Introduc)on

MurasuAnjalisasuiteofsoftwaretoolsthathelpcreate,edit,convertandpublishTamilcontentonWindowsandMacOSXoperatingenvironments.

Muthu Nedumaran -irst developed the software in 1985, on a personal computerrunningMSDOS3.1operating systemasahobby. Theearlyversionsof the softwarehad both software and hardware components. The graphics card hardware wasmodi%iedtorenderTamilcharactersalongwithRomanletters.

Featuresof thesoftwarewereregularlyupdatedyearafteryear.MurasuAnjal5.0, the!irstversion to runonMicrosoftWindowsoperatingenvironment (Windows3.0)wasreleased in 1991. Mac OS X version of Murasu Anjal was included as part of theoperatingsysteminTiger(10.4).

MurasuAnjalchangedtheTamilpublishinglandscapeintheregionfromthedayitwas!irst introduced. Daily, weekly and monthly publications and printed books wereproducedwithMurasuAnjal.

Version 9 of the software, which was introduced in late 1999 included support forUnicode. It iswidelybelieved thatMurasuAnjalwas the 9irstTamil input software tosupportUnicodeatthattime.Muchofthetechnicaldesignofthesoftwareremainedthesamefromversions5.0till9.7.ModernoperatingsystemssuchasWindows7andMacOSXprovidemuchbettersupportforIndianlanguages.Assuchtheolddesignrequiredareview.

MurasuAnjal 10, introduces a completely redesigned set of components. Each of thecomponents takes advantage of the operating system services to bring out the bestutilitiesforTamilwhilestayingconformanttothestandardsforbetterco‐existencewithotherlanguages,speci1icallyChinese.

This release includes companion tools that will help users create Tamil content withimprovedeaseofuseandcompatibilitywithallthecommonsoftware,speci(icallyOf(iceandWebapplications.

A highly sophisticated inputmethod editor, look‐upword dictionary, visual keyboardarejusttonameafew.LegacydocumentscomposedwitholderencodingformatslikeTSCII, TAB, TAM and Murasu‐6 can be converted to Unicode with Anjal's embeddedconversion tools. High quality Tamil Unicode fonts, some with regular and boldvariantsareincludedforbetterpresentation

The“Nigandu”featureintroducedinAnjal9.5hasbeenredesignedinthenewversion.ItnowincludesacompleteTamil‐EnglishdictionaryfromLifco.

Unlike previous versions of Murasu Anjal that provided keyboard drivers, Murasu Anjal 10providesInputMethodsbasedonTextServicesFramework.ThisensurescompatibilitywithallUnicodesupportedapplicationsandfutureversionsofWindowsandMacOSX.

VisualKeyboardandCharacterPalette

To assist new users who want to learn the Tamil99 keyboard layout, the Tamil99 Visualkeyboard isprovided so thatusers can click through thekeys to input textoruse it as anon‐screenreferencewhile typingon thephysicalkeyboard. TheCharacterPaletteallowsusers toselectTamilsymbolsandnumeralsthatarenotmappedtothekeyboardlayout.

LookupWordwithLifcoTamilEnglishDictionary

ThecompleteTamil‐EnglishDictionaryisbundledintoAnjal.Thiswillallowuserstolookupthewordsandchecktheirmeanings,astheyarecomposed.

AnjalUnicodeFonts

Fifteen professionally designed Tamil Unicode fonts are included. Some of them are providedwithregularandboldvariantsforbettercontrastbetweenbodytextandheadings.Inaddition,AnjalInaiMathiSchoolbookfontisspeci3icallyadaptedtocomplywiththewrittenformofTamilalphabetsasapprovedbyMOE.

Old documents created in legacy encoding such as TSCII, TAB or TAM can be converted toUnicodewith the converter embedded intoOf2iceapplications.For the 2irst time,userswill beable to convert even PowerPoint and Excel documents. This add‐in is available only in theMicrosoftWindowsversion.

FileConverterforHTMLandTextDocuments

Legacy documents in TXT or HTML 5iles can be converted using the 5ile converter. Users justdrag‐and‐dropthese*ilesandtheconvertercreatesUnicodeversionsofthe*iles.Many*ilescanbeselectedanddroppedintotheconverterforabatchconversion.

