Animal Growth and AdaptationsWhat is your favorite animal? What helps that animal survive?More than likely what you thought of is an adaptation.
Ostriches Seahorse• Largest birds in the
world• Strong legs• Help them run
40mi/hr (64km/hr)• Can also kick other
animals with them if threatened
• Female seahorse lays eggs in the male’s pouch.• The male then carries
them until the eggs hatch
Vocabulary Preview• Environment• Climate• Oxygen• Shelter• Metamorphosis• Adaptation • Camouflage• Mimicry• Migration• hibernation
Targets and VocabularyNeed to know
• We need to know1. Five basic needs all animals have……………….2. How some animals meet each of these needs………….3. Should be able to define the following
1. Environment2. Climate3. Oxygen4. Shelter5. Metamorphosis6. Adaptation 7. Camouflage8. Mimicry9. Migration10. hibernation
How animals meet their needs• Environment • Everything that
surrounds and affects the animal.
• Both living and non-living
• Climate• Average temperature
and rainfall of an area over many years
• Animals have adapted to be able to live in any climate in the world`
• Oxygen• A gas in the air that helps
animals and humans live and breathe
• Whales and dolphins come to the waters surface to breathe air into their lungs
• Most fish however breathe oxygen in through their gills
• As water moves over the gills, the oxygen then passes through the fish’s blood
Needs of animals• Food• Water• Shelter• A place where the
animal is protected from other animals and their climate• Rocks, logs, leaves, dig
a hole
• Air (oxygen)
Quick Review• Animals have some basic needs in common.• Oxygen, food, water, and shelter
• Animals of a species must reproduce in order for their species to survive.
• Each type of animal meets its needs in its own way.
Adaptations• A bird’s beak• Different sizes and shapes• To eat seeds, fruit, or even insects, some birds eat fish• Bird’s beaks have adapted to what they eat over time
• Adaptation- a body part or behavior that helps an animal meet its needs in its environment
• Seed eaters have thick, heavy beaks
• Fruit eaters have thick and heavy beaks
• Insect eaters sharp and pointed beaks
Bird Adaptations• Feathers• Keep birds warm, dry, and help them fly• Feathers are very light, and give the bird’s body a smooth surface
• Hollow Bones• Filled with air pockets (hollow) • Make birds light to help them fly• Not all birds can fly however so…..
• Other Bird adaptations.• Ostrich long legs help it run really fast. How fast?• Penguins
• Have adaptations for moving in water
Body coverings• Fur or hair• Helps mammals keep warm• Sharp hair for some for protection
• Any guesses on what animals?• Whiskers that function as sensory organs
• Scales• Can you name some animals with scales?• Scales can help protect them from disease• Protect it from drying out or injury• Scales on a snake are overlapping; helps the snake move
Color and Shape
• Snowshoe hare• White in the winter; brown in the summer. WHY????
• This is an example of camouflage• Color or pattern that helps the animal blend in with its
surroundings; helps it hide • Examples: tiger’s fur is striped; blends in with light and dark
shadows of tall grass• Toads: bumpy brownish skin, makes it look like pebbles on the
forest floor• Chameleon’s color changes to match its bacground
Mimicry• Mimicry is an adaptation in which an animal looks very much
like another animal
Cool VideoAdaptationsCamouflage
&Mimicry
Behaviors for survival• Instincts • A behavior that an
animal begins life with; adaptations that help animals meet their needs
• Migration• Movement of a group of
one type of animal from one region to another, and back again.
• Hibernation• Period of time when
an animal goes into a deep sleep
• They eat extra food and find great shelter in order to do this
• During hibernation breathing rate and heartbeat rate fall
Check out these Adaptations• Rain Forest animals• Explore different animals• Quiz yourself• Penguin facts• GAME!!!!• 1-14 on the page are adaptation links• How animals meet their needs• Cool games (choose wisely)
