-of-the-art camera designed for this environment. They’re really affordable too and are truly easy to use.

You may be wondering why nobody thought of this before. Why not have two transducers running at once on a
split-screen display? Well, the problem was that one transducer would pick up the signal from the other transducer and show very confused displays.
It was worse yet if the two transducer frequencies were har-monics. An example of harmonics would be that the 50kHz for deep sounding divides into the most common 200kHz frequency for shallow work evenly at four times.
The breakthrough this year is that the new CHIRP sounders won’t be bothered by another transducer on a single frequency. You can even have CHIRP work-ing on two frequency ranges at once for a detailed look at bait and kingfish, for example. Dual channels also make more sense now with wide-angle transducers or side scan, for instance, that actually gives you quite a differ-ent look under and around your boat than a plain downward-focused sounder.
You have a better chance of finding fish getting out of the
current on the ledge side of a reef, as an example. The sidescan or wide-angle transducer shows you the reef even if you’re not right over it, and the narrow-cone CHIRP fishfinder shows the fish clearly when you move the boat over to take a look. On the other hand, remember that CHIRP usu-ally works better at higher boat speeds while you’re on the way to a hot spot.
Either way, this idea of a split-screen dual channel fishfinder help you find things.
Obviously, the price goes up a bit to have two channels and two
transducers, but it’s not double. You only need one display screen and one (dual channel) black box. Also, the prices of some transducers are taking a big drop this season. Raymarine has just started making two-in-one trans-ducers just for dual channel fish-finding.
For now, the tough part of these dual combinations of transducers is that you don’t have total choice of any types. There are a few complex reasons, and no single manufacturer makes every type of sounder either. See the sidebar for general types.

If we toss out the sounders for shallow lakes and the huge trans-ducers for commercial work, we find that Raymarine and Garmin offer dual combinations that are great for SKA boats. Essentially, you want a split-screen combina-tion of a wide angle look around your boat and with the other side of your display showing the best possible detail of whatever you are concentrating on.
I’ll list some specifics of the available combinations at the end of this article, and you should watch the manufactur-ers’ websites for details and new developments.
These ideas are develop-ing quickly, especially for the relatively small business of elec-tronics for boats. Only a couple years ago, CHIRP sounders were introduced. Although they raised the price bar for fishfinders, the benefits were worth it. Extremely clear and separated images, bot-tom ID, deeper function for the power output (and cost) are all
possible because of the range of frequency and the digital process-ing that are part of CHIRP. Don’t forget the elimination of interfer-ence, bubbles and turbulence that has only become standard in fishfinders in the last several years, too.
As mentioned above, a dual-channel fishfinder is a natural extension of this rapid develop-ment. It’s not like when stereo sound came out, because each channel is processing quite dif-ferent data streams. Think of the technology as being a bit more like picture-in-picture on your television, where each chan-nel has different content. This complex fish finding system is so good that all the major manu-facturers are offering it within several months of each other.
In dual channels, each manu-facturer couples CHIRP with what they think is the best way of looking around your boat. If you want two sounders other than what is offered now, you
may consider two separate screens, even using two differ-ent brands.
RAYMARINERaymarine still offers their conventional CP300 black box sounder. It is compatible with all Raymarine multi-function dis-plays and uses conventional 50 and 200 kHz transducers. One frequency is used at a time.
At the top end of Raymarine’s new black box fishfinders, the CP450 uses Airmar transduc-ers for dual-channel CHIRP imaging. You can expect detail down to 10,000 feet and you can adjust both channels separately for CHIRP frequencies in high, medium and low swept ranges. You can split the screen, and use any recent MFD, which you may already have on your boat.
CHIRP in one frequency may show one type of fish and anoth-er type of fish will be targeted more clearly in another frequency range.
The unique offering from Raymarine is in the CP100 series. At the least expensive end of new dual-channel CHIRP fishfinders, you can have the CP100 electron-ics built into an a68 or a78. The a78 has a 7-inch screen. With either the a’s or by coupling a CP100 to any MFD, you can use Raymarine’s new proprietary CHIRP transducers.
These new two-channel trans-ducers have CHIRP Downvision and CHIRP sonar elements, which can be used at the same time for a split-screen look at a wide angle, and in a detailed look at whatever is directly under your boat.
Although the cost of these transducers in a transom style are only a fraction of competitive pieces, they have the limitation of only working down to about 600 feet of depth.
GARMINFor now, Garmin has the GCV10, which is a black box sounder that can send images to a display from their two SideVu and DownVu CHIRP transducers. Maximum depth specification is 500 feet for the SideVu and 750 feet for the DownVu. The Echo and GPSMap combination units are the com-patible displays for the GCV10. Compatibility and possible soft-ware upgrades are complex, so check with Garmin if you’re look-ing at this system. Watch for new product announcements around the time of Miami Boat Show in mid-February.
SIMRADThe SonarHub from Simrad is a dual channel black box. You can have a split screen display from a CHIRP sounder and their StructureScan HD. StructureScan is amazing 3D, but for now you can only get a transducer that fits on a trolling motor. Obviously, this is made for shallow, calm water, but watch for future development if they can make it work in deep water and waves. ■
John Minetola applies his knowledge of electrical and electronic engineering com-bined with 35 years of expe-rience in the marine industry to write articles for Angler magazine January–June revealing the latest, innova-tive products available to sport fishermen.
The types of transducers out there include:
• High frequency shallow water
• Fairly high frequency narrow angle
• Low frequency, wide angle for deep water search
• CHIRP transducers with a sweep of many frequencies
• Dual-channel with CHIRP and other elements
• Forward looking for cruising boats
• Fixed, multiple-element transducers to look around
• Scanning sonar with a steerable transducer
Most of these are further multiplied by choices of transom-mount, through hull protruding and through hull flush mount, plus glue-inside hull. Add-ons include temperature, boat speed, and multiple-element depth with dual-frequency in one transducer case
The types of displays include:• Downward column of everything
below the boat
• 3-D images of a wide area below the boat, moving with the boat, as though you were looking down from high above
• Hemispherical image of all around for very deep water
• Simple numerical display of depth without a graphical image
• Obviously some transducers are made for a certain display, like a steerable transducer gives the hemispherical image on your display.