Pre‐requisitesBefore installingAnjal into your computer, please ensure that you have the followingminimumrequirements:

1. AnactiveInternetConnectiona. Internet connection is required at the time of installation. This is to

verifyyourAnjal10serialnumber.

2. AdobeReaderoranyPDFreadera. This is required to read the help document and other PDF documents

thatyoumaycreatefromtimetotime.Ifyouareabletoreadthishelpdocument, thenyourcomputeralreadyhasareaderinstalled.

3. MicrosoftWindowsXpwithDotNetFramework2.0a. IfyourcomputerisrunningWindowsVistaorlater,therequiredDotNet

frameworkisalreadyincluded.b. ForWindowsXp, you may install the framework from the distribution

CD‐ROM.The link to install thiscanbe found in themainscreenof theinstallationCD‐ROM.

4. ComplexScriptSupportenabled&TextServicesturnedon(WindowsXponly)

InstallingMurasuAnjalStart theMurasuAnjal installer eitherbydouble clicking thedownloaded "ileor fromtheappropriatelinkontheCD‐ROMmainscreen.

Followthestepsasoutlinedbelowtocompletetheinstallation:

IMPORTANT:Itisimportanttoenteryourfullnameandemailaddressintherespectivecolumns.Inaddition,MurasuAnjalrequiresaSerialNumberforactivation.Dependingon your type of purchase, this number can be found either in your purchase receiptemailorpastedontheCD‐ROMcover.MakesureyouentertheSerialNumberexactlyasprovided.

Click theNext button to accept the default values. It is highly recommended that youkeeptheinstallationFolderasprovided.

Click Finish once the installation is complete. Thiswill close the installer. There is nofurther con+iguration or setup to do onMurasu Anjal, except to install the Anjal PDFwriter.We’lldothatnext.


InstallingAnjalPDFWriterIfyouareinstallingfromtheCD‐ROM,clickonthelinkinthemainscreen.

The installation of Anjal PDF writer is very simple. Click OK when prompted forDestinationFoldertoacceptthedefault.

TheLanguageBarThe installerwouldhaveaddedAnjal inputmethods to the languagebar inWindows.Youcaninvoketheinputmethodinthefollowingways:

Anjalalso includesan “Options”menu inwhichyoucanchooseyourkeyboard layout,starttheVisualKeyboard,theCharacterPaletteorswitchinputmodes.


Selec%ngtheInputMethodMurasu Anjal includes8 inputmethods. They are listed in the Optionsmenu shownbelow. Thedefault inputmethodwillbeAnjal.Youcanchange that toyourpreferredonebysimplyselectingitfromthemenu.Theactiveinputmethodwillhaveatickmarkontheitem.

SwitchingInputModes[English<‐>Tamil]WhileMurasuAnjalremapsthekeyboardforTamiltextinput,italsoallowsusersyoutochangetheinput‐modetoEnglish.Inotherwords,withMurasuAnjal,youcaninputinTamilandEnglishwhileremaininginTamilmode.

Todo this, use theF12key.Users of earlier versionsofMurasuAnjalwill be familiarwiththis.

Note thatF12allowsyou to change “inputmode”betweenTamiland Englishwithoutchangingthe“inputlanguage”.

MurasuAnjalFonts

Murasu Anjal 10 includes25 Tamil typefaces that are completely Unicode compliant.These typefacesareavailableonbothWindowsandMacOSXplatforms.Thisenablesuserstoeasilytaketheirdocumentsandworkacrossboththeseplatforms.

Two of the typefaces include regular and bold variants. This feature allows a singletypefacewithtwodifferentweightsforconsistenttypestylesindocuments.

The table below lists some font faces that are available in Anjal 10 and theirrecommended usage. This is just a sample set of fonts. There are more fonts in thepackagethatwhatisshowninthesamplesbelow.

SchoolbookFont:RecommendedfontforteachingandlearningAnjalInaiMathihasavariantthatisspeci-icallydesignedforprimaryschooltextusage.The glyphs in this font, called Anjal InaiMathi Schoolbook, are designed to meet thestandardforlettershapessetbytheMinistryofEducation.

BodyTextFontsThescreencapturebelowshowsfontsthatarespeci2icallydesignedforbodytext.Twoof these,Anjal InaiMathiandAnjalChittuSlant,areavailable in two faces:regularandbold.Theemboldeningofthestemwidthsofthesefontsindesign,maketheboldfacesstand out from their regular counterparts. The effect will be much better than thedefaultemboldeningdonebyWindows.

HeadingFontsThe screen capture below shows some heading fonts that can be used in formal andinformal documents. The font Anjal Thoegai has another variant called Anjal ThoegaiCollege(notshowninthecapture).

Before the adoption of Unicode, particularly its general availability in computeroperating systems, users have been creating documents in many different encodingformats,suchasTSCII,TAB,TAM,Murasu‐6andothers.

These documents may not be usable in modern and future operating systems, asUnicodeisbecomingthestandardforallwritingsystemsoftheworld.

MurasuAnjal10,however,isawareoftheformatsofmostoftheseolddocumentsandincludesfeaturesthatconvertthemintoUnicode.

TherearetwoconvertersinMurasuAnjal10.

1. AnjalConverter:ThisisanembeddedconverterthatisinstalledasanAddIntoMicrosoftOf+ice.

2. FileConverter:ThisconvertsTXTandHTML*iles.Fileconverterwillbecoveredinthenextsection.

AnjalConverterToconvertaolddocumentinMSWord,PowerPointorExcel isverysimple. Openthedocumentandclickthe“AnjalConverter”buttonthatisinstallinthetoolbar.

The text appears gibberish because the original font used in this document is notavailableinthesystem.Inaddition,nootherUnicodefontwillhelprenderthetext,asitisnotinUnicode.

ToconverttheentiredocumenttoUnicode,youjustneedtoclickthe“AnjalConverter”buttononce.ThebuttonisplacedinWord’stoolbar(highlightedinthepictureabove).

Anjalconverterwillthenconvertthedocument,scanningeverycharacterinit.Forthisreason,convertingWorddocumentsmaytakealongertimecomparedtoPowerPointorsimpleExcelWorkbooksbecauseofthevolumeofcharactersinthedocument.

Oncetheconversionisdone,AnjalConverterwill

1. Savetheconverteddocumentasanew0ile.2. Thenew'ilenamewillbebasedontheoriginal'ilename,with“Uni”pre‐pended

to it. For example, if your original 1ile name is SAMPLE.DOC, the new 1ile inUnicodewillbenamedasUNISAMPLE.DOC.

3. Theoriginaldocumentwillbeleftasitiswithnochangesmadeatall.

Ifthereisalreadya.ilecalledSAMPLE.DOC(perhapsbecauseofapreviousconversion),thenew 'ilewill thenbecalledUNISAMPLE1.DOC. Thenumberwillbe incrementedeverytimeconversionisdoneonthesamedocument.

Notethatthedialogincludesthenew!ilenameinthemessage.

TheconverteddocumentwillbeinUnicodeandthefontwillbesettoAnjalInaiMathibydefault. The typeface variations such as bold, italics, underline and even Word ArtgraphicswillremainastheyarewiththetextreplacedinUnicode.

Legacy Tamil text, i.e. text in old encoding formats, is also widely used in HTMLdocuments and scripts that are saved as plain text +iles. These +iles do not carryextensiveformattinginformationthatWord,PowerPointorOf6icedocumentscarry.

Both theAnjal Converter and FileConverter included inAnjal is to help you convertlegacydocumentstoUnicode.

It is not designed to be a permanent tool that allows documents to be created in oldformats.

Technology changes and newer standards in document formatting may introducefeaturesthattheconvertersmaynotunderstand.

Forthisreason,itisbestforyoutoconvertallyourolddocumentstoUnicodeasquicklyaspossibleanddiscontinueusingoldformats. CreateallyournewdocumentsdirectlyinUnicodetostaywithchangingtimes.

Important note:The converter can only convert fromwhat is available in the originaldocument. It will not /ix errors. In areas where it cannot convert a region of text,particularly inPowerPointdocuments, theconverterwill includeanote in the slidewithsuggestionsonhowthetextcangetconvertedmanually.
